The Fallacy Of Contradictory Qualifiers

Inspired by this comment...

The Fallacy of Contradictory Qualifiers

  • When the word "but" is added to a self-describing statement, (examples:  I'm not racist, BUT... or I'm not a homophobe, BUT... or I believe in free speech, BUT... or I'm not writing a Mary-Sue, BUT...) it immediately serves to reverse intended meaning of that statement.
  • Thus, you are not what you say your are, or you are what you claim you aren't.

(Useful law to invoke when shattering self-delusions.)

This sort of thing is so rampant that at one point, I was going to write an "I'm not a ______, but..." non-sequitur generator. As in:

"I'm not homophobic, but I think Bush's foreign policy is shit."

"I'm not racist or anything, but I just don't like those flimsy plastic bags at the supermarket."

"I'm not sexist, but I think your cat might have fleas."

etc.

Oh, if you know how to code that, it would be great!

Hahahahaha. Sounds like all those times people assume something is related when it isn't and freak out.

I'm just stunned it took this long for an official law...

True, it did seem very obvious--until someone said that it hadn't, and I said with shock--"Why the hell not?!"

And here we are.

Does this fallacy even apply to the classic "doctor" statement or similar such statements? (e.g. "I'm not a lawyer, but I play one on the internets.")

I'm not on topic, BUT I bought exactly the same type of headband (I don't know what to call it) when I went to a Ren Faire a few weeks ago.

That was actually a borrowed wreath from a girlymate on my very first trip to faire last year. The entire costume was borrowed, until I bought my own (would've done like my friends and made one, but I can't sew worth crap.)

Ever been to the Maryland Renaissance Festival? Teh fabulous. That's where that pic was taken.

At the risk of doing that "in the good old days" thing, the MD Faire kinda sucks now that tourists have discovered it by the busloads. All the booths are mobbed, they ask for a doctor note if you tell them you need to drop a disabled person near the front gate, the price is holyHELLhigherthanitusedtobe, and the merchants are all cranky.

Thank you, this is way overdue. Yesterday I was headdesking after trying to argue with people on a conservative blog about Why Calling People Racial Slurs is Racist.
