Okay, this was too good not to post here.

In that Tom Cruis video, there's a segment on 9/11. In it, they claim that it was obvious that the air was toxic because the firefighters/police officers/first responders sweated purple (LOLWUT).

Turns out? Not so much.

To quote MollyBloom on it:

There are iodine based soaps that you can wash with.
If you use an iodine based soap to wash a towel, dry it then lightly starch it and get it wet (sweat on it) it will turn anywhere from light purplish blue to dark purple.

The towel is a lie.

Rofl.
I didn't know there were iodine-based soaps, but at least at my school, I think it would be hard to get out of BIO101 without knowing iodine turns purpley in the presence of starch. (Or else it's just that I ended up getting a job as a lab assistant, so I've dealt with the same labs five semesters, now, lol.)

Also, if you make a towel-shaped cake, will the double lie make it actually true?

I know iodine turns purple, and I did horribly in biology and chemistry. It's not rocket science.

Though one could say by the amount of times I got injured in elementary school, I was exposed to plenty of iodine... ;)

Wow.

That's kind of amusing but I feel really bad for all of those first responders who've been genuinely duped. That shit is awful quack science, here.

See, the other week I was watching House and it was talking about "if we do this and this and this it will turn purple" and I automatically thought of the Scientology 9/11 thing and went "huh".

Who says TV isn't edumakashunal?
