What the fuck.  Talk about women in refrigerators....

(I liked the hallucination bits though.  My prediction for the reveal was that House was a god or alien and his brain produced pretty hallucinations in a way no one else's could.  That or Wilson's disease, so Scrubs could have scooped them.)

Done! This is me, doing a victory lap of doneness! Work has been INSANE with this once a year thing we do that pretty much has everyone working non-stop and pulling late nights and I was amongst the non-stop workers. I had to multitask going to the bathroom, people.

But my part of all this is done! And now others get to go be insane while I relax! Woooo!

That's about it for the latest on my end. Seriously, work swallowed me whole. But in my now relaxing time I'm watching Gossip Girl and making arrangements for future vacations.

Also I am in cat bondage. Could be worse, really.

There's an article up on The Official XBox Magazine, decrying the use of "The Other F-Word".

My guess is it’s supposed to be an slur and a punchline…except it’s not a slur if you’re actually gay (hint: all the gay people already know they’re gay, so no need for the news flash) and it’s not a punchline because it’s not actually funny. And yet somehow calling someone’s sexuality into question became a default zinger at the end of a losing match. Really? That’s the best you can do? Maybe you should just, you know, learn how to play defense.

Makes me happy.

The pros and cons [12 May 2008|06:54pm]

[ mood | tired ]

Good things about today -

It was cool and cloudy, just-right weather. Even the fleeting light drizzle was pleasant.
I got my TV converter box
Ann Chamberlin's Sofia and The Sultan's Daughter are good re-reads.

Bad things about today -

I had to wait 40 minutes past my appointment time to talk to my doctor.
Talking to my doctor about the effects of my meds on my sex drive is really really embarassing.
The converter box was $25 after the $40 voucher.
I was too tired from running around to pick up soda.

So, not too bad I suppose. I'm off the Cymbalta, going on to a higher dose of Zoloft than I had been on, since I've been so lethargic. And there should be a generic out of Risperdal soon. When that happens, Lamictal will be my only name-brand med... assuming the cocktail doesn't change, which is a big damned if.

Enough about my meds, I guess.

Not really good or bad, but amusing: There was a massively chatty guy at the bus stop outside of Best Buy. Not flirty, just really chatty. He told me all about his returning a computer woes. It was amusing.

Last Week's Friday Five, Good Things!, Movies [12 May 2008|11:36am]

(This is a combination of what I was going to post on Friday but ran out of time for and today’s post.)

My horoscope on Friday was trying to warn me away from this:

There is a fanciful frenzy that is trying to lure you in to its madness. ... If it doesn't have real meaning for you, don't waste your time.

I don’t know, horoscope. That sounds like a fun time to me, especially since it’s Friday and fanciful frenzies can have a great deal of meaning for me. I think my horoscope writer is anti-Discordian.

My Friday Five Answers were kind of long )

Today is my weekly weigh-in and I always feel nervous and stressed out before it, because what if I haven’t lost any weight, or have lost less than I feel I should have. I know that’s not a good way of thinking and that some weeks I won’t see the number on the scale go down, even though I’ve done all the right things. So to help me stay motivated and not stress out over the numbers, I’m going to try doing something new on Mondays. In addition to weighing, I’m going to remind myself of how my life is better this week since I started eating healthier food and getting some exercise.

Some observations [11 May 2008|09:51pm]

UK folks, I hope you appreciate how good Galaxy bars are. Milk chocolate that good is premium in the US.

When napping, a large and placid cat is a very good companion. Anya is big enough to be truly huggable (not only is she a plump kitty, she's got those big Maine Coon genes), and laid-back enough to put up with being hugged.

Mary Roach is an engaging writer, and her books are well suited to audiobook format as well. But the reader of the Spook audiobook put on this Apu-ish voice during the bit with an Indian doctor researching reincarnation... I was snickering and shaking my head.

Tomorrow will be A Day. In the morning, the exterminator is coming (not a special event; HACA sends a guy around to spray in the kitchen once a month). Then I'm off to MHMR to have a med check. And since I'll be out and about already, I'll do some erranding... I can take the bus to Best Buy on the way back and get a TV converter box, and depending on how peppy I feel after (and how heavy the converter is) stop at Target, HEB, or the corner store for some soda on the way home. If I go to Target I can also go to Popeye's. I haven't had Popeye's in literally years and I love their chicken.

...in July I'll have lived in solitude for five years. Five years of being a hermit crazy cat lady. I should commemorate the event somehow. Any suggestions?

I don't need new fandoms! [11 May 2008|01:34am]

I read an article the other day about Stephanie Meyer and how religion influenced her writing, and it was surprisingly not boring, so when I wandered into Borders looking for a book I had not read a dozen times, I was compelled to pick up "Twilight".

Six days later, I've read all three of the books twice, and I'm starting "Twilight" again.

God damn it, I have like, two posters and four poster abstracts and a lecture to write by Friday! I'm not supposed to be reading anything unless it mentions synchrotrons, metalloproteins, or Gaussian peak-fitting!

And I watched the trailer a little while ago. A couple of times. You know, just seven or eight... teen.

Can it be December yet?

I think the trailer broke my brain. I don't know about the casting -- Robert Pattinson doesn't really look like the Edward in my head, but he seems to play Edward very well. Very, very well. Kristen Stewart is like, awesome and totally Bella. I loff her. And Kellan Lutz! OMG, he's SO Emmett! Smaller than I imagined him, but his attitude is perfect! I love Emmett. He is quite possibly my favourite character in the whole series, if only for that line where he's like, "How come Bella gets to fight with werewolves?" OMG, Emmett.

Ashley Greene is less petite than the teeny-tiny Alice that Bella goes on about, but she's got the perfectly freakish look going on. Yay Alice! Esme's too old, Carlisle blond hair looks HORRIBLE -- every time I read "Carlisle" in the books, I wonder why they all call him by his last name, because I keep thinking of Peter Carlisle from Blackpool, and it really messes me up -- and Rosalie just looks too nice and not bitchy enough. But based on the clips I've seen, they're all really, really good in their roles.

But this summarizes pretty much how I feel about the whole thing, including the part where I had to download the series to my iPod. *headdesk*

If it can't be December, can it at least be August already?

Will ETA with the result on Monday, probably.

Lek and I marathoned the first season of Dexter today. (We ended up skipping a few episodes when we discovered that the episodes ended up out of order on the disc, but the "Previously..." at the start of each episode made sure we didn't miss anything important.)

We were both fairly bored by it overall and found that every episode had a LOT of "dead air", with boring subplots and character interaction that we just didn't care about.

And what was up with the loving close-ups and slow motion shots of Michael C. Hall eating in most of the episodes? It got better as the season progressed, but it really stuck out and was something Lek and I were joking about even by the end of the season.

Oh, and gratuitous boobies, but never any male nudity. It's premium cable! Show a little cock once in a while!

Being fair, or playing too nice? [10 May 2008|07:36pm]

Throughout the Lexicon Wank, there have been small hints here and there of trouble in SVA's personal life, mostly having to do with him leaving his wife for a fellow fan. However, any real discussion of it in the endless series of wank entries on the subject has been banned or frowned upon, and so those small nuggets have been all that I knew, not being connected to the issue in any way save f_w.

It was interesting to me then to recently discover through comments here that allegedly Steve's obsession with the Lexicon and Harry Potter strained his family/marriage (which still exists, he's not divorced yet), that the woman he is dating is 23 (while he is 50 and his own daughter is 20), that he has almost no contact with his kids, and that since he is in the UK at this time he is not paying any support to his family, among other sordid details.

And by interesting, I don't mean "gee, look at what a fucked up mess this guy's life is!" schadenfreude. I feel that these details, while related to his personal life, cast some of his statements, decisions, and motivations as are related to the Lexicon and this whole mess in a different light. Additionally, the recent trend in press coverage portraying him as a sad, child-like innocent seem even more odd when you consider the apparent shambles of his family life.

I say because, for example, over the course of the wank there was mention of him needing to find a job in England, or saying that he moved to England to write. Well, according to his wife, he moved there to get out of paying support and apparently his girlfriend lives there. So there's something that has perhaps a different tenor if you know the personal details or not. And the press playing up the quiet librarian angle? According to his wife, he got fired from that job due to the affair, since it was a Christian school. I could go on and on, but I don't really want to dissect SVA's personal life, just show a few instances of how this stuff made me (and I think could make others) reconsider events as they pertain to the wank.

So, I'm not sure what I think about f_w keeping this on the DL. I have seen small instances of personal nastiness popping up in relation to what limited information has been posted, and I can see where extensive discussion has the potential to set off its own wank of epic proportions. On the other hand, I can't say that I think that it's not at all relevant either. I guess that means we'll chalk this up as yet another issue where I've taken a strong, decisive stance.

I'm biting the bullet... I really need a new TV, even if it is a bottom-of-the-range one. I'd rather not spend money on getting it shipped or taking a taxi home. Can I impose on one of the Austinites on my flist to give me a ride to Best Buy and/or Target (the two closest places) and back? I'll treat you to a (admittedly, fast food or at least cheap, but of your choosing) meal in appreciation.
