A Portkey battle between wanking and being realistic
Ah, Portkey! Home of the 'Pumpkin Pie' variety of batshit H/Hr fans. They like to start wanking in advance. I mean! They like to bolster themselves as regards the shipping in Harry Potter.
Today's effort? Styr would like us to play the numbers game!
Remember! It's highly incomplete and quite clearly inadequate!
Basically, what our OP is doing is counting how many characters 'saw' H/Hr vs how many 'saw' R/Hr.
For H/Hr the list starts with Cho (she can see that Harry obviously cares a lot about darling Hermione), Viktor (Considered Harry a rival [for Hermione]) and Mrs. Weasley (she obviously was around those two enough to pick up something).
The R/Hr list consists of: Harry. Who is "a very poor judge of relationships and non-platonic (romantic) love in general."
Other fans quickly jump in with McGonagall (seeking Harry after Hermione was petrified in Chamber), Rita Skeeter (tongue-sticking out smiley gif), most of Hogwarts, and Colin Creevy.
C'mon! Who's not convinced by that? What more do we need, honestly?
Apparently, for sanity to get wanked on!
xCarpeDiem adds Ginny to the list (it's quite clear in HBP that she at least considers Hermione as a rival for Harry's attentions) but gasp!-shock!-horror! Adds Lavender for the R/Hr list—"seems Lavender also see's something there". xCD quickly rectifies this with "but then again she just seemed jealous all-around".
Our OP, Styr comes along to remind her that fairness is not about being equal! "Wrong place, wrong time for Ron and Hermione in regards to Lavender."
Which, I might add, is where the real fun starts!
Because Stan (who has been noted for sanity before) has this to say: I do not think that there is any point of excluding it, because some people may say the same about Cho or Krum. IMHO, the best thing going for Harry and Hermione is not bland numbers, but respect and friendship known only to them.
Well done, Stan!
In fact, Stan gets a little support at first—with people chiming in that yes, love, trust, faith and public consensus is a good mix and that yes, it would be unfair to cut Lav from the list.
Meanwhile, Ron gets added to the H/Hr list.
But Styr will not be denied! " She only spotted the possibility after the two had been seen by herself coming out of compromising situations (hospitatal scene, FF/sluggish memory scene). I think any female in her position with any intelligence at all could have saw something going 'on'. Lavender certainly had no problem with R/Hr being friends until she started getting in the way, so to speak."
Wait…what? Styr is probably a little inebriate on the 'lucky juice' that he/she beings to jabber on before concluding that: "It is quite ironic when Hermione takes the FF and ends up hugging Harry instead of pining/or more over Ron, as would be expected of a lucky Hermione (or even more) finally catching her man. Even though she finally hugs/has Harry, she doesn't talk it so far as to cause drama - Hermione knows her limits."
Well, it's good that somebody does!
In fact, several posters disagree with the idea that Lavender "had no problem" before—and then they disagree with the numbers game itself finding it to be 'dangerous' and 'unreliable'.
Meanwhile, the others ignore the debate and keep on building the list. Adding Dumbledore in OotP (Hermione had obviously also been told about Harry's current mood and situation and was sent for Harry. Dumbledore saw that Hemione was important enough to get through to Harry and help him with what he was going through) and Draco Malfoy (very observeant fellow and he knew how to spot out weaknesses or sore points in people-- The quote was directed at Harry , and Malfoy compared him to being second best to Ron , whom we all know that Hermione has a very low opinion about. To say that Harry is second best to the likes of Ron seems to touch a nerve in her).
xCarpeDiem, DownWithGinny (who I find has potential to be a sock) and AdamantEve continue to find problems with the list. They believe that serious intent matters, and could there please be some canon evidence for Hermione 'having a low opinion' of Ron?
Damn it, Styr says you don't need canon or sanity! He/She/It informs us that "it shows how little Ron adds up to Hermione: In OotP, during the prefect badge scene - she is almost disheartened by Ron getting the badge, and is unable to articulate why he even got it in the first place" and " she flatly insults his bravado" and " I'm sure Hermione has at least mentally placed Harry on a higher pedestal than Ron." Most importantly: Ron and Hermione don't like each other [especially not in that way.]
Good to know!
So far, more sanity is winning out in the thread (and by 'more sanity' I mean shippers are going 'hey, wait, we might not be able to win even THIS numbers game!) but I have a feeling that Styr will be back.
