what an epic douche.

"I played within the rules that allow me to be a dick and deliberately griefed/corpse-camped you. Never mind that griefing is considered a dick move in most pvp-based games, you should still accept it because it's not explicitly against the rules."

This is just like killing the people fishing in Wintergrasp in WoW -- they've accepted the risks of being there, but they're also no threat to you so killing them kind of makes you a jackass.

I make a specific point of leaving fishers along in WG, but relatively recently, my paladin went there to fish and was attacked by a DK. I protted them down right good. All should fear my protitude!

(And bubble, and LoH on a 20 minute cooldown...)

Good lord, somebody actually gave him a grant to be an online jackfuck. Deities forbid that people actually want to be SOCIAL in a game rather than killing each other. Hell, the fact that said players risk be social in a PVP zone makes it even more commendable.

Mind you, some of the comments in that article makes me want to weep though.

Anthropology FAIL
(Anonymous)

So: First the researcher is so new to gaming that he doesn't realize this is standard behavior.

Then he utterly fails his "Do, like, real-life research and shit" roll by not reading any of the studies of online life that started appearing, oh, 15 or more years ago, thereby missing 15 years of research that would have told him this was normal and expected behavior.

Then he fails his "Get a basic understanding of the field before you try to say anything profound" roll, and doesn't do any research at all in any other online games, read accounts of other people who deviated from online gaming norms the way he planned to deviate, interview anyone on what gamer culture is like, or, well, do any of the Fieldwork 401 groundwork that he should have learned in his first year of grad school.

Then he crafts a study that has the potential to damage the community he's studying.

Then whomever is overseeing his research shits the bed multiple times, failing to realize that:

1. The question the study asks has already been answered multiple times over,
2. The researcher has not done enough groundwork to justify proposing the study, never mind doing it, and
3. The study has a high and well-known risk of harming the community studied.

So the study is approved and funded.

Then the study proves harmful to the community. The researcher fails basic anthropological ethics by not halting the study, AND fails another research roll by doing absolutely no investigation whatsoever, at all, anywhere, into why this is happening and what can be expected to happen next.

And Loyola is supposed to be one of the GOOD Louisiana schools.

I was an anthropology grad student at another LA school--a much worse one--who also planned a study of online gaming communities. That was ten years ago, when there was even less research. I still had to dredge up loads of research for my advisor, I still spent discussion sessions teaching her what my study meant, and ethical considerations were still front and center in her mind. How on earth did the entire department at Loyola fail so thoroughly en masse?

But, but the article says he's been studying video gaming since 1984! He's like a perma-noob.

He believes it proved that, even in a 21st century digital fantasyland, an ugly side of real-world human nature pervades, a side that oppresses strangers whose behavior strays from that of the mainstream.

I am confused as to why this came as a surprise. Really. PEOPLE BUILD COMMUNITIES ON THE INTERNET?!

The professor was disturbed that game rules encouraging competition and varied tactics hardly mattered to gaming community members who wanted to preserve a deeply-rooted culture.

"It started to not be fun," said Myers, a video game aficionado. "I became the most hated, most reviled player."
. . .
"Play and Punishment: The Sad and Curious Case of Twixt"
. . .
But Myers likened his journey as Twixt to a "bad high school experience," especially the verbal abuse and rumor-mongering.
. . .
"If you aren't a member of the tribe, you get whacked with a stick," he said. "I look at social groups with dismay."

And why would you use a PVP environment for your study in a game that's decidedly leaning towards PVE?

Also, who refers to redside toons as "vills"?
