This is what happens when people expect far too much of canon.
Over on [info]fanficrants, [info]stella_andrea has something to say. She posts a long rant about how Orion slave girls aren't actually slaves, citing Memory Alpha and the Enterprise series.

Unfortunately, not every one agrees (including me).

[info]gehayi has this to say:

I remember seeing that recently in Memory Alpha.

It astonished me, because it in no way conforms to the Trek canon that I know--that of TOS. And YES, the Orion slave girls are called just that in TOS canon. There is no hint in the 79 original shows that they were ever anything else.

I have never seen any of the books Memory Alpha refers to. I don't know what they say in detail. I do, however, smell a retcon.

Other people make reasonable arguments about the size of canon, canon contradictions, and the (to be fair, debatable) suckiness of Enterprise.

[info]stella_andrea responds with this ETA:

You know people? I give up. Really. I had no idea people disregarded canon at will. I thought that wasn't allowed because, you know, canon is canon! But whatever. I'll stick to my "official" canon and hope that maybe, someday, someone will decide to look at the official canon and use it in some new and interesting ways. That's all I wanted. Someone to write something canon and make it work. *sighs*

It's haaaard out here for an Enterprise fan, peeps.

I love how people pointed out the misogyny of the trope she's clinging to and she got all OMG WHY DO YOU HATE FREEDOM CANON?!? I've got a lot of serious love for [info]alara_r right now, though.

The whole 'hey, abused women can be BAMFs' point is just flying over her head in a big way, too.

Man, I watched the two other long-comment ones and disregarded this entirely, because it was about Star Trek. Awesome.

It's Star Trek. I don't think there is any way to comprehend it without ignoring large parts of canon, sort of like trying to read anything from Marvel or DC.

Yeah, when TOS was apparently set in the 27th or the 23rd century depending on the episode in question, it gets messy pretty fast. More info on Memory Alpha, proving my point irrevocably lest anyone feel inclined to argue with my CANON KNOWLEDGE.

Shirtlessness is an excellent reason to watch a show! And I really don't mind if other people like it. Just...don't make me run every fic I wanna write against Enterprise canon, cause no. Not that I write Star Trek fic, even though I should.

I still loev Scott Bakula.

After reading the whole thing, this seems less about [info]stella_andrea disliking people disregarding canon, and more about butthurt because so many people dislike the TV series she likes.

Also, [info]alara_r is awesome.

I seriously hope she never ventures into the Warcraft fandom, where sometimes you just have to say, 'screw canon'.

It feels like [info]stella_andrea has a weirdly intense love for Enterprise, which is fine, just also odd. I think it's because I haven't found fans of nu!Trek on my flist who were not also first and foremost fans of at least two if not all the previous series, so the comment where she says she's pretty much basically seen nothing else but Enterprise surprised me.

I actually feel kind of sorry for her, but then I'm a DS9 fan. That said, I have someone on my f-list who had *no* knowledge of or exposure to Trek prior to the reboot (beyond basic awareness of it, that is), and overnight became a convert; she's spent most of the summer watching TOS episodes and picking my brain about the later series.

So, is this where we start referring to the "canon is the limit to acceptable applications of the imagination" people as "fandom fundamentalists"?

I particularly rolled my eyes at the comment where she went: "Everyone else hates me and I don't know why. *sobs*" Because politely disagreeing with your views on Star Trek canon (and in a couple of cases pointing out that you said an offensive thing about abuse victims) totally means they hate you personally!

Apropro to nothing, now I'm wondering if the two (Enterprise's depiction of the Orions and Galia's background) could be reconciled. (Either something changed with the Orions from Enterprise time to TOS/AOS time, or that the Orions have more than one faction. Come on, this is Trek, where every inconsistency can be turned into more patches and splices of canon.)

My wank senses were tingling as soon as I saw that post, and I know next to nothing about Trek. Especially since this whole Orion slave girl retcon just screams, "Whoops, original series did something a bit misogynist so let's fix this in a round-about stupid way!"

*sigh* I liked Enterprise. Really and truly, I did. But, I accept that most people thought it was crap. And, like large chunks of Voyager, most fans "Highlander 2" it out of their heads.

That was one incident I had really been trying to forget. *shakes her fist at the wanker* Damn you!
