The "I was only doing research" Law of Trollery
Any troll who excuses their trolling by saying that it was 'just research' loses, not only their agrument, but at life as well. Said troll should be forced to work as an under-paid researcher's assistant for a period of time to be detrimined by the target of their trolling.

Hmmmm. Internet trolling is a legitimate area of sociological study, and there might be times that a sociologist might want to perform controlled expirements. But does "I'm doing it for science" justify being an asshole anymore than "I'm doing it for kicks"?

Of course, probably 99.99% of anyone who makes a claim like that is lying.

I figure that anyone really doing that kind of research probably is already/has done a stint as some kind of research assistant, and the experience won't hurt them.

The rest deserve the pain.

While completing my Masters, I wrote a lengthy-as-fuck research paper on "performing" being female on a male-dominated messageboard community, focusing on how most posters assume "female" posters are really male, and what it felt like to be "real" woman in those situations. While I ended up choosing *not* to make posts in order to study the responses (which is trolling of a sort, really) I was much tempted.

But I'd like a job as a research assistant, so the punishment really doesn't really scare me. ;)

I am a research assistant.

I have only tried to remove my own eye with a spoon once, but I'm sure more times will come.

If you don't have any other suggestions for people to "honor" by naming this law after them, may I suggest calling it Cynical Otter's Law?
