gender pronoun arguing
Over in [info]lj_nifty, there's a something I didn't bother clicking on that's friendslist related.

Well, apparently it refers to the person as just a he, which leads to some polite complaints (although I wonder about the one going 'I don't want to sound feminist') about it.

Anyway, there's this minor bit of wank between [info]lizzie9208 and [info]fidelity_astro about fidelity_astro's insistence that he is the most accepted form of address.

Later on, there is declarations about not wanting to hear about [info]lizzie9208's vagina.

Perhaps it will grow. er, the wank. Not the bodypart.

Sometimes I feel like I must be the only woman alive who isn't offended by the pronoun "he."

You're not. Al the fapping about political correctness would be funny if the people involved weren't being so serious about it. Oh, wait...

Hell, I didn't even notice about the gender, all I could think was ermmm... LJ does this already by looking at the user info.

Then again premshree is behind that damnable bandwidth-eating "most recent images" script that people were using for awhile.

I'm not. Well, except on the days when I hate all gendered third person pronouns, but that covers 'she' as well. And that usually is writing related, since I was stupid enough to create a language that had something like 8-10 third person singular pronouns.

You're not. When I'm referring to fans and writing I do tend to default to she but people in general being called 'he' really doesn't bother me a bit. It's much better than some of the twirly constructions like 's/he' or 'he or she'.

I've always wondered if that means I should hand in my feminist card, but...no. A feminist is someone who wants and works for equality, not a complete dipshit who checked their brain in at the door when being admitted to the disco of life.

Is it wrong that I'm more offended by "they" because it's plural where the word should be singular?

No, I am too. [/anal English major] On the other hand, this language is seriously lacking in gender-neutral pronouns.

It's true, and he/she sounds awkward. I usually use 'they' in speech just because I don't think about it quickly enough that I notice, but in writing, I tend to just pick one or the other and go with it.

I hate when people use "they" to avoid using "he." Dude, just use "she" if "he" bothers you that much. If it's not an academic paper no one will care as long as you're consistent. (Although it can be really amusing when people alternate between she and he. "If a person wants to to take option one she should go through door a. On the other hand, if she wants to take option two, he should go through door c.")

*dies*

ahahaha.

I used to use 'they' a lot when I was younger and didn't want to specify the gender of the person I was dating or lusting after. It was wondrously entertaining to see who figured me out. I was an odd adolescent.

If a person wants a gender neutral pronoun in place of "he" or "she," it should just use "it."

oh, has he shown up before? And your italics confused me for a moment. I thought you were quoting and I was like "oh dear, did I make a typo that looks like tally?"

Sorry for italic confusion, then :)

He wanked over the Calvin&Hobbes feed audience for not imparting new and useful information on him, only recently.
And someone linked to some older wank with him in that thread. It was something about wolves.

"he" is the most proper way to do it as, in english, "he" doubles as both the masculine and neuter pronoun. and "they" doesn't work because it's plural. so like, proper grammar before political correctness, "dude."

Thanks for clearing that up, "dude"! I now see how it would be insane for anyone to suggest that it is possible to use they *koffstandardenglishusagesincebeforeShakespeare'stime* because it's a plural pronoun, but it makes perfect sense for the gendered pronoun "he" to function as a neuter pronoun! I get it!

If anyone disagrees, let him!
