"Would you shoot your aunt to honour her spirit?"
I was beginning to wonder if the therian comm would ever produce spooge...

Therianthropy. A relatively quiet and relatively drama-free comm dedicated towards therians and therianthropy* and the various ways of expressing it.

Of course, that's helped by the mod squad as they do their best to keep things calm.

Unfortunately, that doesn't prevent disagreements from popping up now and then.

Enter Ashleywolf, who posts about a wolf skull she got and queries about how to preserve her gift.

Various members comment to tell her about their animal bits that they've gotten over the years, and all seems fine, until Northwolf shows up to tell Ashleywolf that "the best way to honour your phenotype** is to NOT kill it, and that paying someone to shoot a wolf or another animal is bad because it encourages them to do it more and 'would you kill your aunt to get closer to her?'".

There's not a lot of drama, and hopefully it'll stay small, because if it doesn't the mods will probably step in and delete the whole post. Which would be a shame.

Anyways, it's small, but it's funny, and you can't say you didn't see this coming.

For those of you who are curious as to what some of these things mean...

*therianthropy: the belief that a person's soul is entirely or partially animal.
**phenotype: the animal that a person believes is where their soul type comes from.

Oookay then. She was given it by some random friend or relative, wants to know where it comes from, but obviously she specifically paid someone to hunt it down and kill it. Nice reading-the-first-post skills.

On a completely off-topic note, I haven't seen North in ages... huh.

Your icon is so pretty, but I can't make out the address well enough to find more of the art.

*headdesk*

I thought I used my Furc icon.

*stupid moment*

It's from www.kyoht.com. She does a lot of anthro art of the "were" style (basically it's more "animal" than "humanoid", the were style).

I've got a repro of Kyoht's "four elements" hanging on my living room wall. Lovely, lovely stuff.

Incidentally, that Unicron icon has made my day. :)

Huh, and here I would assume that someone *found* it already dead.

...that might be because I have a friend who does what the second replyer does and goes around looking for roadkill to salvage the bones...

But eh.

I can't see the word phenotype without thinking of Richard Dawkins. I should go look for some Dawkins/Gould or Dawkins/ creationist wank.

Other than that, um, yeah, bones are nifty. I usually get mine from roadkill too. Because tracking things down and shooting them? Hard work.

(Okay, bracing myself and checking my notes; it's time to preach to the choir.)

I find myself profoundly irritated by the use of "phenotype" in this context not only for the co-opting of perfectly good biological jargon ("get out of my scientific discipline, you're making us look stupid!") but just for the flagrant incorrectness of the usage. "Phenotype" refers to the observable features of an individual, so using it for some sort of intangible sense that you possess a wolf spirit or a fox spirit or a weevil spirit or whatever seems to be utterly wrong. Regardless of what animal they think they are, they can be unilaterally observed to possess a human phenotype.

(.. er, sorry about that; after last semester, I still double-check every use of the word "significant" to make sure I've got the statistics right. I'll go get a tissue and have a lie-down now.)

I was wondering why they were using that word myself...I was pretty sure it was, you know, wrong.

I understand ya here.

"Phenotype" refers to the physical traits of an organism (or object, but I've never heard it used that way) - its appearance and physical traits that make it what it is, appearance-wise.

A soul - regardless of what you say it "looks like" - has no physical form that we can comprehend. Or rather, since no-one can see it, you can't really say it "looks like" anything.

I've heard that some weres aren't too keen on the use of "phenotype", but it's considered wide-spread use-wise.

I suppose a different term would be better here, though the odds of it gaining widespread acceptance may be limited.

Still, I weep for the lack of respect the sciences get these days.

Seems like most people don't care about it any more; it's not "cool" or whatever the excuses were/are.

Well, I understand the idea of linguistic drift, and as I'm not a therianthrope, I'll let the community determine its own usages. If "phenotype" has developed an entirely new and robust meaning in therio context, so be it. It just irritates me as a biology student given that that new meaning, however robust, is entirely the opposite of its scientific meaning.

Well, it IS kinda hypocritical creepy to see racks of actual animal tails and pelts for sale at furrycons.

...not that I've actually been to one or anything. *eyedart*

Okay, laugh at me if you want, but we have a lot of furries in our area, and these displays turn up at most local SF cons.

Now, my Chinese ex-husband's family calls me wu le tseng, which means "fox woman" and I've also had the Japanese version of this epithet thrown at me a few times. I know that it is not an OMG you're kewl complimentary thing to say, believe me. But so many people called me fox for a few years in my life that I started answering to it, and I did some real research (using books from university presses with lots of citations) into Japanese fox cults and the like to try and find out why people were saying this to me that I didn't know. My ex's family I figure says that because they hate me.

So I was at a con and I could. not. keep. away from this one black and white pelt, I'd keep coming over and stroking it and looking goofy and the lady at the booth was grinning, because she knew that she was going to make some money. End of story, I went home $175 poorer with the pelt, and I'd thought it was a very small wolf or something but she told me that it was a fox. So here I am, grown woman, walking around with this dead fox skin draped around my shoulders petting it and occasionally saying dumb things like "foxy foxy foxy" outloud when I forget to disconnect backbrain from mouth. Now I am an occultist, but I am a sceptical occultist and a Penn&Teller BULLSHIT fan.

I still don't know why people call me a fox sometimes and I still don't know why I HAD to buy the fox pelt, but I put it on my altar when I do magick, I pet it when I feel bad and drape it around myself, and it makes me feel better, and in the end if it makes my life improve then I suppose there were worse things I could do with $175.

So, do I know what that's about, not totally, but hey. People are weird and I'm no exception.
