Even I can't believe myself
(I'll come back and add more links after class, sorry.)

There have been several essays on hp_essays lately that were about How JKR Ruined DH. I was sassy in the comments, which led to many getting frozen in the latest one.

Then the mods made a post about the guidelines, and I (chocolatepot) proceeded to wank alllll over the place. I was replying to every comment. I threw a tantrum and went crazy.

Bonus: I promised inthread never to come back, so you have a flounce - and there's no telling whether I'll hold true to that.

ETA: back!

The really ridiculous part of this is that I've only been seriously watching the comm for about two weeks. Before that, I just used newsletters to end up there.

On the sixteenth, professor_mum wrote "A Deathly and Hollow Rant" and posted it to HP_essays. It occurred to me that this was not an essay, merely a list of reasons DH hacked prof_mum off. It seemed like most people were agreeing, which further irritated me, so I posted "Lol completely not an essay" (and I am very, very sorry I did so, I'm sorry, meme!) in response, expecting maybe a little wank in return. (Actually, I'm not sorry, because I made a friend by doing it!) There was some.

A few days later, maryh10000 wrote an essay about why JKR wasn't good enough to Snape, and I disagreed once more. This led to a civil discussion. Possibly because it's an actual essay.

A few days after that, julie_dslv posted a reaction to DH that was mainly negative. This time, I was not the only unhappy person. Nearly everyone who commented before the mod came had something to say about the poster's non-understanding of certain topics. At one point, it looked like some sockpuppeting was going on. I'm still not sure what happened there. Finally, siriaeve froze the threads and left a comment stating that she wanted people to be nice and if there was a problem, email the mods.

I did so, and had a very civil discussion with siriaeve in which I was given the impression that the mods were actually interested in what others had to say on the issue of posting guidelines. We exchanged several emails and all was happy in Chocolatepotland.

Then goddlefrood, another mod, posted what seemed to be a request for discussion on the posting requirements. Remembering how well the email convo had gone, I replied right off the bat. People replied angrily to me, I replied spazzily back. The mod that replied was overly stressed and didn't really help the situation. Wank wank wank.

So are you the one who blew off the sockpuppeting thing mentioned in tunxeh's comment, or was that one of the others?

Ooo, go you! I mean, if you're going to wank, go all out. Get it all out. You've done grandly. Still, I'm only going to give you an 8.6 because you blew the dismount by not coming back in with a School-of-Heidi & Cassie-Non-Apology apology.

I feel so much better after posting it here. I don't normally do this, so when I do my body gets flooded with adrenaline and I can't concentrate. I was jittery all morning and sick-feeling. I posted the abbreviated version here because I knew I'd get the catharsis from typing it out that I wouldn't if it were on F_W - then I'd probs just feel worse. Not that I wasn't planning on posting it anyway, I mean.

Interesting that the mod in this post seems to care only about the comments questioning the original poster's sincerity, and not to care about the evidence of sockpuppetry on the original poster's part.

it looked like some sockpuppeting was going on. I'm still not sure what happened there.

Here's what happened:

1. [info]julie_dslv makes the post of her "essay", and mentions in it that the only essays she's read about HP were recced to her by her friend, "the lovely [info]safakus".

2. Two people reply to the essay in less than glowing terms, [info]ladylavinia and [info]the_abinator. Both comments get replies. These replies were apparently not from [info]julie_dslv, but from [info]safakus, but apparently spoke as if they were from the author.

3. The replies from [info]safakus are deleted. [info]the_abinator tries to reply to one of them: the thread is here. [info]the_abinator sees that it was deleted, and asks, "And what happened to your post?" The reply, from [info]julis_dslv this time, is "I have two different accounts, one for RL people and one for internet people. I used the RL account accidentally."

4. They continue talking, and then [info]safakus comes back to defend [info]julie_dslv as if she was another person, refering to her as "she" and saying "I find her review strangly refreshing and in perspective."

5. [info]the_abinator calls her out for sock puppetry, saying they still have the comment notification from [info]safakus which [info]julie_dslv said was her "other account". The thread was frozen shortly thereafter, and neither [info]julie_dslv or [info]safakus ever replied.

Also, [info]safakus replies directly to the essay, again as if they were a distinct person, saying "And it's awfully ballsy of you to share your essay with us, in a community where us hardcore fans love to tear everything apart."

And [info]safakus also gets into it with someone here, before being called out again for being the author in disguise.

Looks like classic small time sockpuppetry to me, though buddies sharing their passwords is a possibility, I suppose.

"I too thought that the phrase "LOL completely not an essay" was nasty in the extreme and served no purpose except to get a rise out of the author"

Yes, it's obviously cutting, harsh criticism of the sort that H.L. Mencken and Dorothy Parker would have been proud to sling.

Seriously, what?

I just don't get fandom essays because they always seem to lack thesis statements. I mean, what are essays without thesis statements? Really?

You are a bit twatty in there, yes. But, wow, that F1 person gets riled up over someone misspelling their internet handle when it could have been a clear typo anyway? Er. Okay.

If it helps the 'Snape' essay made me want to head-desk because the author was assuming a lot about the author's intentions based on things she may not have said.

Yes, I know that's what you implied. That's what I said you implied. But I also said that I am afraid to comment now, and that therefore you are privileging your right to not worry about people disagreeing with you in less-than-completely-polite terms above my right to not worry that the mods will ban me for being used to dealing with people who don't mind bluntness.
