9:25 pm - A Reminder and a Note
|

|
Our first House Quidditch match is tomorrow at two o'clock in the afternoon. Ravenclaw are playing Hufflepuff. Madam Hooch tells me that it promises to be a good match, and we would be happy for any of you to attend.
One other note: You all will have seen, by now, the news that a Mr. Aubrey Michaels has been arrested. He was the man responsible for leading the attack on Hogsmeade this past Spring. If any of you have questions regarding the situation, or are called upon to speak to any officials of the court and need someone to talk to, please do not hesitate to stop by my office or send an owl. I will be glad, as always, to find you the help you require, if I cannot offer it myself.

Death Eater Behind Hogsmeade Attack Caught by Lionel Line
Late this morning, Aurors working abroad in Switzerland arrested Mr. Aubrey Michaels, the Death Eater believed to be behind the attack on Hogsmeade a few months ago. Several were killed in the attack, and several more injured. In addition, as a result of the attack the people of Hogsmeade sustained significant property damage to residences and businesses.
While seemingly little progress has been made in recent weeks in the capture of the remaining followers of the Dark Lord, destroyed three months ago now by Harry Potter, a few arrests have been made. And with the arrest of Michaels, one of the worst events of the recent struggles may yet be addressed.
While a trial and a possible conviction for Michaels cannot fully recompense the people of Hogsmeade, perhaps it can serve to comfort them in some way. As a resident commented, "The attack here was horrible. It really drove home what other people have been faced all along. You read the reports, and you think it's awful, but you don't really know, do you, until it happens to you. But we pulled through it, and whether anything comes of this arrest or not, we're better for it. At least that's how I see it. But it's a hard thing, and people lost loved ones. And I hope maybe they'll get some of their own back, if they can see this Death Eater convicted for what he's done."
The mayor of Hogsmeade and the town council declined to comment at this time. Michaels is scheduled to go to trial in two weeks. He will await his court date in Azkaban prison.

Wolfsbane Distribution Continues in Hogsmeade by Warren Cheswick
In a follow-up to an earlier report, the Daily Prophet returned to Hogsmeade to visit the home of Mr. Mundungus Fletcher and Professor Prudence Vector, the couple to whose door was nailed, a few weeks ago, the pelt of a Werewolf.
Fletcher and Vector work with Remus Lupin to distribute the Wolfsbane potion to the Werewolves around Hogsmeade. Not only does Fletcher help to brew the potion, but both of them have helped, on occasion, with the distribution itself. Moreover, the distribution currently takes place out of the home that they own.
Though the town of Hogsmeade did look into the appearance of the pelt, the investigation has turned up nothing. The distribution continues, however, and there has been, to date, no newer indications of trouble.
When asked if they had received or seen any other sign that the distribution is not welcome in the town of Hogsmeade, Fletcher replied, "The people of Hogsmeade generally have made us feel very welcome in the short time we've lived here. We hadn't had any other messages, no. That was why it came as such a terrible shock to us both, it came quite out of the blue. At the meeting earlier this year it was clear that some people didn't like the service, but I had thought that everyone understood the very logical reasons for having the service. Looks like we gave at least one person credit for too much intelligence."
While the mayor of Hogsmeade has insisted on downplaying the violent nature of this occurrence--even if that violence was sight unseen--Fletcher answers the question as to whether or not this was a threat in the affirmative. "Well, yes, obviously it was a threat. And yes, I've been taking extra precautions--anyone else who tries it is likely to be in for a surprise or two." When asked, though, whether he thought there was anything that should have been done, by way of the investigation, that wasn't, he said that they weren't sure what else could have been done.
While the house is still serving as the point of distribution for the potion, the couple has moved to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where Professor Vector teaches Arithmancy. When asked if the event had any bearing on their decision, Vector replied, "Of course not. Don't be silly." Fletcher added that it was solely a question of Vector's availability and efficacy as a teacher, and that the house would be rented, not sold, and, in the meantime, that it would remain at the disposal of the Wolfsbane distribution and all who help with it. If the distribution changes its location, they will make certain that the new location is announced.
Fletcher adds, "We both believe it's important that all werewolves who want the potion can have access to it. It's not just that we're helping out our friends, though of course we are, we do believe it's an important service for both werewolves who need it and for the rest of the wizarding and Muggle communities. Werewolf attack would injure both the person attacked and the werewolf themselves--it's important to protect everyone. Professor Vector and I are both furious that this necessary service should be put at risk by the actions of what was clearly an ignorant and stupid person."

Photographer Fired from Witch Weekly by Warren Cheswick
Witch Weekly has recently fired one of their photographers, a Mr. Graham Hornswallow, apparently for his work on an article concerning Mr. Neville Longbottom, heir to the Longbottom estate, and Miss Virginia Weasley, daughter of Mr. Arthur Weasley, who heads up the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts department at the Ministry of Magic.
While it is unclear exactly why Hornswallow was fired--he, and all representatives from Witch Weekly, refuse to answer questions or make any statement to the press--this reporter has learned from an anonymous source that Hornswallow was seen while taking a photograph looking in through the windows at Longbottom's Hogsmeade residence, and that Mrs. Joanna Longbottom, the matriarch of the Longbottom family, paid a visit to the Witch Weekly offices shortly after the story ran.
A resident of Hogsmeade says, "We've had quite a few photographs taken around here in recent months. That'll happen, of course, when Harry Potter lives nearby. Those Werewolf stories add to it, I expect. And we don't mind much, at least most of us don't. You never see the photographers around, and when you do, or see the reporters, they're polite, and they sit down for a pint--sometimes even offer to buy you one, if you'll chat with them a bit. But I can't say as I approve of them looking in windows and all. I wouldn't like it if it were me, and I can tell you that for a certain fact."
The town of Hogsmeade gave no official statement on the situation, and this reporter has been given no confirmation of the reasons for Hornswallow's dismissal.

Our first client! I thought I would make this one public because I felt like sharing the good news with everyone.
Neville and I have our first client! On the chance we've yet to mention it, we've been working on setting up a Herbology research outsourcing firm. We've been sending out letters like mad, and we've finally got a positive reply. We were contacted by a witch - Sally Brawne - who runs a small apothecary in Suffolk. She wants us to work on a variant of dittany (Origanum dictamnus) in order to improve her painkilling potions. I'll be apparating out to meet with her tomorrow.
Anyhow, very much excited!

He's here! Our James is here!
Hermione went into labour early this morning, and now he's here, after a little over seven hours! He's healthy, and everything is fine, and Hermione's really, really tired, but she's okay too. She's feeding him now, and I think she's going to rest some after that, but if anyone wants to stop by and say hello later today, you're welcome. We're at home, because we decided it would be more comfortable and relaxing than going to the hospital.
Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know the good news. I'm going to go and stare at my son some more and let it sink in that he really is finally here. :)

9:32 pm - a decision made
|

|
It's a bit early since we won't know what gender our baby is for a while yet, but Severus and I have been discussing possible names nonetheless, and we've decided on what we'll name our firstborn. If it's a boy, we will name him Albus Jeovany; if it's a girl, her name will be Poppy Hadrienne.
Given that neither of us are inclined to honour anyone in our birth families, we wanted to name our children after the two people who have served as surrogate parent figures to each of us, respectively. It was a surprisingly easy decision to make, once we started talking about it, and we're both quite happy with the two choices.

9:07 pm - Reminder of Staff Meeting Tomorrow
|

|
For those of you on staff, a reminder that our first official staff meeting of the term will be held tomorrow at three o'clock in the staff room.
Attendance is, as usual, expected, though if you are unable to attend (if, for example, your wife goes into labor around two o'clock), let Minerva know, or myself, and we can make arrangements to meet with you at some other time. If you have anything that you would like to see added to the agenda, please let Minerva know by tomorrow morning if at all possible, and she will make certain there is time to address all concerns and still be home in time for tea.
I have also sent out written reminders, but I want to begin to get into the practice of posting the school news and reminders here at the group journal again, and I thought this was as good a place to start as any.

Eyes About Town
Our article in last week's issue concerning the Longbottom heir and his apparent liason with muggle-born Justin Finch-Fletchley and Ginny Weasley, the daughter of high-ranking Ministry official Arthur Weasley, has picked up a new wrinkle. The Longbottom matriarch, JoAnna Longbottom herself, was seen having lunch with none other than Mr Arthur Weasley. Eyewitnesses said they seemed to be having quite a heated discussion.

British teams Lose in Round Seven of European Cup by Byron Matheson Sunday Prophet
Both Puddlemere United and the Wimbourne Wasps went down in defeat last night, to the Leuven Lightnings and Grodzisk Goblins, respectively.
Puddlemere's play has been inconsistent throughout the tournament, losing almost as many as they've won. Puddlemere's Keeper, Captain and Acting Coach, Oliver Wood, allowed too many goals to pass by him. Some watchers have wondered if the responsibility of wearing three hats is too much for him. Former Puddlemere Seeker and Captain, Keith MacDonald, said, "Wood was so busy worrying about what the rest of the team was doing, he was oblivious to those 17 goals. It's obvious he needs to be replaced." Wood could not be reached for comment.
Puddlemere's Chasers made 13 goals, but 22 more attempts were kept away by the deft maneuverings of Leuven's Keeper. Puddlemere's Seeker, Martin Galbraith, was unable to get to the Snitch in time due to a Leuven Beater attack. Puddlemere is now in fourth, behind Grodzisk, the Dacia Dragons, and Leuven. Puddlemere faces first-ranked Grodzisk next week.
Grodzisk's defeat of Wimbourne yesterday helped put them ahead of Dacia in the standings....

Longbottom Heir in Illicit Affair? by Honoria Glossop
It appears that Neville Longbottom, heir to the Longbottom family fortune, has not spent all of his time since leaving his employ at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry helping Remus Lupin in his quest for Werewolf rights. In between donating significant amounts of his inheritance to Lupin's cause and helping to distribute the Wolfsbane potion each month at Lupin's base of operations in Hogsmeade, Longbottom has apparently found himself a girlfriend.
And a boyfriend.
Sources close to Longbottom, and the photos below, reveal that not only is he involved with a Muggle-born wizard named Justin Finch-Fletchley, into whose house the other two have moved, but also Miss Ginny Weasley, whose father, Mr. Arthur Weasley, and brother, Mr. Percival Weasley, work at the Ministry of Magic.
When asked about the relationship between the three young people, Nanny Ogg, a long-time resident of Hogsmeade who is held in great esteem by those who live there, had this to say: "We are a small, peaceful community, or we try to be. It is bad enough that we are now known as 'that Werewolf town,' but to think that there is, quite possibly, such a den if iniquity in our midst? Well, if it's true, then I just don't know what to say."
Indeed. A high-ranking Ministry official's daughter involved with not one, but two men together? The heir to an important wizarding family's estate embroiled in a menage-a-trois? All I can say is that it looks to be the summer of free love in Hogsmeade this year.
[The article includes two photos: one of Neville and Ginny in Hogsmeade together, looking in a shop window, and another of the three of them sitting on their sofa together, with Neville and Justin kissing as Ginny nuzzles Neville's shoulder]

I had thought to mention this before, but as Puddlemere have won yet another match, I will take the opportunity to mention it now.
Mr. Wood, I have been thoroughly enjoying the tournament, and I am very pleased indeed to see Puddlemere doing so brilliantly. Third in the standings, by this morning's paper! Congratulations, and I believe I can safely say that we are all very proud of you for your accomplishments this season.
Sadly, I have been unable to attend a match, as yet, but I hope to make it to the finals--especially if Puddlemere are playing. If not, perhaps I may find time to actually leave the school in the coming term and view one of the games in the fall. I trust, however, that the more direct cheering is being dutifully taken care of by others, even if mine is only for the benefit of my wireless.

Auror in death shock by Lionel Line
The international Wizarding community was rocked last night with the news that the Moldovian Minister of Magic, Lenin Popovski, had been assassinated.
That news proved false.
What did happen is that it seems that Professor Popovski had been identified by the British Auror division as a follower of Lord Voldemort. A hand-picked squad of Aurors were sent out to arrest him and some of his associates. While they were trying to bring their suspects back to Britiain, there was what the Ministry of Magic describe as 'a scuffle', and in the confusion it seems that one of the Aurors, Gregory Hill, cast the Killing Curse on Professor Popovski.
According to Ministry sources last night, Mr Hill is currently being held in custody awaiting a hearing before the Wizengamot, as are the other suspects. Mr Hill is accused of murder; it is not known what the charges are against the suspected Death Eaters.
When asked Mr Hill's chances, a Ministry spokeswitch said, "Of course we don't know what's going to happen. If we knew that, what would be the point of a trial." Nor would she comment on what connection Lord Voldemort had had with Moldovia, or how many Death Eaters remain at large.

[found near the front of the paper, but not on the front page]
The Werewolf Situation in Hogsmeade By Warren Cheswick Staff Reporter
Since the appearance of a Werewolf pelt, nailed to the door of a house in their town last Saturday, the residents of Hogsmeade have been more concerned than ever about the growing presence of Werewolves in their town. In addition to the pack that lives in the forest nearby, the efforts of Remus Lupin to begin a Distribution Center for the Wolfsbane potion-—the potion that ensures a Werewolf will retain his or her right mind even as he or she takes the form of a wolf--has brought other Werewolves into town for the week preceding the full moon.
In a town meeting a few months ago, the Mayor of Hogsmeade, Mr. Reginald Dwight, along with the Town Council, made it clear that Lupin and the others had every right to distribute the Wolfsbane out of a private residence in town. Since then, Dwight and the council have worked to address the concerns of the townspeople and Werewolves alike, hoping to find a diplomatic solution to the problem.
"It is not within our rights to tell people what they can and cannot do in the privacy of their own home," Dwight said. "However, bringing these Werewolves in once a month has become a public issue. Some of them are staying in our public house, and there is the question of whether they will be welcome in businesses, or even on the street. We have not had any incidents as of yet, but some people are scared. And fear can breed violence--or at least trouble. So we're doing our best to keep everyone calm, listen to what they have to say, and make sure things go smoothly."
The pelt on the door belies Dwight's claim that there has yet to be an incident, surely, and there is still no word on who was behind the display--though Dwight was quick to assure this reporter that the investigation still continues.
Clearly not everyone is satisfied with his approach to the problem. Nanny Ogg, a long-time resident of Hogsmeade and a vocal presence in town, claimed, "Diplomacy is all well and good, of course, but I mean, really! The thought of bringing in more and more of these beasts every month--we'll be overrun! Not to mention, we're already known as 'that Werewolf town,' I'm sure. This was a nice, quiet place before Lupin and his kind showed up. I have no problem with them, understand, but they should keep to their own. And I'm not the only one to think so, either, I can assure you."
When asked about the town's reactions to his Distribution Project, Lupin said, "I am grateful for the support many people have shown for the project; their willingness to help has made it move forward that much more smoothly and quickly. Although I understand the concerns some people have about Werewolves coming from out of town, there have been no unpleasant incidents caused by any of the Werewolves, local or not, and as important as the potion is to those coming to receive it, I don't anticipate any problems in future. Nor do I intend to slow down, much less stop, moving ahead with my plans for the project and its expansion, despite Warren's murder and the threat the hunter still poses to the rest of us while he remains at large."
Lupin aims to broaden distribution gradually, eventually starting distribution points in other towns. In the meantime, supporters of the project research the Wolfsbane, making it possible to store and transport it more readily, and, hopefully, future developments are to come. Lupin is beginning the process of turning the Werewolf Project into a non-profit organization (it is unclear how this may affect the question of activity on private property), and works to bring more Werewolves into the already existing Distribution Center.
Finally, the advantages--Werewolves maintaining their human mind at the time of transformation, resulting in greater safety for all--do not outweigh other concerns for some residents. Still, the work continues, and, on either side of the question, the people of Hogsmeade watch carefully Lupin's progress.
