Graffiti = Harmony
So JKR wrote on a statue or something. Some fans are shocked and appalled at this criminal behavior, but the folks over at Portkey are seeing it as solid evidence of the truth of Harmony.

catwork is deeply moved by JKR's act: I have to say that this (Hermes bust) can not be accidental. When I read that article it gave me goose bumps and a definite saddened feeling for the author and her journey these last ten years as well. It is so poignant that she ended her story and what we believe influenced the author with how it began with well researched symbolism and alchemy.

Jeanas wonders: What would the Heron said about the Hermes bust ?, and October has some theories:

But I doubt the HeRon's will admit to anything than that 1. either it was the only bust in the room, or 2. that it was probably the nearest and most convenient bust on JKR's way out of the hotel suite for the final time.

Jeanas agrees that this is crazy talk: I was searching for a picture of the Hermes bust and was direct at the Leaky Cauldron !
ANd You know WHAT ???

The HERONS are confirming that this is a bust of Hermes but they interpreted it with PERCY. Percy owls is named HERMES. ..........go figure

redshoes spells it out for people who might still be wondering how the fuck this is all related to Harmony: So what could she be telling us besides that she has followed the alchemy framework through to the end?

A nod to Hermes Trismegistus, who started it all?
A hint that we should look at the "Hermes" in the story--who is not of course Percy's owl but our own Hermione?

Well, okay.

BONUS LOLZ: Not directly related to JKR's act of symbolic vandalism, but too good to pass up:

Dentists are alchemists:

redshoes: The Grangers did make an actual appearance in canon (in COS) and are frequently mentioned. The fact that they are both dentists COULD mark them as functioning as alchemists, since dentists work with most of the metals that mark stages of alchemy, as was discussed earlier in the thread.

Blushing = Harmony:

redshoes: [in reference to a GoF scene in which Hermione "flushed pink with pleasure" when Fake!Moody tells her she'd be a great Auror] In the second passage, there are 2 bits of possible alchemical symbolism. Moody's magical eye is one of the candidates we've discussed as an all-seeing eye. It rests on Hermione and perhaps sees her true nature, her destiny--as a person being transformed into gold (Aur-or). Then she flushes pink. What other color could she flush I suppose? On the other hand, pink is used in alchemy to symbolize the joining of red (Harry) and white (Hermione), so that could be the reason JKR included it here.

Harry and Hermione's love will bring the French and the English together:

Salamon2: Granger is found predominately in English and French cultures. It comes from the French: grainger, which originated from the Latin word for Grain.

It's popularity,

while it's not in the top 100 surnames of the UK, it is fairly popular.

It's #492 in France.

More importantly, for me, is it connects Hermione to the Norman French aspects, which have predominately been associated with our Slytherin villains

Rowling's books are so typically British, all the bad guys are French/Norman orignated. You see this pattern in LOTR and TLWH, with the "Frenchification" of England being viewed as a negative. Oh and don't forget Ivanhoe!

Lestrange, Nott, Bulstrode, Malfoy, Gaunt, Crabbe, Goyle, Rosier, Mulciber, etc.

Heck, Riddle even changed his name to sound more "Norman French".

So if Harry were to "marry" his opposite, it would make sense for the reconciliation betweeen English/French, a well known feud between the two, which JKR has shown in her works via the antagonism against Fleur (The pairing could be symbolized slightly with the Bill/Fleur pairing, albiet probably not because William is the name of the first Norman French King of England).

However, the Weasleys in my opinion are the connections to the Welsh/Celtic heritage. Harry the English, and Hermione the French.

Oh Harmony. Keep tilting at those windmills. ♥

Thanks to [info]ikuko for finding this mine of comedy gold.

It took me five minutes of staring at it going "huh?" to make the mental connection from Hermes --> Hermione.

Now, that's probably just me being slow on the uptake today, but I still gotta laugh at the idea that it CLEARLY MEANS HARMONY, because...well.

Like I said at f_w, if she'd grabbed in the other direction, it would have been the lamp. Which would have proved Harmony, because Hermione is known for carrying fire enclosed in glass, JUST LIKE A LIGHTBULB!

If it had been on the bathroom tiles, Harmony surely would have been vindicated, as people brush their teeth in the bathroom, and Hermione's parents are dentists.

If she'd signed a book in the room... no, too obvious. That might have been disastrous, since defacing a book could be symbolic of shunning a bookish character, and therefore it would have been a HeRon sign. Thank heaven she didn't do that.

If she'd signed the coffee-maker, it would have been a lock. People drink coffee with toast, after all.

However, the Weasleys in my opinion are the connections to the Welsh/Celtic heritage. Harry the English, and Hermione the French.

...and since neither Welsh nor any of the other British Isles Celtic-derived mythologies really fit in with the universal symbolism of alchemy, the obvious alchemical deeper meaning of the HP series requires that both Ron and Ginny be abandoned in favor of the One True Anglo-Norman Pairing.

But I doubt the HeRon's will admit to anything than that 1. either it was the only bust in the room,

Why, naturally, every room in that hotel contains a full panteon of all deities a patron might wish to worship. Including those who believe that creation of idols is forbidden. JKR had to go through approximately 2857 busts of gods of assorted religions before she could find the one suitable to send a clear Harmonian message. About Percy's owl.

I've been thinking for awhile that some crazy fan is going to pull a Misery on JKR when the book doesn't turn out how they wanted, but reading the stuff here on this community makes me almost certain that if it does happen, it will be a Harmonian who does it.

Honestly, I don't associate "Granger" with Frenchness at all - obv. Jo is making a connection to the Grange Movement and used it to symbolize Hermione's desire to help the lower classes.*

I doubt the HeRon's will admit to anything than that 1. either it was the only bust in the room, or 2. that it was probably the nearest and most convenient bust on JKR's way out of the hotel suite for the final time.

Oh, those He-Rons. What kind of logic are they cooking with?

So if Harry were to "marry" his opposite, it would make sense for the reconciliation betweeen English/French, a well known feud between the two, which JKR has shown in her works via the antagonism against Fleur (The pairing could be symbolized slightly with the Bill/Fleur pairing, albiet probably not because William is the name of the first Norman French King of England).

This is the BEST QUOTE. So Harry/Hermione does more to show a reconciliation between the English and the French than Bill/Fleur, when Fleur IS French. Oh, but there was Wm. the Conq., so let's not let this sense go to our heads!

*No, I am not serious.

Also, has it ever occurred to any of these people that maybe they're giving JKR just a little bit too much credit for having thought some of this obscure shit they're talking about through as much as they're saying that she did?

I mean, seriously, this is the woman who gave her werewolf a name that is essentially the equivalent of Wolfy "Hairy Howling Werewolf Guy - Ask Me About My Full-Moon Discount!" McBitesalot. Subtlety, like mathematics, is not generally her strong point.
