The "Why Do You Make the Baby Roland Cry?" Doctrine:
Let it be resolved that:

Anyone referring to Barthes -- or the concept of the "death of the author" in particular -- in defense of shipwankery shall be locked in a small room with no less than one dozen rabid literature majors.

Revision #1: Let the above text be amended so as to include Comparative Literature and/or Philosophy majors under the category of "literature majors" above, if it is also the case that said Philosophy majors have sufficient background in Critical Theory.

Revision #2: "Literature major" is to be replaced with "any individual with an academic background encompassing familiarity with the work of Barthes, including, but not limited to, persons majoring in or having majored in Literature, Comparative Literature, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, Film and Visual Culture, Women's Studies, LGBT Studies, English and/or related fields.

(We should also probably develop a corollary or sentencing enhancement in honor of Ishtar79...any suggestions?)

Can we include Comp Lit and Philosophy majors, too? Because those people really know how to bring the brain-frying critspeak.

Of course! I think CompLit could fall under "literature" more generally...but I can't object to the inclusion of both of my own majors.

Well, the philosophy part might be going minor. Partly because I'm really more interested in the literature, and partly because I can't stand philosophy majors.

I'll cosign that. (I had a bad experience with a Philosophy major my sophomore year.)

Try as I might, I can't find a single reference to shipping in that post.
