zines are not meant for money - EVER
I brainstorm a few ideas for fundraising through zines (I'm applying for the KaosPilots, a social enterprise school in Denmark) on [info]zine_scene. One idea involves selling my collection. All hell breaks loose.

Wait, you paid for the things and now you want to sell 'em for around the same amount, and that's considered profit? Am I missing something here?

You are not allowed to sell something that is your own property or you are OMG EVIL??? Because someone else spent money on that? Am I missing the point where someone held a gun to their head and forced them to make the zine and sell it at a cost that would make them lose money?

WTF? People sell their zine collections all the time.

I'm just astounded by the rudeness, there. :/ I mean, yeah, I can kind of see their point--and similar arguments have been made about doujinshi--but, man.

There was huge zinewank a couple of years ago when a notorious LJ beggar asked for donations to a zine library she claimed she was founding--only to turn around and list the donated zines on eBay when she got bored with the project (which had no chance of getting of the ground anyway).

That wank had some justification behind it because the beggar acted on false pretenses to get free zines. But this? You paid for the zines you have. They are your property. You are free to do whatever you like with them.

Zinesters have a really strange concept of property when it comes to their work. I can't think of any other creative endeavor where the creators raise such an ungodly stink at the idea of their work being resold, even if it's for a fraction of the cover price as part of a grab bag and the zine is no longer in print.

I used to make and sell screen- and block prints once upon a time. I put just as much of my energy and passion into my artwork as the zine kids put into theirs--but it never occurred to me to try forbidding any of my buyers from reselling those prints.

And yeah, maybe I'm an evil old capitalist whore, but whenever I see them go on about "We barely break even, much less make a profit!" I want to ask, "And whose problem is that?" It's the same impulse that makes me laugh at [info]ciaraxyerra's "My poverty trumps your educational goals" shitfit. Seriously, what spiny thing crawled up her ass?

yes, i was rude, because your ideas are enraging, disgusting, & insulting.

Am I missing something? Was there another step that you edited out?
Step 1. Sell zine collection.
Step 2. Put puppies to death by a thousand cuts.
Step 3. Profit!!

there is no "zine community"

Then what are they posting in?

So...since their major arguement seems to be that it's bad to resell because zinesters don't make much money off their projects, and most authors don't make much money off *their* stuff, HOW is this different from selling used books?

Every MediaWest is full of used zines. Nobody makes a profit on them - they go for 3-5 bucks a pop, at best.

<>selling your zine collection is fucked & wrong any way you slice it. i saw the comments where you compare it to selling clothes or records. that is a bogus & unfair comparison because zines are not clothes or records. zines are creations made out of love & the person who initially made the zines probably lost money making them. for you to turn around & profit off their hard work is patently fucked up.</i>

Bzuh???

They seem to be missing the point in their moral outrage- someone may have created these zines and have some rights at that point as to how they're used but you exchanged money for them and therefore the creator relinquished any right to control how the zines were used.

Fuck'em. They're only pissed because they didn't think of it first.

If you ever do feel a moral quandary about selling zines, just look at it this way: You are selling your time and effort in collecting them. People do it all the time - it's called special collections, and there are entire graduate programs dealing with the intricacies of selling identifiably coherent collections of format, genre, author, etc. Nobody would think you're betraying Stephen King if you sold an entire collection of his first editions; and in the case of zines, I would argue that you selling your collection is a case of moral right because without collectors such as yourself making these materials available and receiving some benefit from it, many zines would disappear forever. Most people who are criticizing you, I wager, would rather you throw them out than profit - and that's exactly what most people do, and the result is that most zines have an extremely short preservation life. That doesn't service the author's work, it destroys it.

We saw the same thing with pulp novels, without as much of the rabid foaming righteousness, and as a result they're incredibly hard to collect now that people have realized they have actual archival value. You can lather, rinse, and repeat with just about any accessible or functional written or drawn medium.

I don't understaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand. Help me, mommy.

Somebody made a thing. They then sold you that thing, probably at or below cost either for copyright reasons or some bizarre sort of Artistic Purity. Assuming there are no copyright issues, why can't you sell physical thing that you paid for?
