Offred's Law
Inspired by too many wanks to count, this law states:

1) That, in real life, other people will frequently say things, write things, or propose state/national legislation with which you disagree. This is a basic side-effect of living in a democracy.

2) That, despite the above fact, the U.S./Canada/Europe/Your Home Nation is NEVER on the verge of becoming just like your favorite dystopian novel from high school.

3) That this law applies to everyone, from anarcho-feminists to fundamentalist Christians (for whom the law may alternately be known as "LaHaye's Rule" and will contain the addendum that any person speculated to be the Antichrist is automatically NOT the Antichrist).

4) That the only way to exempt yourself from Offred's Law is if the country you are referring to has experienced a military coup, dictatorship, totalitarian rule or a combination thereof within the last 50 years.
4a) Choosing to refer to a popularly elected leader you don't like as a "dictator" or "facist" does not count as a reason to exempt yourself.

5) That any person found to be in violation of this law shall be automatically deported from the westernized democracy they currently reside in and forced to take up residence in a country that actually is facist or totalitarian.

*applauds*

There's probably a version of this for every religion, too. Kemetics have a nasty habit of referring to other Kemetics that they dislike as "Apep" (the Egyptian serpent of chaos and uncreation).

Sadly, I saw no Mamoripantsu. There was only one Eyeshield 21-themed pantsu icon, and it was the Hiruma one.

There were, however, Shigurepantsu. *Multiple* Shigurepantsu.

I think that would empty out half the colleges in the country. And leave a lot of openings on the faculties at the rest. So hey, I'm all for it! ;)

This is a basic side-effect of living in a democracy.

Yup. And as long as you're allowed to point and mock when they say something egregiously stupid, no one's civil rights are in danger.

And completely decimate the Southern Baptist Convention. It's really a fascinating little proposition, huh? :)

Well, given that the last blanket illiteracy accusation came from Chancery (author of the hit cult novel DANNY!) I'd say the "totally off-base" part isn't all that unexpected, really.

GODDAMN! THANK YOU! I thought I was making polite conversation with someone on the bus and this bitch just wound up yelling in her Outdoor Voice about how Bush is destroying the country, America is going into the ground, it's all ending in Hell, etc!

"Well, *cites examples of the pendulum theory, past presidential fuck-ups, and checks and balances*"
"...UH, WELL, YEAH, BUT, Y'KNOW I THINK-"

Once she got into her 'original' Harry Potter theories about how Harry is a horcrux and Dumbledore's death was planned, I just got off at the next stop and walked the rest of the way to the train. O.o

And she kept making Eyes at me whenever I was at the bus stop at the same time as her. Took her a few months to stop.

She was another student at my school and she looked sane. O.o She got into it after she railed about Bush, Destroyer of Worlds and just cited every single theory that everyone thought of after the book's release. Another student started talking to her about it, also in an Outdoor Voice. Everyone is staring daggers at them and I haul ass as soon as the bus stops.

This is frighteningly close to a conversation I had with a perfectly normal looking woman of a certain age (about mine, in fact) at the grocery checkout line, which took a sharp right into some cloud cuckoo land where the Washington State Department of Transportation was suddenly an agent of the Antichrist, and /or the International Communist Conspiracy, or maybe it was the Borg, anyway some huge and amoral and UNCHRISTIAN assemblage working for world domination by using traffic congestion to force everyone out of their private cars and on to the bus .

I'd blame the woman ahead of us at the checkout who had two shopping carts full of canned goods and was buying everything with coupons, except I'm pretty sure she was buying for the food bank, and was therefore one of the good guys.

At least, it wasn't the bus driver. I had a bus driver who for ten years straight has entertained the people on the bus with stories about how our premier is just short of Mussolini.

I didn't even known provincial politics had the *opportunity* to do fascist things.

(Sings, ascending in A major.) The major chords are happy!

(Descending, in A minor.) The minor chords are sad!

(Ascending, in A major, ending modally on a natural G.) The seventh chords are saucy!

(Ascending, chromatically, from G to B.) And the ninth chords sorta bland!

(Sighs.) It's not the same.
