Anti war wankage at Live Journal
When you come across as being pro-Bush in a community that clearly shows disapproval of his policy, you are clearly asking for trouble.

Coupled with gross generalisations such as "In the long run, U.S. presence will make peace! (in Iraq)" and incredibly silly proclamations that "The media biases their reports so scew the news so that it looks like the situation in Iraq is dire, but, as mentioned before, it's not." this is the perfect display of ignorance as well as arrogance. Definitely not a good combination in my books.

http://www.livejournal.com/community/anti_war/54097.html?view=85585#t85585

Enjoy.

Heh, actually, both of you sound very wanky. The problem with Iraq war wank -- as with so many wanks -- is that neither side seems willing to concede that the other side has valid points. Both sides accuse the other of being naive (completely missing the irony of this), and the perpetual resorting to logical fallacies -- petitio principii, argumentum ad verecundiam, post hoc ergo propter hoc, ad hominem, argumentum ad misercordiam, prejudicial language (appeal to morality), premature generalizations, et cetara, just to name a few that I saw in just this community entry alone -- to make points that circle endlessly, never coming to a verifiable conclusion.

Ah, Iraq war and Bush-wank...makes the abortion debates look reasonable and friendly.

Fair enough. In any case, the kid's over-generalisation and arrogance drove me up the wall*shrug* (mimicks: You should take up International Relations... seriously! You'll see what a fine and dandy country America really is. etc etc etc)

Besides,i don't think the argument should be about "coming to a conclusion" as you put it.No one could given the complexity of the problem because to say that would be to undermine the severity of the problems at hand. Just my 2c.

Still, I think anyone who goes all out to say that "America will make things better" should shoot themselves in the head. I've heard too much of that shit of late and seen too much crap that was done to Iraq to even dream that there is any "validity" in that claim.

Oh dear. Now you've gotten wankier than that OP could possibly manage. Is there a jurisimprudence law regarding advocating suicide for people who hold a particular belief? Especially when the rationalization revolves around the advocator's f33r5um speshul_prognostication powerz?

Even if there isn't there should be. :) Especially since recent circumstances clearly indicates that the particular belief is absolutely "ludacris".

Good thing most people from WWII are dead then...

If you or anyone else uses the phrase "If it wasn't for us you'd all be speaking German" I will enroll in an American-sponsored German-language course. :)

Damn. Because making someone learn a foreign language is always fun, but not if I have to pay for it. If I gotta spend money, I'm learning it myself, dammit.

You know, I recently discovered a really FUN way to learn new languages: one of the London bus tours doesn't have a tour guide, it has a socket jack for headphones, with about eight choices of language in it. Learn London hisory and Japanese lanuage AT THE SAME TIME! Pure brilliance.

Our busses have notices posted in a bunch of languages, but it's mostly just boring stuff. If, however, I ever go to Japan, Korea, Russia, or any one of a number of Spanish-speaking countries, I'll know when I'm not allowed to smoke, have food or drink, or annoy the driver.

It sounds so much easier than it actually is. I just usually stand around and look stupid until someone tells me what to do, which is more effective than one might think.

Oh hell no I wouldn't say that. Given that dictator ships rely heavily on the charisma of the man in charge, unless Hitler had hand picked and groomed for years someone to take over when he was gone it all could have fallen apart soon after Hitler’s death anyways. /history wank off

I was actually referring to old news reels I remember from History class. One propaganda film in particular were the phrase 'America will make it better' was actually used.

America isn't the ultimate good nor the ultimate evil. Plus we suck at having colonies. We think we want them, we try to get them, but lets face it Brittan was much better at the sort of thing.

Err...what was the topic again?

I dunno. Let's talk about history some more, that's always fun. WWII Propaganda is funky stuff - I always loved the whole "coughs and sneezes spread diseases" and "loose lips sink ships" ones myself.

[England at the time going ga-ga for rhyming adverts, apparently, because we used to have posters for the Tube of "Billy Brown of London Town". People used rhyming graffiti to make fun of it]

When I was a kid, my mother would get up early in the morning to get me off to school. She always wound up watching whatever was on the local station's public access program.

I distinctly remember one morning was a panel of professors discussing the homoerotic themes in Nazi Germany propaganda films from the 30s. Complete with shots from said films, of stunningly handsome young men jogging naked, showering, etc.

Yeah, because we went to war with Germany out of pure, unadulterated altruism and concern for our fellow man. It had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that they were allied with Japan, who happened to be the first foreign country to attack America on their own soil in over a century.
