Peachespig's Rule of Entitlement
The first entry in a series that sucked was always the first one after you, whoever you are, got way too emotionally invested in an unreasonable outcome. Always.

Created by peachespig, modified and reposted with permission.

EDIT: Velvet_mace rephrased it better than I did.

Canon starts getting sucky the installment after fans get way too emotionally invested in an unreasonable outcome.

Yeeahhh. Tell that to people who used to read Laurell K. Hamilton.

I'm always afraid to read the first ones again just in case I was wrong and the black-hole-like suck was always there.

I'm not having a lot of luck replacing her, either. There are a lot of female-lead urban fantasy/horror-esque books out there right now, but in addition to the editors being inspired to seek out more format like that, they also seem to been inspired to seek out more books where you kind of want to shake the heroine until her teeth rattle. *gives a sulkly glare at the Rachel Morgan series and scrawls "Also, just do the damn lesbian sex" on her report card*

The first one is actually pretty entertaining. It's not great literature by any means, but it's relatively smart and enjoyable. Just pretend that the first couple books were all that were.

LKH: like Anne Rice, in a way.

I tend to avoid the 'first ones' because it just reminds me of how bad things get.

At least with LKH, the freaky sex happens with the over eighteen year olds.

Avoid Piers Anthony.

How did Piers go from 'LOL Centaurs don't freak out over boobies' to 'All guys go nuts over panties'? And..and...much much worse stuff. Much.
