Half and half. The Romulans had been abducting Vulcans for intel (see also what North Korea has done with Japanese and South Koreans, as well as the two-part TNG ep where Worf finds out that his father might be alive in a secret Rom prison camp); Spock was part of the Starfleet operation that found and rescued them, one half-breed girl in particular. Most Vulcans, of course, wanted no part of a child of such shame - while denying, of course, that emotion played any part in that decision. Spock became her guardian and mentor.

And yeah, she looked damn good in the red and blacks. :)

the other actress was nowhere near as intense around the eyes as Kirstie Alley was. why did they recast anyway? did the Scientologists get to Kirstie Alley by then and make her stop being in movies that have aliens that aren't Xenu?

What I heard at the time was that Kirstie wanted more money than they were wiling to pay her, but I've not confirmed that.

Yeah, I mean, I heard it from my brother who said it in this "Gosh, women, wanting to be paid and shit" tone of voice, so I've taken it with a grain of salt, but who knows.
