Am I totally nuts, or is the comparison there about the methods of the Civil Rights movement? Because it's valid to talk about civil disobedience, and valid to mention one of the greatest modern successes of the tactic when you do.

In this case, however little I agree with the purpose of the post, I don't think the use of the Civil Rights movement is flawed. A direct comparison to say "this is just like the Civil Rights movement" is bad. Saying, this is like the Civil Rights movement, but on a much lesser scale should be okay, though. And saying, the tactics of the Civil Rights movement can be applied to a situation shouldn't result in an automatic loss ever.

At the risk of wanking in the house, I'd be more willing to agree with you if the context of the conversation was not Harry Potter fans wanking about their Dog-given right to post dumb shit on the Internet. The Civil Rights Movement was about addressing the legacy of slavery so that an entire race of people would no longer be treated like second class citizens in our own country.

This is fandom showing its ~~ass~~ privilege again, and it's patently offensive to me.
