dilbert feed suspended?
Sweet Jesus, the LJ Dilbert feed went and got itself fucking suspended. Has anyone ever heard of a feed being suspended?

And more importantly, does anyone have any details? You don't read the comments for a day, and look what happens.. I guess the wank finally imploded!

Sorry if this a little OT, but I know some of you enjoy LJ feed wank as much as I do, and I figured someone would have an idea of what happened.

I don't know but I'm guessing that it's either a bandwidth issue or a copyright one or a combination of the two.

Since those were hugely popular feeds, the bandwidth consumption of the remote images must have been considerable. I can't visit comics.com from here, but I bet it's advertising-supported. Since there weren't any ads on the LJ feeds, but they were eating bandwidth for the hosting site, they probably complained to Livejournal.

If comics.com were smart, they'd release "official" feeds that contained links to the daily comic on their site, along with some sort of teaser. Then they'd benefit from the huge LJ following without the bandwidth issue.

Anyhoo... that'd be my guess.

just go here, and paste the URL of which feed you want into the field at the bottom of the page. Click "add" and there you go!

Yeah, me too. I've started saying it to my students, and they all want an explanation.

That's always fun to give to foreign language students. "Um, well, see, there was the girl..."

I usually just go with "It's a cultural thing."

ah, don't feel guilty. I've also wanked it several times (and recently, at that), and I doubt we had anything to do with it, unless we just increased the traffic to it... I've never seen any of the dilbert commenters mention being wanked, so I don't know if they're even aware we exist.

I would bet that the feeds have been removed because the publisher complained - that seems to be the most common reason. A lot of the syndication accounts on LiveJournal weren't created with the permission of the publisher; some even use screen-scraping programs to capture the image URLs when the publisher doesn't provide a feed.

Since a lot of the comics accounts were suspended at the same time, it's probably a case of a popular syndicator (heard speculation that it's comics.com) writing to LiveJournal to ask them to remove the feeds.

As did 9 Chickweed Lane and Over the Hedge, and all the other ones everyone said. I have a "Just Comics" filter, so they don't clog my flist, and it was all empty yesterday. Quelle suckage.
