The Lifestyles of the Canine/Feline and Vegan
Someone in Stupid Pet Owners objects to people who insist on a vegan lifestyle for their pets after seeing a number of unhealthy "vegan" pets through his/her/its friend's job as a groomer. A lot of people agree, including many vegitarians and vegans. Some don't. MANY claims, on both sides, of scientific proof backed up by anecdotal evidence.

Pets can be cruelty-free too! They have morals (as long as they were brought up right.).

And just plain quoi?:
The appendix is designed to digest TREE BARK.

Animals don't build things because they ate their opposable thumbseat red meat.

I didn't know dogs could be alergic to meat. (Not really wanky, but interesting.)

and sing it with me, There are NO cats in Amereeeeka!

and Humans are CLEARLY herbivores. You can tell by our teeth. Much pastede on yay graphics ensue.

Someone please have an Eddie Izzard "I'm an EEEVILLE herbivore!" icon! Please!

There are some real idiots in that thread. The only veggies my cats want to eat are my plants, cat nip, and paresely. Even if I were to try to cut meat out of there diet (they probably stage a revolt and overthrow me) cats (and dogs) eat bugs.

One of my cats as a taste for spider webs and spiders. The other for little black ants.

My cat likes bread (I think he prefers white and French bread, but he'll eat any) and moths. The other one will not eat table scraps.

My cat will eat the all but one of the legs off of daddy-long-leg spiders. He likes to watch them twitch.

Cruelty free? Pouka most definately is not. But then, maybe I didn't raise him properly. Woe!

My cat likes peas and hates seafood. On the other hand, he loves Peking Duck and ham. And plastic bags--yummeh! Conclusion? My cat is a primarily carnivorous idiot.

I have a cat that has eaten things like pizza crust, Ritz crackers, cake, cheese, ceral, eggs, bread, and triscuts.

So I don't know if he's like a veggie kittie or just plain weird.

And my aunt has a cat that's rapidly becoming and outdoor menace. So far she's taken out two mice and nearly got a chipmunk.

Over the last couple of weeks, my cat has brought in three mice, two miscellanious furry things and a bird, and then proceeded to butcher them in the kitchen (and cold vole intestines are not a nice thing to stand in at 5:30 on a Monday morning).

And I'm supposed to convince her to go vegan? I'm pretty sure she'd just eat me instead.

Right, we're herbivores, which is why we have canines. *headesk*

And I have nothing else to except "and I shall eat all of the leaves off the trees, and the other giraffes shall DIE."

Don't you just love gratuitous movie-related jokes?

Seriously though that kid is pretty dim if he can't remember that there's seven species* of cat currently residing in the Americas.

I wonder if he'll tell me those biologists were wrong...

It's believed by some that there's an eighth felid in the Americas - the onza - but the jury's still out on it.

Cats require meat in their diet. Meat supplies taurine. Without taurine, cats will suffer SERIOUS health problems and permanent damage to their bodies.

GOD these people are idiots.

[info]criticalcricket

Dogs and cats have pointy teeth. Do we know why class? Yes, because they eat meat! It is common sense. Too bad common sense is a lost art these days.

A lot of those people ended up arguing the validity of a vegan diet period. It's hard to read through when each side is going "I'm right!" "No, I'm right." "Nu uh, you're both wrong 'cause I'm right!" Then there's the "You're feeding your animal crappy grain based food anyway jackass!" and "Vets are evil" arguments. It makes my head hurt. Let's bring up some funneh.

Why cant I run like a cheater when i too eat meat.

They must not have found that cheat sheet up your sleeve, so there's no need to run yet. Not that it helped much as you still can't spell.

Animals do not have morals? I think they have friendships. They love. They care for one another. They care for their young and for anyone else that would come along (as long as they were raised correctly).

*HEADDESK HEADDESK HEADDESK*

NO NO NO NO NO, animals do NOT have morals, they are not moral agents, just the same as a newborn human baby is not a moral agent. GAH.

Having emotions or being sentient is NOT the same thing as being capable of mortality or having a system of ethics. Take a philosophy course asshat, anthropomorphising animals does not help your case.

Shit, I can't even get my horse to conform to a vegan diet. The hairy little bastard's always swiping my chicken sandwiches, Slim Jims, tuna, etc.. And I won't even get into the times that overgrown jackass* gotten out and ended up with his nose in a bag of catfood or dogfood. Then there's the fact that when I took a friend up on the suggestion of keeping goldfish in the water barrel (because supposedly they keep it clean or something), he slurped them up right in front of me. That's not right.

If I have this much trouble convincing a herbivore to go vegan, then I can't imagine trying to get my dogs and cats to stop eating meat.

*Yes, I do love my horse. Why do you ask?

Making your pets go vegan is, if you'll excuse the pun, a pet peeve of mine.

Dammit, you do not "love animals" if you can't respect the nature of the beast enough to feed it what it naturally eats, as long as that is possible. Ugh.
