Ginny: Like black people, in a way
This wank was picked up from the sailor [info]lerefuge on the good ship [info]the_hms_stfu.

Are you all sick of Slutgate yet? I know I'm not. [info]darynthe wrote a rebuttal to all the Ginny defenses, including a psychological profile of the ferbile imagination of Ginny fans.

Highlights:

I’ve seen many comments where Ginny lovers (I saw How to kill a Mockingbird yesterday so saying Ginny-lovers is a very funny pun) have tried to explain away the horrible “crime” of disliking the aforementioned character.

Even if for a few of you, Ginny Weasley, a secondary character in a children series, is a representative of the most important human values in your systems; it doesn’t follow that the rest of the readers will give such an importance to said character. Was it because she is commonplace? Because she is like just any average person? No pretty, no smart (no Hermione for sure!), not rich, nor popular?

So, we come down to the point of the identification /projection issue. This people who didn’t identify with the “instant millionaire fantasy” may have found themselves not invested emotionally in any character, and even in some cases they were feeling more identified with Hermione.

Unfortunately literary and media stereotypes do exist. Cataloguing a character as belonging to a certain stereotype is something rather normal to do in the frame of in-depth analysis.

Bonus features in the comments:

[info]analectic: My theory is that Ginny is the Boba Fett of the HP world. Because pre-OotP, there were only a few tantalising tidbits about her so Ginny could be whatever you wanted her to be. Suddenly in the last two books she gets all this exposure and the preconceptions get fused with all the new info, rather than sparking a new analysis of the character.

[info]darynthe, in a response to a comment: Wow, that explanation you heard that it is Ok to bash real people but fictional characters are off limits is mind boogling. But then again I suppose you can stretch words and logic to fit almost anything you want to. This is why I often think that problems shouldn’t be solved by mere logic, they should be addressed first and foremost by principle, especially the Golden Rule.

ETA: [info]darynthe shows up, and the irony thickens.

I made that pun and attacked my own essay because I don't take myself too seriously, as you seem to do. I put myself in the bad guys place for the lenght of a sentence enclosed in a parethesis. So what?

Apparently, the internet is no longer serious business once you make an ass of yourself.

ETA the Second: [info]darynthe continues to not get it:

This is very ironic from people who makes icons about harmonians mocking them as they were african slaves opressed in North America

Look, we would love to keep the analogies to race issues out of it, but you guys keep bringing it up.

"But then again I suppose you can stretch words and logic to fit almost anything you want to."

Sometimes - sometimes - the irony is so beautiful that I have to cross my legs tightly just to keep from peeing in excitement.

"This is why I often think that problems shouldn’t be solved by mere logic"

Ah, "mere" logic. It's the ingredient that needn't be included. Like the pesky "meat" in "meatloaf".

Ginny is supposed to be average. And I like her for that. Why do they think that just because Harry falls for her, she's now imbedded with super sue powers which JKR never gave her, even in HBP?

Like I've said, that pun=/= not funny. At all. They really missed the entire point of the book/movie if they equate those two together.

I love the "I just watched To Kill a Mockingbird" comment. Like, are we supposed to applaude her for taking time out of her busy Ginny-hating schedule to watch it? Are we supposed to fall at her feet shouting "OMG SHE IS SO CULTURED" and just eat up her dumbassery?

Why do I imagine her watching TKaM and griping that it should be color, because B&W is boring, and who is this Gregory Peck? It should totally have starred Chad Michael Murray, because he is SO DEEP on One Tree Hill!

From the 'essay':

- Harmonians hate her because she gets the hero.
- No, they hate her because she is pretty and popular, and they seem to have such complexes with pretty people that they hate anyone pretty.
- They are no popular either, so they also dislike a lot popular people.
- They hate her because they were wrong in their predictions
- No, they hate her because they want Harry with Hermione or Luna and Ginny is in the way.
- No, they think she is a bitch, a slut, a meanie, egotistical, etc because that is the way they project themselves in others, their world is filled with fearful people like that, while we see her as pretty, kind, warm, compassionate, adorable because we also pretty, kind, warm, compassionate, adorable too! Wheee!! So that is how we see her! Ginny is the mirror all truths reflect into!! I am sorry for Harmonians, but yet I still hate them for hating Ginny!
- They are misogynists (miso-gynists, got it?)
[frankly, no - sproutling] and they hate women. All women. Ginny is the new Eve whence every curse is distributed multiplied by a thousand, to any woman proud of being so.

All of these things are not 'reasons given' by 'Ginny-lovers' to explain why people don't like the character. They are conclusions that tossers like darynthe jumped to and several Harmonians waved their puny fists in the air and went "yeah!" (ergo it is akin to a fanon construct, not a recognisable and indisputable fact).

darynthe is essentially arguing against their own preconceptions, which is kind of cute in a way.

OK, right off the bat comparing "Ginny-lovers" to the racist epithets thrown around in To Kill A Mockingbird is NOT "funny". Its sick.

Next, this - But then again I suppose you can stretch words and logic to fit almost anything you want to. - is so ironic that I will never suffer from anemia in my life.

Lastly, when - WHEN - are these intellectual midgets going to understand that this issue doesn't have a damn thing to do with shipping, Harry Potter, or fiction in general? Its about basic human respect, which apparently these nitwits have never extended to another human being in their short, unfulfilled lives.

So ... wait. The reason you see a character the way you do depends entirely on your own personality?

So if I liked, say, Riza Hawkeye for being a stoic, intellegent, devoted, ass-kicking military woman ... it's because I'M all those things? Because that's news to me. I have the ass-kicking power of a small toy poodle.

How much do you wanna bet that this little zit-analyser thinks she's edgy for dropping the n-bomb?

I saw How to kill a Mockingbird yesterday...

Yes, but have you READ it? Actually, I hope not, because I'd hate to see crazy shippers get a hold of this book...

But, but....

Aside from the sheer offensive emotional blindness of making that kind of flip comment about racial insults, the lovers weren't the ones who "got it wrong". They were the moral heroes of the tale. (Is trying not to be too spoilery, since some people now want to read TKaM!)

Goddamn it! I thought the Harmonians were slaves! Now Ginny-lovers (which, by their definitions, includes anybody who says anything positive about her...EVER) are the oppressed blacks? I need a flowchart to follow the Harmonian evolution. And possibly a pie graph.

And, as constantly stated, the 'pun' of Ginny lovers and Nigger lovers is NOT funny (ps. puns are generally supposed to be funny and/or clever). It's an insult to humanity in general. What's more, you've got it WRONG. The 'nigger lovers' were the GOOD GUYS and the ones who were 'right' all along.

...

Hey! I sense a very telling psychological slip in all of this. My mind, it boogles in sheer happiness at this thought.

...dude, DO NOT TOUCH To Kill a Mockingbird. I read this book at the ripe age of seven and it still is one of my absolute favorites. It's a friggin' AWESOME story about AWESOME guys who defended people from racism and such shit. In other words, TKaM deals with... you know, Truly Serious Business (as opposed to your fandom issues AKA Serious Internet Business).

Vance: Ginny didn't work for anything, yet got it all. That's an attractive philosophy--get it all for free. They say that Ginny deserves Harry--why? What has SHE done to deserve anyone, really? Let alone Harry.
...?
*breathes*
1. Ginny's actually pretty scrappy; didn't she used to steal the boys' brooms and practice flying by herself because she didn't have a broom? Hell, she got into the Slug Club because of her hexing ability; Slughorn's a blowhard, but he *is* a pretty good judge of talent and merit.
2. What's with this deserving crap? Since when did romantic relationships -- sorry, *adolescent* romantic relationships -- have *anything* to do with "deserving"?
2a. And who's the arbiter of deserving?
2b. I mean, HP *is* a moral universe, but the morality focuses on things like, oh, genocide, prejudice, AND EVIL.

Ooops. Somebody get me a box of Kleenex?

Hmm. So, if that's what she thinks of when she thinks of Ginny-lovers, then she thinks of Vance, herself, and their lovely crew of martyrs for sexism as an angry, hate-filled lynch mob?

Surprisingly self-aware, this darynthe.

Ok, so we all know that none of them have actually read Emma, and we're pretty sure that they haven't actually read HP. (At least not read in the conventional sense of the word.) Now we know that [info]darnythe hasn't even looked at the cover of TKaM. S/h/it thinks it's a guide for killing birds.

So, Someone points out the "n---- lovers" were right, and darynthe says she knows that... which means she's admitting she's like the ignorant racists? Or... er... I don't get it. The lack of logic, it hurts.
