Wicca Wank
My first wank, be gentle use lube.

Unofortunately, the genesis of this one has been deleted. It starts on the LJ Wiccan community, where someone starts a thread that degenerates into a debate between Traditional Wicca and "neo-Wicca" or eclectic Wicca. Upset about the debate, Sensual_Blossom starts a thread solely to bitch about how meeeeean the Traditional Wiccans were. This thread contained much interesting spooge, but was unfortunately deleted by the mod when it further degenerated into insults against her. Silvertree, the Mod, follows with a locked post on the community banning all Wicca vs Neo-Wicca discussion for the forseeable future.

And all was quiet, until one of Sensual_Blossom's minions, Emerald Rose, posted over in Pagan a thread advertising a new community whose sole purpose seems to be allowing the slighted neo-Wiccans to congregate and bitch about how horribly they were treated by Silvertree. (It's a Wiccan version of Snacky's Law-- Traditional Wiccans as those nasty eeebil mean girls in high school.)

Spooge erupts, featuring a memorable exchange between Wiccans_Unite moderator immortal102100, who bitches that:

Both of us (the moderators) were treated extremely poorly, even when we were just asking questions! Like the person that claimed to know everything about traditional wicca had a personal vendetta against us, and then refused to appologize when hurting us. I think that more than anything is what she is trying to say.

which merits this tactful-but-exasperated reply from Wibble:

So you're talking about, what, one person who was a twat? You need to learn to grow thicker skins, and learn when people's comments can be worthwhile and when they're not. Someone claiming to know everything about a /mystery tradition/ is going to be full of shit. Ignore them and find someone more worthwhile.

... My view is that if you're tired of getting stepped on the best solution is to grow thorns, not try and have the steppers excluded from normal society for being mean.

But then! The spooge spills over onto the new community, where the very first post is a long, whining rant about the Horrible Silvertree, to which Bukyou replies:

You know how hypocritical you two are being, with your thinly veiled insults towards silvertree and the wiccan community? You're sitting here on high little horses, still bleeding your internet martyr blood, rubbing each others egos about how mean everyone was to you while being disgustingly snide and rude.

And oh, this does NOT go over well. Bukyou is banned, showing exactly how tolerant this "uniting" community really is. (Gee, big surprise!)

While the earlier entries are now gone, this is still nicely wanky and-- as there are already three communities and gosh knows how many personal LJs involved-- definitely seems to be growing.

Everyone in these threads needs 'TO KEEP SILENT' scrawled over their mouths. Preferably in indelible marker, over duct tape.

Oy. Don't remind me.

(emerald_rose just makes me want to go 'no! no! it's STAR SAPPHIRE!'. But then, that would come close to bringing the Thelema vs Wicca wank, and that shit makes Crystal look tame.)

I never saw why people make such a big deal over it. You can be pagan without being Wiccan - some very proficient witches I know aren't Wiccan. Why do these people feel the need to identify themselves with a group that keeps trying to kick them out?

It's like a fraternity, where the house down the street keeps trying to say they're part of the faternity too - and all the original frats are saying "No you're not", and these new guys keep insisting that they're realy part of the fraternity - despite never being initiated.

And you can be a witch and not a pagan, but then, this is rapidly turning into 'perennial pagan wanks 101'.

Maybe there should be a [info]pagan_wank?

It is if the founder says that it is. Honestly, Wicca is Gerald's little treehouse secret club, and if he wants to say that all the people in it need to dance around a teapot with a banna peel on their head to be part of his club, then everyone who wants in has to do the bannana teapot dance. If you think it's incredibly stupid, you don't have to join his secret club. The whole thing is ridiculous.

It's ironic isn't it? They complain that major religions oppress them and then turn around and say others aren't practicing Wicca the right way. Generally speaking.

FWIW, most hardcore traditional Wiccans I know are either too busy a) brewing mead, b) rolling in their pre-dotcom software millions, c) getting laid, d) organizing things (cons, retreats, their stock portfolio, or whatever) or e) cheerfully pretending to be Christian or atheist (or Jewish) to whine about prosecution.

Seriously. The closest to pagan stereotype I've ever met in a initiated, traditional Wiccan was a Blue Star guy, and it was more for the hippie and flakey than the whiny. All the actual Gardnerians (including Alexandrians) I know are basically left-of-center, upscale-crunchy yuppies and/or academics.
