BNF Infighting is Back In Style!
Put down the crack posts from Portkey for a second. I've got classic BNF in-fighting wank here. About H/Hr of all things, so it belongs here. The two main players are some of the oldest BNFs in the fandom, and they've come to an impasse.

Background. Penny Linsenmeyer ([info]genealogygirl here) was the founder of the Harry/Hermione ship more than six years ago on HPFGU. Barb ([info]psychic_serpent) wrote one of those mega-trilogies about the trio that were so popular back then. The Pyschic Serpent trilogy was well known for including a dizzying number of ships in its course, but it ended in R/Hr and H/G. Still, Penny and Barb were supposed to be friendly, particularly as they'd both been mod team members at HPFGU: Harry Potter for Grownups.

As far as I can make it out, this is the course of events.

Barb linked in her LJ to a essay she'd written: Canon Clues, Red Herrings and Superstition where she rips to shreds the Harmonians who believe Harry/Hermione is in the cards. Well, she also makes a lot of interesting points about the structure of the books, but we know what's important to setting off a wank, right?

Penny left very TL;DR comment on Barb's LJ defending H/Hr.

Barb responded back, "Oh, that was so funny, Penny, the way you proved my points for me! Especially with that "interpretation" of the post-Cho-kiss conversation--absolutely hysterical! Are you sure you didn't miss your calling as a stand-up comic?"

Penny then goes to defriend Barb and apparently discovers she's not on Barb's flist. She writes a long angsty post about the experience, only mentioning Barb as 'Fan B.'

In the comments of the post, Penny produces a list of things JKR could do to make reparation to the people she has injured.

Barb explains on her LJ that she was giving Penny a dose of her own medicine.

Then she posts a long explanation of when and how she friends people, which includes a thinly disguised commentary on the Penny thing.

ETA: [info]flyingphoenix provides a link to Act One of this drama: here, in which the said fans duke it out several months ago. Delayed payback, all right.

Penny then goes to defriend Barb ...

Oh, not an LJ defriending! Quelle horreur!!

... and apparently discovers she's not on Barb's flist.

O, falsely, falsely murder'd!

Geez, the purpose of the friends list is to make make it easier to read the journals of various people by collecting them together into one spot. If a person is an absolute saint, but writes about things that don't interest me, I'm not going to friend them. Just because the LJ developers happened to name it "friends list" doesn't mean they're actually your friends.

(Well, it's also the means by which you decide who can read your locked posts, but that's because the friends list has been overloaded with functionality that doesn't belong there. The LJ developers are planning on eventually splitting up the "who I read" and "who I trust" list into two separate list.)

Penny's list of reparations: Girl, you keep going like that and ALL OF YOUR NOSE HAIR IS GOING TO FALL OUT.

Okay, I lose at shipping. Barb's essay gets a big honkin' TL;DR from me. Put a little pep into it, lady!

But it got much more exciting when I realized JKR was supposed to apologize for not telling us which ships were going to be written instead of leading us on as if it was a *gasp* mystery!

I'm sure there's funnier stuff in there, but man those two certainly like to have their say. I need cliff notes for their comments.

Do people really get that uppity when people don't friend them back? I friend someone because I am interested it things they write and say, or because I have had a lot of favourable interaction with them. If they don't want to friend me *shrugs shoulders* why should I care.

It's not as if my journal is all that interesting to read anyway, not to mention it is currently misbehaving

I'm willing to concede she might not have been aware of just how acrimonious and divisive it had become ...... but surely she could glean there were emotional attachments on both sides and that one side was going to have a terrific fall?

I get the impression that JKR regards Harmonians as an amusing lunatic fringe and nothing more. She doesn't owe them anything. It's not JKR's problem that people get themselves so worked up about this stuff. People are responsible for their own emotions and reactions. If you're that upset about JKR has to say about your beloved ship, then maybe you need to chill the fuck out instead of pointing fingers at her.

Personally, I don't like any of the messages that I get from the whole H/G scenario: "if you just act interested in other boys and make yourself enticing, your love interest will eventually notice you;" and "if you are pretty and a good Quidditch player, our Hero will notice you

Except that isn't what happened (note: I am not arguing whether or not H/G was well-written and/or well-presented).

It's just terribly sad, imho, that people can put common courtesy and respect for diversity of opinions aside so easily. The sadder thing is that when I went into LJ to remove Fan B from my flist, I discovered that I'm not on Fan B's flist and apparently never was. Ah well. Hopefully, I can continue to work with Fan B without too much acrimony. It's just sad though.

IT'S SO GODDAMN SAD THAT SHE CAN'T FEEL THE STING OF MY UNFRIENDING! She's supposed to suffer, damn it!

It's the sense of *entitlement*, more than anything else, that alternately astonishes, maddens, and amuses me.

JKR does not owe you an explanation. She does not owe you an apology. She does not OWE you anything. She wrote the books. If you don't like them, fine. Don't read them. Simple as that. The books are not about you, or what you want. GET THAT INTO YOUR THICK HEADS YOU IDIOTS!

That's a whole bunch of tl;dr that I just can't be bothered with right now. I mean, as an English major, I know there are times where you have to bs to fill a page requirement, but this ain't class.

Though, I gotta say, I thought that Hermione was all frowny at Harry's kiss with Cho because wasn't Cho, like, still freaking out about Cedric at that point? I didn't think it was because Hermione liked Harry or because Hermione was concerned for what Ginny would think.

[info]genealogygirl: I can’t subscribe to your notion that “a clue is ONLY a clue if it does in fact point toward the conclusion that occurs in the story; otherwise it IS a red herring or misinterpretation.”

Of course you can't. Because then you would have to admit that what you so desperately hoped were clues really weren't. You would have to admit that you were wrong, and your image of yourself as a critical reader with an eye for subtlety and nuance would suffer for it.

That said, falling back on "all interpretations of the text are equally valid, no matter what the author's stated intent may be" is horseshit.

Yes, reading a novel is a very personal and subjective experience; each reader will find things within a novel that intrigue them, and perhaps even affect them deeply. Some of the things that strike such strong emotional chords may not even be central to the narrative.

But it's up to the reader to accept that what affected them so profoundly may indeed be irrelevant, or run counter, to the author's intentions. It is possible to have a deeply personal response to a novel, and to be affected by it in ways the author never considered--even in ways that would shock the author. But this is not the author's fault. It is not a failing of the source material. It is not merely a different, yet still-valid interpretation of the text. And when the author fails to deliver on the individual reader's peculiar fantasy, that does not make them a bad writer, or immoral, or unfaithful to a higher literary ideal.

Projecting one's own fantasies, desires, and preoccupations onto the source material isn't a bad thing at all. It could be argued that there would be no fandom without it. But it's the reader's responsibility to keep track of where the source material leaves off and where their own inventions, their own wishes for how things ought to be, begin.

I was attempting to make the point that if any and all interpretations of any piece of writing are valid, regardless of what the author says her intent is, that means that I stand by my right to respond the way that I did.

What surprises me is that it took this long. Barb has been writing essays like this for years now, and I've never seen her be terribly polite about shipping, either.

And seriously? All this fuss because Penny couldn't be the one to bitchily unfriend? Gah. Grow up. If you want some sort of fannish validation/bitchy cutting resolution, outright comment to the person that you no longer want anything to do with them because you think they are horrible and cruel and overreact and don't take feelings into consideration. It'll be wanky, ridiculous, and most likely seem incredibly passive aggressive, but if you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT live without returning a perceived insult, you probably are those things anyway.

Holy crap. Someone wrote an essay that disproves Harmony and everything used to peddle it like the vile candy it is support it. We must now run onto that person's journal and bitch and whine and piss and moan forever because of the inhumanity and OH YOU DID NOT JUST DO THAT YOU DID NOT LEAVE ME OFF OF YOUR FRIENDS LIST BITCH NOW WE GOTTA START SOME DRAMA.

What's funny is that when you first hear about Harmony, you think of satire that you could write to mock it. But you find out that they do that themselves. It's actually beautiful, in a way.

BNFs? Check.
H/Hr vs. H/G and R/H? Check.
LJ defriending drama? Check.
People on current flist rushing to console the BNF?
Grudgery? Check.
tl;dr? Check.
Grownass people acting like 13-year-olds? Check.

All we need now are anonymice, sockpuppets, and thoughts about yaoi and we've got ourselves a veritable wank buffet.

I do think, as I said to Ali above though, that she could issue a short simple statement on her website that acknowledges she is aware there were hurt feelings and that assures the fandom that she respects the opinions and feelings of all her fans.

Oh yes, because it's all about you.

Get over your fucking self.
