Classy!
Hello Harmonians,

the idea behind Project Harmony is that we pull off a full page ad (maybe even more) in a magazine to finally be able to speak up and let JKR know how we feel.

I've done a similar project for another couple before and it got a reaction from producers and the actors. I wasn't in charge of it, but I hope we can all work together to figure this out.

God knows we won't change this horrible ending for Harry and Hermione, but I think it's time we speak up, not only to tell JK how we feel, but also to honor H/Hr and let the world know that we're still out there and we're not going anywhere.

...Yep, it's time for another Harmonian project to tell JKR how they feel! Just like the other great projects... that never really got pulled off.

"Nora", the organiser, also prepared a sample letter.

I wrote a first draft of the letter. It's just a suggestion. Feel free to add or remove anything or write down your own ideas.

This ad is an homage to the characters Harry Potter and Hermione Granger from the "Harry Potter" book series.

First and foremost, we'd like to thank J.K. Rowling for creating these two characters. In spite of the fact that the series ended with other pairings, we are still grateful for all the wonderful moments we got to read between those two. While we definitely saw the 'anvil sized hints' for certain other couples, they didn't capture our hearts. It was the deep bond between Harry and Hermione that did, no matter where it eventually led them. The traits that define their relationship are things that we all value in life: mutual respect, admiration, unconditional love and support, kindness, loyalty..... There are many scenes throughout the books that capture all these things, but one of them stands out to us: in 'Deathly Hallows', Hermione accompanies Harry to his parents' graves. He cries and mentally wishes to have something to put on the graves. Hermione senses it, conjures a wreath and silently holds his hand throughout. It is this scene that sums up why these two characters have so many fans, even though not a word is spoken between them. The understanding and depth to their relationship has yet to be matched by another and it is this love, sexual or not, that we will remember and carry with us from this series.

If all this makes us 'delusional', as stated by a website's member who shall remain unnamed, then we'll proudly accept that term and take comfort in the fact that we never felt the need to trash people in front of the books' author just because their opinions differ from ours.

Last but not least, special thanks to actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who portray Harry and Hermione beautifully in the movies and bring their magic to life brilliantly.

However, there's a problem: as havoc says:

"I think there should be a little more critisism towards book 7 in the letter. I like the ending (the small thank you to Dan and Emma) because it's quite small and I think it should stay that way."

Nora responds:

What do you suggest? I want the letter to be as respectful as possible. It'd be sad if we came off as whiny.

At which I laugh and laugh. Luckily, sarielle has a completely non-whiny addition.

"Many of us were disappointed that in both Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows Harry and Hermione seemed to lose some of their character traits that made them so special, seemingly in order to allow for the final pairings to happen. To be honest, this was rather hurtful; all of a sudden these two characters we so adored became people we felt we hardly knew anymore, all for the sake of two romantic relationships that we felt served no great purpose to the plot. However, we must reiterate that we respect Ms Rowling and her work very much, and acknowledge that just like in life, fiction doesn't always work out the way we want it to."

You know, I really hope they pull this one off. I'd buy that magazine.

ETA:
harryandhermione85 writes:
I agree that we shall not seem whiny, and that we shall not give Emerson any satisfying. But we have to point out she offended us with her behaviour, and that we are proud to be "delusional".

Of course, it's more accurate with an ellipsis: I agree that we shall not seem whiny... and that we are proud to be "delusional".

Alright, I think the rest of fandom needs to mount a counterattack. We simply cannot allow them to get away with it. I think we need some tracts or pamphlets on "How to Spot and Deal With HP Crazy in the Wild." The last thing we need is to allow Anti-Harry groups more ammunition against our fun. I'll simply not stand for my family's smug attitude about HP's debated evil! I'll not stand for it, you hear!!

Also, yayomgthereswanknowhpfandomisawake! :D

*ahem*

Carry on.

I think this is a good thing.

No, really, I do.

Not because JKR is responsible for their pain, no. Their incredibly evident inability to fucking read for content and context is responsible for that. Oh yeah, and confusing the films with canon.

No, I think it's a good thing for one reason:

Full page ads in national newspapers/magazines are very expensive.

Unless one of those idiots has surprisingly deep pockets they won't be able to raise the funds for the ad.

Then maybe they'll realize their numbers are infinitely tiny compared to the Potter fandom as a whole (fifteen MILLION books sold in the first twenty-four hours) and shut the fuck up.

Okay, they won't. But I remember the fund raising which had to be done for the Buffy ads and so on...the cakes, the gifts to the cast and creators...and trust me, HarMOANians couldn't organize a catered lunch at McDonald's.

to finally be able to speak up and let JKR know how we feel.

FINALLY! After all this time! After years of staying completely silent and quietly taking the lies JKR fed to them without any whining, resentment, or veiled and not-so-veiled threats, the Harmonians are ready to speak up for themselves! Finally, they dare to question the oppressive tactics that Rowling has used against them for years! I say, STAND TALL HARMONIANS. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT YOUR SHACKLES.

Yeah, because it's not like close friends could understand each other without words. Only people who want to f**k each other's brains out can have that kind of understanding. < /sarcasm >

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Some of them are complaining about being wanked:

Fandom Wank is LOVVVVVING it, natch. They seem to be enjoying the meltdown more than the book though. It's like to them it's new when a fandom doesn't find something satisfactory. God forbid we not kiss up to JKR. Which is what they're doing, BTW. It's really sick, they're saying "I hope JKR is laughing at them", and taking pleasure from it.

And here's the ever-idiotic and arrogant bamaslamma29:

eah well, it's actually that a lot of fandom are laughing at HER for having given her more credit for intelligence and decent writing than she deserves. Some are angry and upset, but others are just laughing at what a joke it all turned out to be.

I assume Fandom Wank is skipping that part. But then they usually do put their own biased spin on what is happening. They end up looking like morons anyway, so what me care?

I'm curious what the more intelligent side of fandom is saying? I don't consider Fandom Wank to have much brain-provoking things to say... I wonder what the more intelligent R/Hr and H/G shippers are thinking.

Cheers, Bama

Thoughts on Harmoanians
[info]nekoama
2007-07-23 08:30 pm UTC (link)
I had a very, very close friend during my summer camp days who was of the opposite gender (this was between 11 and 13). We would talk forever, finish each other's sentences and were generally pretty close . And everyone was convinced we were dating. Everyone. It was like the big thing when we were 13, and even the 6-7 yr olds thought we were dating, and it didn't matter how much we denied it, because we were XX and XY, we just couldn't be just friends, it didn't work that way, we were too buddy-buddy. Stuck with me for years, and now I automatically refuse to ship just because one's a boy and one's a girl and they're buddies.
Coincidently, I now have two friends in the exact same situation.
I forgive the summer camp teasing and assumptions though, because everyone was under the age of 15 and still a little stupid.
These guys are all over 15 and should fucking. know. better. Do they all fall in love with their guy friends?
Mutual respect, admiration, unconditional love, support, kindness, loyalty are not romance-exclusvie. Dorks.

Hee! I totally thought she meant she was a Dawson/Joey fan from way back in the day, ripping off Project Soulmates. (I'm filled with fond memories now--it was the first fandom I ever followed online, with my nifty college DSL, and it was all about the wank. I loved me the crazy those shipper wars brought, and the insanity brought on by the finale. It was like a whole new world I'd never imagined could exist!).

Anyway, I dipped into the Wayback Machine to see if my mind was blurring how dumb those damn letters were, but no, they were totally as lame as I remember. (Of course, Dawson's Creek was considerably more hack-y than Harry Potter as a text, so to speak, but it was still insane, the pseudocide and gnashing of teeth and all).

Anyway, links--sorry the pages are so hard to read:

Project Soulmates (http://web.archive.org/web/20020402053108/http://www.projectsoulmates.org/)
(I'm not sure if the pages from the same date link individually--but it's worth checking both "A Plea to the Powers to Be" and "Wilmy Morning Star Article" for eerie/wanky similarities. I find the whole thing still pretty loltastic, but you may have had to be there. The bit about how to spell "soulmates" is also quite awesome.).
You wasted our lives! (http://web.archive.org/web/20030524014703/http://projectsoulmates.org/)

I thought the person who had managed to get the pairings wrong in about ten different fandoms was funny. I mean shouldn't one learn from previous mistakes not continually repeat them.

If Harry and Hermione didn't get their groove on after being left alone for WEEKS on end, it was never going to happen, but then JKR did tell them but they kept their ridiculous illusions up, so fuck em.

However, we must reiterate that we respect Ms Rowling and her work very much, and acknowledge that just like in life, fiction doesn't always work out the way we want it to.

See, that's the problem right there: their complete inability/unwillingness to comprehend that fact.

Yes, these horrible endings for Harry and Hermione, where they ended up marrying the person they ACTUALLY LOVE.

Ungreatful. Little. Bitches!

I know I risk being made fun of for applying earth logic and then there's added humiliation of having applied thought to this, but instead of the nutters paying to take out an ad, why don't they get someone to write an article about the legions of disappointed fans?

They wouldn't get their exact message out the way they want it, but they'd have a voice and it would be free.

Personally, I'm just here for the wank. I don't ship one way or the other although I do see the merit of Ron/Harry.

My favorite is how they're all like "well, the least she could have done is sunk us earlier so we wouldn't have gotten so attached." Because she did. Like 5794598439 times. Starting with the "Harry and Hermione are very platonic friends" quote.

You know, I'm surprised by how many people are interpreting the locket-Horcrux scene as a deliberate hit on the Harmonians. I would understand if Ron and Harry were OOC during the scene, or it didn't advance the plot, and it was just inserted in there for no other reason than to piss off shippers.

But it wasn't like that at all. It's very in character for Ron to have these insecurities, and for him to be able to overcome them. We've also seen that it's a classic Voldemort tactic to try and exploit others' weaknesses in this way. And I thought Harry's response was completely in keeping with his regard for both Ron and Hermione. Reading the books, he really *does* think of Hermione as his sister, and vice versa. I thought it was a great scene: a pivotal turning point for both the plot and the characters.

Frankly, I think there's been so much shipping wank that disgruntled shippers are apt to perceive every. little. thing. JKR writes as a direct hit at them, when they probably don't even register on her radar 99% of the time.

OK, so let me get this straight.

- When Harry's attracted to Ginny, it's because she's a slut and a whore.
- When Harry can spend weeks in a tent without groping Hermione, it's clearly unrealistic and OOC.

- When Ron shows caring and concern for Hermione, like putting his arm around her or offering to disguise her as a Weasley cousin, he's a date-rapist who's just trying to get some action.
- When Harry puts his arm around Hermione, it's a sign of twu wuv.

- When Ron's screaming his head off at Malfoy Manor and running around trying to rescue Hermione from Bellatrix, it's OOC and insulting to Harry's character, because he's only trying to think of a plan and yelling at a piece of mirror in desperation and so he *clearly* no longer cares what happens to Hermione. OMG Jo is trying to force R/Hr to happen!
- When Harry's worried that Hermione might be dead in Book 5, it's not because she's, oh, his best friend, but again, a sign of twu wub.

- When Ron and Hermione are "communicating silently," it's OOC because Ron is the Spawn of Satan and could not possibly understand such a lofty, elevated mind as Hermione's.
- When Harry and Hermione communicate silently it's not because they've known each other for years, it's because they're soulmates.

- If Hermione marries Ron, it's an anti-feminist, misogynistic statement. And despite the fact that we don't know what *any* of the main characters' careers are, except for Neville, she must have turned into a BABY MACHINE and is being abused by her husband.
- If Hermione marries Harry, it's the greatest love story of all time and automatically elevates the Harry Potter series to a work of art.

Is this basically what they're saying? Because I'm not sure if I made my logic insane enough.

I personally love the fact that Rowling didn't go for the "Hero gets the main girl" storyline, which has been done to death.

Isn't anyone else utterly charmed by the fact that this bright, spirited, intelligent girl *doesn't* make the obvious choice (unlike practically every other girl at Hogwarts--witness the Harry fangirling in Book 6) in going for the hero, but falls head over heels for his loyal, hot-headed, awkward-and-yet-adorable best friend, whom everybody else overlooks? Because I loved it.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned another hit to the Harmonians in the book:

"I notice that your birthday cake is in the shape of a Snitch," Scrimgeour said to Harry. "Why is that?"

Hermione laughed derisively.
(emphasis mine.)

"Oh, it can't be a reference to the fact that Harry's a great Seeker, that's way too obvious," she said. "There must be a secret message from Dumbledore hidden in the icing!"

FOR THE WIN.

What did they want? An author's note in the first novel saying "OH AND BY THE WAY RON AND HERMIONE ARE TOTALLY GOING TO HOOK UP LATER SO DON'T GET YOUR LITTLE FANGIRL HEARTS UP"?

But why waste all that money on an advert? Think of all the pumpkin pies they could mail her! If t.v. fans have taught me nothing else, then at least they have taught me the effectiveness of mailing protest foods.

(Seriously, though, what does pumpkin pie taste like? I am the sort of person who is fundamentally opposed to both pumpkins and pie,but it sounds more and more delicious every time I read it.)

Sorry to post anonymously, but JournalFen totally isn't letting me make an account.

H/Hr has always made me laugh. If you haven't already, you guys should check out the latest fanfiction. It's golden. Someone rewrote the locket horcrux scene to be H/Hr. Someone also rewrote the epilogue only to have Harry with Hermione, Ron with Luna, and Ginny knocked up by some stranger and now dead after giving birth to a daughter.
