The 'Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Wankery' Prescription.
If, in a wank, a poster defends his or her wanky, asshatish, and/or generally illogical and ineffective debating techniques by saying 'I'm just like [Character X] in [Fandom]*,' he or she automatically loses the argument and will be forced to suffer fools while listening to happy hardcore.

* See, for example, Gregory House in House, MD and Severus Snape in Harry Potter; see also Brian Kinney from Queer as Folk (US).

Comparisons to David Sedaris similarly render a poster's argument null and void, with the added punishment of being forced to suffer fools while working as an elf at Macy's.

You know, in real life, would any of us actually *like* Greg House anyway? Because he's amusing, but if I actually had to deal with him I'd hate his snarky guts.

Word. Same with Snape. I freakin' love him as a character - but if he were a real person, I'd probably have to suppress the urge to smack him every time he was in the same room. : P

Also, Brian Kinney. These dudes are assholes, so like, being like them would in no way be endearing.

Basil Fawlty as well. I adore him, but I'd lose my mind if I stayed in a hotel managed by him.

Diving into the classics, I'd have to mention Sherlock Holmes, the original House, drug addiction and all Mound of the Hound of the Baskervilles.

Exactly.

Watching him on TV is fun, but I'm not sure I'd want him as my doctor.

Same with Raistlin from the 'Dragonlace' novels. Fun to read about, but I don't think I'd want him over for dinner.

Why wouldn't you want someone that competent and good in his field to treat you as a doctor if you have life-threatening disease?

To clarify, I would want House if I had a dangerous illness, but I wouldn't want to deal with him for something minor like a sprained ankle, because he has a tendency to be rude and to stick his nose where it doesn't belong.

There are a lot of fictional people who I think are awesome but would hate in real life. That said, there have been quite a few times where I think I'd prefer House to my doctors.

I actually had that conversation with my mom when I took her into Urgent Care the other day and she had to deal with an idiot Physician's Assistant (normally I like PAs because they listen more, but this one . . . well, it'd take too long to explain and isn't really relevant). As we were walking out of there and she was starting to feel better, I asked "don't you wish House worked there?".

We're both in this strange state that is half anticipation and half dread for the season finale. Can't wait to see what happens, but then there's no more new House until September.

Actually, thanks to baseball, we may start seeing new episodes in mid to late August. That would mean fewer new episodes in January (as they'll probably hold most of the new eps in 2007 for sweeps), but we may get an early start to the season. And Fox and USA are both going to be re-running the second season (I know for sure that USA is -- Acceptance is airing June 9th), then the DVDs should be out over the summer in anticipation of the third season, so there should be plenty of House to go around for awhile.

Hey, does anyone remember that one Harmonian teacher who only gave As to H/Hr supporters? I thought I heard at one point that he referred to himself as "Snape with a smile." So he was a nice asshole, or something. And it just further brings he teaching skills into question.

Oh, I remember that. I wonder what would happen if that teacher taught Jane Austen: "Nice analysis of Elizabeth Bennett, but you neglected to mention the modern-day parallels to Harry/Hermione in the Harry Potter. C-."

One would think that the kids comparing grades would have found a pattern to something like that. And the fact that he brags about crap like that on the internets, hopefully he'll get busted for it one day.

[info]lightnote_blend said it best: it's not a fandom until it's been crossed with Harry Potter.

(I really want to write a fic in which HP is treated by House now and mistakes Chase for Draco Malfoy, leading to a seizure. Cameron can be wannabe!Hermione, Wilson a sort of Oliver Wood-ish sports fan, and Foreman Shacklebolt: the voice of reason.)

I wrote a lazy-ass fic where Chase was high and mistook House for Snape, once.

I saw a neat little fic once where Snape was House's patient and insisted he was a wizard. Not the best fic in the entire universe, but I thought it was sort of cool and definitely above average for the House fandom. I know I have the link somewhere.

*one quick google later*

I think a provision should be made to this rule regarding people who use Hogwarts houses as defense against wankery. E.g. "Well, I'm a Gryffindor so nyah!"

I'm pretty sure all self-comparisons to David Sedaris are null and void, though I'd be willing to make a possible exception for Augusten Burroughs.

Thank you Jeebus. Because as much as you think you're being cute or darling by comparing me to House, in real life, I would probably punch him in the face. A lot. I think he's cool as long as he's very, very far away from me. You know who's like House? House is like House. Everyone else just shut it.

Corollary: Anyone who claims to be "just like [Snarky Character X]" is, in reality, about as clever as soggy toilet paper, and would be eaten by Snarky Character X for breakfast after one biting insult.
