City on the Make

[Not long after Kate arrives.]

"Joe? Sweetie?" Kate reaches out and strokes his hair. "I made you a sandwich."

David makes great sandwiches. Thick bread, lettuce, tomato, as many vegetables as he can sneak in when Joe's not looking, and it still tastes good. "Thank you," he says quietly. ( He's not hungry. )

[Sometime after Sendhil comes to Orlando's place with Hayden and Santiago to spread comfort and healing in his own special way...]

Karl's not really watching the TV anymore. The news report about David Hewlett's kidnapping has obviously upset him, though he's not saying a word, just bouncing at his knee as he stares at the time on the DVD player.

Orlando comes back into the room from cleaning the kitchen and gently takes the remote out of his hand, turning the TV off. ( ''They don't have anything new,'' he says softly. )

[Takes place after David goes missing, and Joe tells Kate that David's been taken. Some time shortly after Kate arrives.]

( David has never, in his life, been so scared. )
