A Portkey battle between wanking and being realistic
Ah, Portkey! Home of the 'Pumpkin Pie' variety of batshit H/Hr fans. They like to start wanking in advance. I mean! They like to bolster themselves as regards the shipping in Harry Potter.

Today's effort? Styr would like us to play the numbers game!

Remember! It's highly incomplete and quite clearly inadequate!

Basically, what our OP is doing is counting how many characters 'saw' H/Hr vs how many 'saw' R/Hr.

For H/Hr the list starts with Cho (she can see that Harry obviously cares a lot about darling Hermione), Viktor (Considered Harry a rival [for Hermione]) and Mrs. Weasley (she obviously was around those two enough to pick up something).

The R/Hr list consists of: Harry. Who is "a very poor judge of relationships and non-platonic (romantic) love in general."

Other fans quickly jump in with McGonagall (seeking Harry after Hermione was petrified in Chamber), Rita Skeeter (tongue-sticking out smiley gif), most of Hogwarts, and Colin Creevy.

C'mon! Who's not convinced by that? What more do we need, honestly?

Apparently, for sanity to get wanked on!

xCarpeDiem adds Ginny to the list (it's quite clear in HBP that she at least considers Hermione as a rival for Harry's attentions) but gasp!-shock!-horror! Adds Lavender for the R/Hr list—"seems Lavender also see's something there". xCD quickly rectifies this with "but then again she just seemed jealous all-around".

Our OP, Styr comes along to remind her that fairness is not about being equal! "Wrong place, wrong time for Ron and Hermione in regards to Lavender."

Which, I might add, is where the real fun starts!

Because Stan (who has been noted for sanity before) has this to say: I do not think that there is any point of excluding it, because some people may say the same about Cho or Krum. IMHO, the best thing going for Harry and Hermione is not bland numbers, but respect and friendship known only to them.

Well done, Stan!

In fact, Stan gets a little support at first—with people chiming in that yes, love, trust, faith and public consensus is a good mix and that yes, it would be unfair to cut Lav from the list.

Meanwhile, Ron gets added to the H/Hr list.

But Styr will not be denied! " She only spotted the possibility after the two had been seen by herself coming out of compromising situations (hospitatal scene, FF/sluggish memory scene). I think any female in her position with any intelligence at all could have saw something going 'on'. Lavender certainly had no problem with R/Hr being friends until she started getting in the way, so to speak."

Wait…what? Styr is probably a little inebriate on the 'lucky juice' that he/she beings to jabber on before concluding that: "It is quite ironic when Hermione takes the FF and ends up hugging Harry instead of pining/or more over Ron, as would be expected of a lucky Hermione (or even more) finally catching her man. Even though she finally hugs/has Harry, she doesn't talk it so far as to cause drama - Hermione knows her limits."

Well, it's good that somebody does!

In fact, several posters disagree with the idea that Lavender "had no problem" before—and then they disagree with the numbers game itself finding it to be 'dangerous' and 'unreliable'.

Meanwhile, the others ignore the debate and keep on building the list. Adding Dumbledore in OotP (Hermione had obviously also been told about Harry's current mood and situation and was sent for Harry. Dumbledore saw that Hemione was important enough to get through to Harry and help him with what he was going through) and Draco Malfoy (very observeant fellow and he knew how to spot out weaknesses or sore points in people-- The quote was directed at Harry , and Malfoy compared him to being second best to Ron , whom we all know that Hermione has a very low opinion about. To say that Harry is second best to the likes of Ron seems to touch a nerve in her).

xCarpeDiem, DownWithGinny (who I find has potential to be a sock) and AdamantEve continue to find problems with the list. They believe that serious intent matters, and could there please be some canon evidence for Hermione 'having a low opinion' of Ron?

Damn it, Styr says you don't need canon or sanity! He/She/It informs us that "it shows how little Ron adds up to Hermione: In OotP, during the prefect badge scene - she is almost disheartened by Ron getting the badge, and is unable to articulate why he even got it in the first place" and " she flatly insults his bravado" and " I'm sure Hermione has at least mentally placed Harry on a higher pedestal than Ron." Most importantly: Ron and Hermione don't like each other [especially not in that way.]

Good to know!

So far, more sanity is winning out in the thread (and by 'more sanity' I mean shippers are going 'hey, wait, we might not be able to win even THIS numbers game!) but I have a feeling that Styr will be back.

Sigh. Harry has two best friends. TWO. All of the 'evidence' up there could apply to Ron as easily as to Hermione. So Harry/Ron is canon! Every character in the book can 'see' it!

Personally, I've always seen a character thinking something's going on between Harry and Hermione as indicating they don't really understand whichever one they're friends with. That's certainly the case for Cho, and I think Colin Creevay as well. Mrs. Weasley, meanwhile, can be excused, because she actually only sees them a couple of times per year at most, but I think it's telling of Viktor's relationship with Hermione that he makes that mistake.
But that's just me.

Muggles outnumber wizards. By this logic, Harry Potter is currently locked up in a mental institution having delusions, because magic clearly does not exist in the story.

You see, now that you linked to portkey I just had to have a look around. They have a thread where people can discuss what they think is going to happen at the end of the books...

If I'm going to hazard a guess. WARNING, not Harmony friendly:

Harry and Ginny won't end up together. He's said goodbye, and seeing as their parting of ways was so uninvolving, I think it would be silly to have him go back to her. If he's going to end up with someone, he'll end up with someone else, and if I'm going to take JKR's penchant for surprises into consideration, I think she'll pair Harry off with Luna. I want him to end up with Hermione, with all my heart, but since the IOS, that hope has withered away more and more.

Whatever, I found it involving enough and I wasn't really a shipper until post HBP. But fine.

Harry will likely become an Auror. I used to consider him being a Quidditch star, but I figured he's so sick of fame that Quidditch would naturally be out of the question.

I agree... I feel unclean

Let the games really begin...

I'd like to say Hermione's going to become a spinster if she doesn't end up with Harry. She's too independent and intelligent to settle for anyone less. She's leagues ahead of Ron. He would be such a downgrade. She's the sort who should end up with guys like Cedric, Viktor, Harry, or even Ernie McMillan. Not Ron. Ron's a f*cktard. BUT, I can almost see JKR writing her doom. JKR's going to make them end up together. Oh, the tragedy...

I am so not going to say anything because I will wank.

Hermione will not become a professor. That much JKR confirmed. She might try to get into the Ministry to affect change, and Percy will hate her. She'll only be worse if she were married to Ron. If she won't try her hand at politics, she might be a healer. Auror is fine, but I've never really thought she'd fit the profile.

??????

Ron will become a Ministry drone like his father. Not that I think Arthur's a loser, but he could've chosen a more lucrative job. He has seven sprogs, for God's sake. So Ron's going to follow in his father's footsteps and be an underachiever. He can't ever rise up in the Ministry, because he lacks the kiss-arse talents of Percy. Percy might try to help him along, just because Ron would be a constant embarrassment to him, but Ron will refuse Percy's help on principle.

I'm starting to sense that you don't like Ron?

I won't touch the rest, I left my mop at home and I prefer to be able to clean up after myself.

Remus might die, and Tonks will live a sad existence all her life, never making a perfect Patronus.

;_; I refuse to believe Lupin is going to die, but that aside that was a pretty unflattering comment to make about Tonks.

Percy will look to become the Ministry of Magic, just like all the other p*ssyfooting idiots before him.

Here's hoping that Percy has had enough of pussyfooting!

Ginny will become a Harpie. In Quidditch. What else did you think I meant? She'll end up with Dean, and they'll have twin kids.

Sure, quidditch, that's what you meant! Dean? OK!

Draco will escape prosecution but will watch his father get kissed. Draco will grow up to be powerful and despicable, like his dad, and he will wait the coming of the new Dark Lord. Pansy will be his wife.

Dude, I don't even like Draco and I'd give him more credit than that.

Lav Lav might end up with Seamus. But that's a guess that's purely without basis.

Hasn't stopped you from making other comments.

I am going now, because if your post didn't kill all my brain cells, then this just did.

D:

Are we talking about the bit at the end? Harry'd already drank some of it, then Hermione and Ginny split the rest. So they aren't getting that much luck, and the IMPORTANT part of them drinking the potion was to, uh, not get killed by DEs. It probably wore off by the time ... oh, never mind.

I see this as a Wank Super-volcano. It will build up slowly as book 7's release approaches giving plenty of warning for escape. (That we are all going to ignore.) Then when it gets here there will be the greatest explosion any fandom has ever known, a pyroclastic flow of wank will change fandom as we know it. Taking years to recover from the devastation. I can't wait.

Accio Harry!
Another example of Hermione's 'low' opinion of Ron is after the Grawp scene where we find out that Ron was the MVP of the match. Hermione was bewildered and unbelieving that he could do so well.

So, when Hermione was bewildered over Harry's success in Potions, she had a poor opinion of HIM, right?

Hopedreamer:
I've always figured it this way about Rita. Even if her intentions were less than honorable, she was still a journalist above all else. And as such, she had learned from long experience to notice things the rest of us usually don't -- even as Cho and Viktor, both Seekers, had (and him on Bulgaria's national Quidditch team, no less!). So isn't it possible that, in spite of herself, she actually did see something between Harry and Hermione?
Uh-ha. Seeker=knows all about relationship. Harry is a seeker. Harry said that Hermione is NOT his girlfriend, and thinks that Ron and Hermione are an item. Therefore...
And Rita=journalist=knows all there is to know. Who said that Hermione is a slut who dropped Harry like a hot coal. Therefore...

I’m glad someone else thinks so. She veers so wildly between sanity and utter madness. Strikes me as a sockpuppet who can’t decide whether she wants to make them look crazy or just debate.

As for Styr, s/he is the latest advocate of the "Hermione and Ron hate each other but pretend to be friends for Harry's sake" theory that always amuses us so much.

This made me lulz the hardest:
Most importantly: Ron and Hermione don't like each other [especially not in that way.]

Because it isn't at ALL a very classical writers device - no, not at all - to have the people ending up together hate each other at first. You never read of that in other books or see that in movies and if you do, well, JKR is different!!! Why? BECAUSE THE HARMONIANS SAY SO, DAMMIT!

And I beheld when she published the seventh book, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sack cloth, and the moon became as blood;

And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, could not fathom the end of the great series, and logged on to the internet and wanked;

For JKR said to the mountains and rocks, Fall.

And the Harmonians said unto JKR, she is a fraud; and the Herons quaked and called out to JKR in mercy of her greatness.

Lo, on the great Astral Plane, the Snapewives fell to their knees.

The great day of wank is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Prepare yourselves. The end is near.

This old argument inspired by 'poorly made in paint in about 3.2 seconds' icon.

I'm surprised that the giant 'better then you' brains over at Portkey seemed to miss the point about Jo making a tabloid journalist seeing the main boy and girl getting together. And being wrong.

But whatever.

Doesn't this violate Portkey's Terms of Service?

At first I thought that Deathly Hallows helpline in the UK was a stupid idea, but the more I think about it, the more I think some people really do need the help ...
