Okay, so John Solomon of Your Webcomic Is Bad and You Should Feel Bad. I've been snarking at him on the comments of the blog ever since they came out of hiatus, but when he did his latest review on Dresden Codak, he engaged with me when I questioned him calling Kimiko a Mary Sue. And it went on from there,

You're Robert Kelly? Awesome! I've been following that thread for weeks. I love when he claims he didn't Godwin himself, and when he whines that everyone hates him. There's nothing better than an angry trollish dude who gets butthurt at the drop of a hat. Lulz.

So I gotta ask - WHO is he? He claims to be such a Big Important Reallygood Writerguy, yet I find his writing to be absolute dross.

Frankly, apart from the "Fuego Fish" identity on the SA Forums, I have no idea.

I had no idea if he was trying to wriggle out of my arguments by deliberately or if they were just poorly presented and easy for him to break through.

But then again, I'm just trolling his blog.

It took me a couple seconds to realize that he made a Nazi comparison then backpedaled in the same sentence.

And it's not like the Internet Dick shtick isn't played out anyway. One guy deliberately looking for stuff to mock? That hasn't been funny since Maddox had to resort to making fun of hyperlinks in the middle of sentences and red lipstick.

That's... pretty much what I thought as well. The "Hob" stuff is cumbersome to get around, especially with the masses of exposition.

I sort of agree. Before the plot it was kind of incomprehensible without doing some research, now it's just kind of...incomprehensible and not every entertaining. It has moments and I love the art, but the fact that I can't bring myself to be irritated when he fails to update kind of says it all.

Then I wanna see Kimiko titties. I have read this and I am not aroused. It's like reading Sabrina Online only it's for non-furries. They come up with all this fucking "almost naked" shit and then leave you with blue balls, both of them.

Only Sabrina Online showed the skunk's ass if I recall.

Shorter Robinson: giving webcomic girls personalities only gets in the way of the fanboy lust, and one-off daily-newspaper-style jokes are better than any attempt at depth.

And this was only part 2? I didn't even try to look up and read part 1. How does he manage to hang onto any readers with such a flood of content-free verbiage?

Part 1's just Solomon ranting about Diaz's slow updating and how he's using DC as his primary income, as well as pimping Charles Stross as an "good" example of a fictional technological singularity.

For a second, I thought that Solomon was Stross because of this post. but apparently Solomon only wishes he was as successful.

Aw. I have never even heard of this webcomic, but Kimiko looks freaking adorable and doesn't (from what I've seen) strike me as Sue-ish at all.

Honestly, I just laugh. Solomon is a fairly coherent reviewer, and what he does (spits bile) he does quite well. No sense in nitpicking his arguments, reviews are meant to be subjective...

How do you get 'Mary Sue' when the plot is barely comprehensible to start with? Sure, it circulates around her, but it's not as if it's got some actual end goal to it.

I didn't make a comparison, I never said that Diaz is Hitler, I never said that Kimiko was a Nazi. I just said that the type of "next step of evolution" talk that's used in DC is akin to a belief held by Hitler.

I've been reading the archives of the comic, and from what I've seen so far, I think Solomon makes a good point about this panel here, although of course the OP will disagree:

I think this particular page was supposed to be where we feel empathy for her and excuse her craziness because she's had a rough life.

That reads like a pretty transparent pity grab for the main character, which is a great way to disarm uneasiness about her earlier sociopathy.

I stopped even trying to give Solomon the benefit of the doubt after the third or fourth anti-Mookie/Dominic Deegan posting. (Seriously, what is it about that comic that drives people to such frothy rage?).

That, and he (and/or one of his fellow reviewers) seems to hate transformation comics (like The Wotch or EGS) with uncompromising zeal.

If I want profane hate sprinkled reviews, I'll stick with Zero Punctuation. (At least Yahtzee nuts up and will tell you which games he actually likes and why).
