WoW Wank in the Making?
Some background info first:

With the release of Wrath of the Lich King, an "achievements" system was added in which you accomplish certain goals (ranging from the very simple like "buy a tabard" to the extremely difficult like "defeat every Northrend raid boss while in a 25-man raid group") and be rewarded for those accomplishments. Some of the rewards are pretty damn appealing, such as collecting 50 mounts, which will reward you with a special dragon mount.

Recently a debate has come up over one of the "meta-achievements", which is a special achievement you earn for earning a bunch of smaller achievements. Still with me? I'll explain. Blizzard has several holiday events in-game that coincide with real life holidays like the Chinese New Year, the Fourth of July, and Christmas. All the holidays have various achievements associated with them, and if, over the course of the year, you complete ALL the required achievements, you get a special meta-achievement called "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been..." and are rewarded with a special mount.

The meta-achievement in question is related to Brewfest, WoW's version of Oktoberfest. One of the achievements involved to get the meta requires you to have joined the "Brew of the Month Club" (something you could only do DURING Brewfest) and to sample their monthly brews for a year. Now, the Achievements system didn't come out until after Brewfest ended, thus leading many players to believe that requiring "Brew of the Year" to get the Brewfest meta-achievement is unfair, and threads have started in the Suggestions forum asking that it be removed.

Rather than sounding like I'm trying to justfy myself (since I'm in the thick of it, posting as "Alyrr"), I'll just point you guys to the thread and let you have your fun.

Now, I don't play WoW at all, but in this case does "mount" mean what I think it does - like something that you can ride around on?

In which case, does this mean that everyone's sad because they can't have a pony?

Hey, I never got a pony as a kid! This is the best I can do! T_T

Psh, pony. Anyone can get a pony (but if you're Horde it's undead). Everyone's sad because they can't get a prehistoric dragon.

Well okay. I'd wank for a prehistoric dragon pony too!

But wait, so is "the year" the actual year, like January-December, and ONLY this year? Or is it fiscal, so you can jump in at any point on the calendar, and as long as you complete all of the quests in a year's time, you get the special mount?

/doesn't play any MMORPGBLTBYOB's.

In terms of the Brewfest achievement, it's sort of a combination: you have to sample the monthly brew every month for a full year (October to September in this case). You can do this in any year, but with strings attached: you could only join the Brew of the Month Club during Brewfest, and after the month is out, you can't buy that month's brew anymore (so if you missed, say, December's brew, you're SOL until next December).

The objections are coming because this means, as it stands now, even if you do every other achievement to get the special mount, you still have to wait until the end of 2010 to get it.

Ah, OK. I can see where that would be incredibly frustrating.

...since when has there been a drake reward for this? Dammit, now I feel like an idiot for not bothering to get Merrymaker. (I don't have "the hallowed" either, but that's not my fault, damn the squashling)

What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been. The reward is a violet p-drake.

I'd love a pdrake but I've been picky with my world events. I did The Hallowed (had squashling from previous year) and Elder cause they were fairly easy and had rep or money involved. I think I'll be doing Love is in the Air because I think I might be alone in this, but 'The Love Fool' title cracks me up.

Wait, now I vaguely remember this XD I guess I'll have to wait until next year for my title anyway.

I don't have Merrymaker because you have to PVP. Which I could seriously wank about, but I'll be good.

Same here. I think my guildies will have to try to put me out of my misery, especially after all the CAPS LOCK that the With a Little Helper christmas achievement induced.

I can just about live with the 'kill 50 horde/alliance dressed as a gnome' ones, but my holy priest is sobbing at the thought of having to return flags in WSG. I just can't see it happening :(

Ughhhhh. I'm hoping that I'll be able to do it by doing WSG over and over with a party of like-minded guildies. The other ones shouldn't be nearly as difficult. I'm not sure why people in the WoWHead comments are fretting over the EotS flag more than returning in WSG.

We hates it too. D:

Which is the main reason I gave up on the drake before I really even bothered collecting those darned achievements. The only reason I'm working on the "Elder" title is that I play on a RP server and the thought of my rather young-for-his-race blood elf paladin running around with that title sends me into gigglefits.

I would *like* it if they removed it, but I wouldn't mind if they didn't. It'll just take a bit longer since I didn't really care about Brewfest when it came out before the achievements.

...I'm not sure why I'm working so hard for the mount, I find protodrakes hideous.

Err... maybe it's a you-specific bug, then. You're sure that you have the game itself selected before typing "jmtb02" (exactly like that, no quotes)? I accidentally got the window instead of the game a couple of times.

You should be getting the pink elephant achievement simultaniously.

One of the things I love most about Blizzard is their penchant putting all kinds of hilarious pop culture references in their games. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting on in WoW.

I totally complained on Vent to guildies about this the other day. But I still have to wait two years to get all the pets from Children's Week, so I'm not too annoyed.

The fact that I'm willing to wait two years for achievements says a lot, I think. O_o

I thought they changed this one, actually, so you didn't have to get all three. I could be wrong, but I thought I saw something about it on Wowinsider.

I'm currently in one of my stages where I play WOW only sparingly, so I might even miss out on Elder. I'd really like that drake, but the game's really not so fun when my friends are also on their sparse-play cycle.

They did change it! Thanks. That makes that achievement a lot better.

Yeah, I'm gonna try not to miss out on Elder, but I have a feeling that I won't get all the ones in the dungeons. My guild hasn't been running a lot of heroics recently and I hate pugs. :(

I hear that. And I'm not geared for the higher-level heroics yet, either -- things like HOL and HOS, and apparently you can only get to the Gundrak elder in heroic mode. I guess I could pay some gold for someone saved to the instance to get me there, but it just turns me off entirely. :( I probably wouldn't be able to kill Omen, either -- again, not geared.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]pocketfox
2009-01-28 07:23 pm UTC (link)
You actually don't have to kill Omen yourself. :) Just grab the quest and hop into the light that hits his body after he's dead. Boom, quest and achievement done.

Oh, cool. I've cheesed some Northrend group quests a similar way -- there was one that required beating up a magnataur for information, and I just happened to come up to his cave right at the same time that he spilled the info for someone else. Very handy!
