Except this time, it isn't actually the Aspies.

[info]arquel is bothered by noisy kids.

[info]eris_devotee -- remember her? -- thinks arquel is a sick, sick person for even THINKING about swatting those poor, harmless, nice normal kids!

It's small, but I have no faith that it's gonna stay that way. Funny, I thought it was the people WITH AS who were supposed to take things so damn literally.

I'm starting to get the impression that nine times out of ten Asperger's is just an excuse for being, you know, CONFUSED AND/OR ANNOYED BY NORMAL EVERYDAY THINGS THAT CONFUSE AND/OR ANNOY EVERYBODY ELSE. Just, y'know, with a trendy medical name. To make it speshul.

Well, yeah, kind of like dyslexia is a fancy name for not being able to use your damn spellcheck. *shrug* Small number of genuine cases, large number of posers and/or wankers.

I didn't think arquel was being especially wanky, just whiny.

I'm leaning towards agreement: I'd never heard of the disorder until just recently, when people started using it as an excuse. "Well, I'm Asperger, so I don't get your joke / won't tolerate your behavior / am going to behave like an ass."

Now, apparently, it's a very recently "discovered" illness, but... dude. It seems like you can't swing a dead cat on LJ without hitting someone with it.

I remember when I first heard of Asperger's. I was all - "My god, this describes the younger me down to the pubic hairs!"

And then I met the people who claim to have it.

("You! Out of my diagonosed medical condition!")

While Asperger's might be over-diagnosed (or self-diagnosed by people who don't really have it), my cousin has it, and I know that it is a real disorder. It's considered a high-functioning form of autism, where the person has incredible difficult understanding social cues, has a tendency to fixate on minor things (like the guy in Rain Man who can count cards), and become overly anxious over minor things. Ironically, until recently it was under-diagnosed, and my cousin (a very sweet boy) suffered through a variety of bad diagnoses before he finally got the treatment they deserve.

That said, there might be people who use the disorder to get 'special' treatment, whether or not they're actually afflicted but that doesn't make it any less real.

You need to look up what Asperger's is.

Oh, I know what it is. But IMHO it's in the same group of "sure, riiiiight" illnesses as attention deficit disorder and dyslexia - as in "one out of five actually HAVE it and the other four are just glomming onto a trendy excuse for being stupid and/or a pain in the ass."

Please note that I say "one of out five." I'm not saying these things don't exist. Just not as much as society would have us think in order to sell as much medication and therapy as possible.

To the best of my knowledge, I don't even have Aspbergers, but I sure as hell want to smack noisy kids when I'm exposed to them.

The key lies in the difference between 'wanting to' and 'going on and doing it' I suppose, but venting about it on a journal certainly doesn't qualify as despotic and abusive behavior.

Nine times out of ten, I'd rather smack their parents. Some people want so badly to be their kids' friends that they forget to be their, you know, PARENTS. And then they have the nerve to act surprised when their untamed, self-centered hellspawn go around fucking shit up for the rest of the world.

Nah, I want to smack the kids. It's just a visceral thing.

If I thought smacking the parents would help, I'd try it, but they'd probably smack me right back.

I don't think it was wanking as much as it was venting.

I often bitch about the noisy kids next door who can't play basketball without screaming like their balls were being set on fire.

Personally I'd love to take a belt to them and then run the damn ball over with my car.

Of course I won't actually do that but sometimes it's nice to fantasize about it.

OH PLEASE GOD NO ANYTHING BUT THAT!!
HAVE MERCY!!

I lived in this student housing thingy a couple of years ago and the girl who lived next to me managed to put on The death of Aase on repeat at an extremly high volume and then LEAVE. She was gone for hours and I thought I was going to go mad in the meantime. Ever since I have been unable to listen to the music of peer gynt without feeling like I'm being suffocated, which wasn't so good when I was doing my bachelors in music, first year music analysis, it was obligatory analysis. *twitch*

I love the play tho. But only to read it.

Damn Aase. I thought she'd never die.

Another Aspie and I have come to the conclusion that an Aspie community is just a bad idea. Because, OMG, the wank--it burns. And it's frequent. Yes, let's take a lot of anti-social people and give them a place to congregate.

Portland has an Asperger's community...and I don't mean online, I mean where we go to meet face to face.

At *least* once per meeting, a fight will break out.

I jest you not.

I get an unholy glee out of that information. I have serious issues.

I just think it's so crazy to put a bunch of Aspies in an online community, and then have some of them go, "Wow! There's wank to be had! Who saw that coming? Not me!"
