Internet Lawyering
I bring forth to you a law that is long overdue- if someone has already written a law like this, please, let me know and I will remove this one. As it is, I have not seen anything addressing this issue.

The Theory of Internet Lawyering

Any wanker or wanka who asserts knowledge of the legal system and proceeds to try and tell others what the law is to the point of showing that they actually have no real knowledge of the law shall be beaten with a set of first year law school books.

Included among the books will be these standard titles-
Torts
Contracts
Criminal Law
Civil Procedure
Constitutional Law
Criminal Procedure

Beatings will continue until the offender understands that they are not a lawyer.

I will happily loan out my six-volume set of IP casebooks as necessary.

I feared no one would get that. ;) Perhaps it will work via osmosis, as sweet reason seems to utterly fail.

I sold back most of mine finally when I realized I wouldn't have time to re-read any of them in preparation for taking the state bar exam. However, I still have my Rules of Evidence book and my Torts book hanging around and that would be more than enough to cause death.

Prosser's Torts- now a deadly weapon!

Heh. I have Epstein's.

Could be worse. Friends of mine had Epstein. He was a visiting prof here, and has just become a poached prof--no boiling oil, more's the pity--but according to them, first-year Torts, not his strong suit.

And he took the wrong side on Hamidi anyway.

Damnit, I sold all of my law school books back years ago. Our office does have bookcases full of P.2d/P.3ds though. Maybe we could just pull a case over on them?

Ooo, we could use this one for when they not only pretend to be lawyers but also manage to quote law from the wrong subject area in support of their argument.

What we really need is an Internet Lawyers' Guild, so we can hit them with Unauthorized Practice of Internet Law.

What happens when a real lawyer wanders into an unmoderated community and threatens to sue everyone so he can win a flame war?

In all seriousness, though, has anyone ever caught an actual attorney doing this? I've seen it three times, and the closest turned out to be a law clerk of some sort in Belgium.

What about when the laws of the wrong country are applied, like people who seem to think that the U.S. 1st amendment applies outside of the U.S.?

Oh God... I think we resurrect the Founding Fathers and send their zombified corpses after the offender and watch gleefully as they have their brain devoured. This should also be the punishment for applying any US law to anywhere other than the US as well as those who think what is outlined in the Constitution applies to anything other than government conduct.

And... seriously: The constitution applies to government, not private agencies, goddamn it. Even a non-lawyer can grasp this concept.

haz only recently found teh_wank, but *haz* recently had an argument about how teh_constitution freaking works. Why do people in RL ask me dumb questions? WHY?
