Finally, the account of Thursday night! Yes, I have more or less slept since getting home from the concert. Anyway. Thursday afternoon I had my MHMR appointment, Sucked as usual. I was supposed to see the doctor but they fobbed me off onto a nurse. Grr. But I got home in plenty of time to take a nap before showtime. Hitting Frank beforehand didn't work out :( Was looking forward to it, too. But that was not the important part! doombuggie and I chattered on ride there, and I told him this would probably be the most fun I'd had since my RHPS days, and we discussed our mutual RHPS days a bit, and the possibility of investigating the current local cast, preferably with rehd_fawx. ( What I wore )We were early enough to get good parking, which is always nice. We hung around a bit, and then we went up to the merch table, cuz Voltaire was there! doombuggie bought a couple of CDs and had them signed, and I gave him, as I'd hoped to, the bottle ofConjure Oils La Calavera (which he sniffed and seemed to like... he also asked if I was the one who made it, which makes it two for two since Neil Gaiman asked if I wa a Labbie when I gave him a bottle of Shub... now I just need to find a goth icon to give a bottle of Arcana to) and got my copy of OH MY GOTH signed. [Unknown LJ tag] Moments after that was taken, I got an unexpected Voltaire-hug! Of the friendly variety, not the creepy one. It was smile-making. Waiting time. The very loud DJ music, bright spinning flashing lights, and smoke machines were far too much for me, and I mostly huddled up with my eyes closed so I wouldn't burn out. doombuggie also greatly overestimated my ability to hold a conversation in a noisy club, which is pretty much nil. Then we had the opening act. Oh lord! He played a keyboard with so much bass that the seat of my metal chair vibrated, which is the best that can be said of him. He had this wannabe-Nick-Cave thing going and sang as if he'd been gargling ground glass and lye, but his speaking voice was normal. He did a few 'oooooo I'm morbid' songs, and then... "Beth" by Kiss. I thought we had reached the pinnacle, but he followed it with "Chim Chim Chiree" from Mary Poppins. Good thing I'd just hid the restroom or I might have wet myself. If this dude stuck to doing incongrous covers he could be the next Richard Cheese! And then. And then. It was magic, completely magic. The man has astonishing stage presence, just a wonderful personality that shines through. doombuggie went to do a little more circulation, and during 'BRAINS' a simply adorably pink-haired girl came up to compliment my barrettes. She asked where I got them and I let her know they'd been a Walgreens Halloween item. Poor dear looked so disappointed! Now, the thing about these barrettes... I had them both on one side because the way they were made, if you wear one on each side, one would be upside down. So it was an easy snap decision to pull one out and give it to her. I mean, this was a fifty cent barrette. The gleeful expression was worth much more than that, and she kissed me, too! And it gives each of us a nice little extra memory of an already awesome concert. As I've said, Voltaire was busily being awesome, doing a lot of his classics and a few new ones. Each one had me enthralled. And then... Truly Voltaire is a Messenger of Fate, for he closed with this I yelled "FUCK THE BACK ROW!" scary loud. And I tried to do a standing ovation, and I fell down. Stone cold sober, folks. I'm just that cool. And that is basically how it went. Current Mood: sleepyCurrent Music: Voltaire - Crusade |

If they've cast Bilbo for The Hobbit (assuming they have), why can't they just spit it out? I mean, how long did it take for them to tell us that Elijah Wood had been cast as Frodo? AAARRRGGGHHH.
As for who should play Bilbo, I still say Russell Tovey, but I suspect he'd be too busy with Being Human. |

Linkses! Short one today. First of all, marmots! How can you not like marmots? Everyone likes marmots. We like deer and we like marmots and we like all the fluffy animals and we really like the moon. ;) There is now a mouse designed specifically for use with OpenOffice. I am intrigued but feel I wouldn't use half the functionality. Many of you may be familiar with Failblog. Well, now there's a blog detailing the opposite - Succeedblog! There are some truly impressive feats in there, although in some cases, I do have to ask why? ION, someone's found a mandrake! This is really clever and yet disturbing - Face Paint artist from Michigan paints his face to look like the members of Kiss, octopi and a dog's arse. Um. Yes. It's good, but it's not right! Not for the face paint phobic, that. Everyone's got a Twitter now, and now even Big Ben's got one. Nifty but a tad repetitive, I feel. Daily Fail's current poll is more leading than even I'd expect. Should female MPs be allowed to employ cleaners on expenses? Well, yes obviously. Get in there and skew it, my friends. :) And finally! Got kids? Worship the Elder Gods? Want to make sure the kids grow up in your footsteps (or flipper tracks or tentacle trails, depending on just how far you've gone with it)? Look no further. Let this educational video assist you. The Adventures of Lil' Cthulhu. I feel it lays the finer points of the mythos out quite adequately. :) Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: Muse - Uprising |

Perhaps it's time for a post that isn't voice. Especially since I'm getting very low on minutes and won't get paid until Monday at the earliest.
I'm getting over the bronchitis rather well, I suppose. Some lingering cough/throat issues, but they're starting to clear up. *knocks on wood* Work seems to be settled into a relatively steady schedule that I hope remains so for a while. Perhaps long enough for me to find something better. If work has settled, I can hopefully work out a routine so I get my fun times and relaxation along with my ass-busting.
Only vaguely related to work is this random titbit.
When I started this job a month ago, I had to buy a new belt. So I bought a belt – 40 inches long, so I could wear it without feeling as though I'm about to be cut in half. When I started this job, I had to wear the belt at the second to last notch to be comfortable. Now, only a month later, I have to cinch the belt to the fourth notch just to keep my trousers snug. And the trousers that fit fairly snugly when I started this job now… do not fit so snugly. I suppose the combination of greatly increased physical activity and diminished food supply/poor diet have indeed resulted in weight loss. Or a loss of fat at the very least.
Speaking of food, I still need to eat dinner and I'd like to get in some writing before I have to pass out.

Wow, I wouldn't have recognize her if M6 didn't use the same voice for the dubbing. The daughter in the xmas episode of NCIS of season 6, it's Daisy from Bones.
Another MW/SM video from 7x03, I wonder where the "No, keep going" was. I think it's just after, Sean is laughing and the shirt is opened.
Michael: *do his joke* *wait for Sean's reaction.* Sean: *awed* "It's beautiful."

Rambly post of rambliness. Also: boy! :D Right now, I'm learning to say the days of the week in Czech to facilitate communication between me and my current crush. See, my friend Salma has two Czech friends who're here studying Arabic, and being a good friend, she introduced me because she thought I'd like Tomáš. And I do; he's cute, funny, very sweet, and pretty smart and cultured. I just wish he wasn't leaving in early December. Anyway, I don't know if he's even interested in me, or if he's just being nice to me because I'm Salma's friend. Last night, I took my cousin and went to visit him and his friend in their flat. We spent a nice evening drinking and talking. Layla and I even sang to them all the comical patriotic songs we know. And tomorrow we're taking them on a felucca. I'm even skipping uni. >.>
Oh, speaking of uni, I'm enjoying this semester. It's more difficult and more satisfying than the last two years. Even though some subjects are whopping my ass (*cough*translation*cough*). And I'm beginning to have a clearer idea of what I want to do in grad school.
In conclusion: yay! |

Recent downtime, video posting delays, and other things going wrong This was posted originally at my WordPress blog, here.
As you’ve probably noticed, I fell behind on my video posting. I couldn’t get the time, and now I’m way behind: I’m already back in Houston. The same goes for my photo posts.
A factor in this problem was a few power outages here in Houston that took my uninterrupted power supply down for the count. As such, this site has been available only intermittently. This has also hampered my job hunting: until yesterday, I couldn’t even access my Craigslist scraper, and that’s fully half of the postings to which I respond.
Today, if you follow me on Twitter, you noticed that the site was down very briefly while I remedied the power problem. We’re now on a much larger power supply, capable of serving a 42″ HDTV, the DSL modem, cable box, a PS3, a Wii, and a Time Machine (for my mom’s backups and house Internet routing), as well as the box on which this site is hosted (because I needed a hard line in to the DSL modem to get this thing on the Internet, and the other available site, by the print server, is in much worse shape). Don’t try this at your home, kids, I’m what you might call an expert.
Those of you who have been following me for a while also know that I’ve been working on losing weight. I’ve now lost over 62 pounds. I was surprised to have lost 5 pounds on the trip, considering the fact that I was eating a lot of fast food (though it was mostly Chic-Fil-A and Subway, both of which have excellent low calorie menu selections) and was staying in a house where the idea of calorie counting was anathema. However, it’s good to be home where I can get a high-impact yet relatively low calorie breakfast (a smoothie made with nonfat yogurt and an apple, which provides 2 servings of fruit, 2 servings of milk, a multivitamin, 3 glasses of water, a serving of lean protein, and 2 teaspoons of cis-unsaturated oils1, for less than 300 Calories). It satisfies my dairy, multivitamin, lean protein, and oil needs for the day, freeing me to eat more interesting things at lunch and/or dinner.
1. There are five oils in this category: extra virgin olive, canola, sunflower, flax, and safflower. |

Fic Rec, DCU I have a weakness for comics fanfiction, particularly DC comics. I think I tend toward that universe more than Marvel's because my favorite part of comic fic is "identity porn," where the characters use different alter egos during...well, you know. mithen writes fabulous slash fiction set in the DCU. Her primary pairing is Batman/Superman. Today, she posted a piece that had me desperately trying not to laugh out loud in a library. It's one of the funniest fics I've read recently, but most of the humor hinges on playing with characters' alter egos. If you're not up on the major players in the DCU (especially the Bruce Timm Justice League cartoon), you probably won't enjoy this fic. Otherwise, even if you don't like the pairing, I strongly recommend giving it a read. Personal TourThis entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth. There are comments on that post. Random Rec: A Little Frayed at the Edges by zephyrina (MCR) I'm disappointed to see that there are only a few comments on this excellent fic, so I decided to give it a quick pimp. To quote from myself: "It's not a pairing(s) that I'm normally interested in, and a lot of these polyamory stories involve cheating at some point, so I came in a bit doubtfully. But you handled it all smoothly, and made all three of the characters act like reasonable, intelligent adults, so the maturation of their relationships felt satisfying and real." Another "I should be in a better mood" post ( Cut because about being depressed and how it makes me feel )Happier things! I have decided to apply Discord from the Xenaverse at hogwarts_hocus. I made the journal and some icons (I was shocked at how long it took to find good icon pics!) and was gonna work on the app but then I started feeling shitty. Also, Ben & Jerry's Mission to Marzipan is yummy and fans of almond flavored ice cream should seek it out. Current Mood: sadCurrent Music: Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark |

From the " Dork Age" page on TVTropes: Doctor Who didn't have a Dork Age. Its fans did. Star Trek fans don't care if people think they're sad, and even when it does sting, they don’t blame the show for it. British Doctor Who fans, faced with the same nerd characterisation in the 'eighties, reacted with spite to the object of their affection. 'If I'm called a nerd for liking the show, its the show's fault for not being more popular', the thinking seemed to run. Like teenagers cursing their parents for the very DNA that formed them, British Who fans lambasted the then-current production team (who had made themselves, for that pre-internet era, unusually accessible to fans) for failing to conform to the tenets of a golden age that never existed. The idea that Dork Age could be applied to around a third of a programme’s life is silly, but the idea that some fans are still so angry with John Nathan-Turner, a man whose career and health foundered on the attempt to give them what they wanted, that they’ll fling any insult they can to describe his work and the work of others – that’s genuinely tragic. Part of the Dork Age concept is that it is followed by a return to the status quo. That hasn’t happened. The new run has less in common with this subculture’s mythical template of True Who than even the most radical of ‘eighties departures. The reason they like it better is because, armed with a larger budget and the BBC’s willingness to publicise it, it’s popular again. Doctor Who is once again something they can refer to liking in place of actual conversation, a crayon for the blank spaces in their social selves. Chilling. Is it just me, or does someone have an ax to grind? |

Things that drive me crazy... For some reason, I've recently recalled a couple of times when I got into arguments with people over The Lord of the Rings movies. In particular, this sort of exchange: Them: OMG they took out this, this, this, and this; it SUCKS. Me: In that case, you should check out the extended editions -- they've got all those scenes in there. Them: Yeah right, like I'm gonna sit through 4 hours when I could be doing other stuff. Me: ...
What I should have said then was, "So you hate the theatrical movie for cutting out certain scenes for length reasons, but won't watch those scenes in the extended version because they make the movie longer?!... it seems to me you don't really care what they included in the movie; you just want to complain." Hoorah for hindsight. |
