This is what happens when people expect far too much of canon.
Over on [info]fanficrants, [info]stella_andrea has something to say. She posts a long rant about how Orion slave girls aren't actually slaves, citing Memory Alpha and the Enterprise series.

Unfortunately, not every one agrees (including me).

[info]gehayi has this to say:

I remember seeing that recently in Memory Alpha.

It astonished me, because it in no way conforms to the Trek canon that I know--that of TOS. And YES, the Orion slave girls are called just that in TOS canon. There is no hint in the 79 original shows that they were ever anything else.

I have never seen any of the books Memory Alpha refers to. I don't know what they say in detail. I do, however, smell a retcon.

Other people make reasonable arguments about the size of canon, canon contradictions, and the (to be fair, debatable) suckiness of Enterprise.

[info]stella_andrea responds with this ETA:

You know people? I give up. Really. I had no idea people disregarded canon at will. I thought that wasn't allowed because, you know, canon is canon! But whatever. I'll stick to my "official" canon and hope that maybe, someday, someone will decide to look at the official canon and use it in some new and interesting ways. That's all I wanted. Someone to write something canon and make it work. *sighs*

It's haaaard out here for an Enterprise fan, peeps.

Dare I ask why?

(I care more about leaving KOTOR intact than her stuff, honestly. I can't get into the Mandoclone stuff, but touch Clan Ordo and I cut you!)

Partially because she wrote the Mandalorians as God-Sues and hates all Jedi except the ones she created (and boy, does it show), but also because of her behavior towards fans. Referring to anyone who doesn't like your work for whatever reason, even if they're polite about it or have never said anything to you personally, as a "talifan" doesn't score any points with me.

It gets better- she doesn't hate Jedi, because Jedi are fictional, silly! No, she has no problem with them. On the other hand, if you think the Jedi are awesome, she does hate you.

Honestly, I wanted to scream when I read that. Traviss fails at understanding how humans interact with fiction for life.

Further details are in my paper, "Is Quasi-Fear the Path to the Quasi-Dark Side?" covering the topic of fear in fiction. Meanwhile, I will be bashing Traviss in the head with my philosophy textbooks.

One of the many reasons I was happy to hear she quit over these changes.

I mean I'm not happy about changes to canon even when I like the final product (See the Darth Bane novels which were decent but contradicted the original versions a great deal) but I accepted long ago that Star Wars canon would always be a mess.

Yep, she basically threw up her hands and said she'd finish her next two Imp commando books and then she was done with star wars cause she'd have to rewrite all her books to fit new canon.

As a result her Boba Fett Book is officially cancelled.

The Reaction tended to go three ways.

Those who enjoyed her work and were sad.

Those who loved seeing her get a taste of her own medicine.

And those who just hate canon contradictions and regardless of how they felt about Traviss were annoyed at the TV series contradicting the EU again.

I personally was shocked when I came online after a few days off to find a huge thread about her quitting on a Star Wars forum.

Count me firmly in the second camp on that one. I actually made a little noise of schadenfreudy glee.
