feminist mullet wank!
This entire thing amuses me so greatly I had to post it.

So someone posts to [info]feminist, saying that her bisexual friend says mean things about "butch" lesbians. The poster is appalled and wants an explanation for her friend's behavior.

Things are civil until [info]waneeshee posts the Stupidest Reply Ever™:

its not the "masculine presentation" of butch lesbians that makes me annoyed, its their tendancy to dress like they don't care what they look like. having short hair is fine. having a mullet and a wardrobe straight out of the 80s is not. straight people look terrible and disheveled all time. but they are not placed under the same scrutiny that gays are. its harder for us because we do have to be more self-conscious. when someone doesnt put any effort into their appearance, it gives people the impression that they don't care about themselves, and that they dont have 'pride'--which gays are so fond of trumpeting about. people--male or female-- just look STUPID wearing certain hairstyles and certain fashions. looking stupid and looking masculine are two different things entirely.

All-out wank ensues.

"since when was it in line with feminist principles to demand that women enslave themselves to fashion if they want to be taken seriously?"

Nobody had opinions before TV was invented!

"strangely, my straight friends don't feel that the hick down the street with the mullet is giving them a bad name."

"Nobody hates gay people; they're just anti-mullet!" (This thread in particular is a true font of hilarity spooge.)

Damn those 'camp' straight men!

We are all united in that mullets look ridiculous on everyone! Nobody really cares about any of this "homosexual rights" stuff anyway, because people aren't that deep. It's all about the hair!

Fat good! Mullet bad!

There's even more wank here - something about monkeys and toasters and "people shouldn't be defined by their sexuality, although straights suck", but this is about the time that my brain exploded.

Enjoy!

...and a wardrobe straight out of the 80s is not.

And I ask myself, has this person been INSIDE a clothes store SINCE 1995? Because every one of the buggers I've been in recently has tried to stick me with beige A-lines and bias-stripe wrap-around dresses that are soooooooooo 1983!

P.S. Leggings are back too. *screams in terror*

Oh, Jesus. Where the hell has that person been shopping that they aren't blinded by the neon every time they walk into the mall? Because I want to shop there.

Take a lesson from your elders, kids. If we looked stupid in that shit, you probably will too.

Well, I think all good-looking lesbians should only wear tight black leather - and maybe some lace. Heck, I'd like all good-looking women to wear that. So should all the guys.

Sadly, the world does not dress in order to cater to my ogling voyeristic perversions.

I would understand calling something wrong if it hurt someone. For example, masturbating with someone elses intestines may hurt someone. Doing it with shampoo or lotion, or even your own mucus, isnt hurting anyone. unching someone seems to be wrong because it hurts. Punching a bag is ok because nobody else is hurting

Thank you for bringing that mental image into my life. I have to go vomit now.

Yes. Goddamn unfashionable gays, they always confuse me when I'm looking for an interior decorator. I always think they're those slovenly straight people and I wouldn't want one of *those* pigs in my house, they're only fit for mowing my lawn and other outside jobs. Because that's where mullets belong.

i think the bigger challenge is just to be yourself without considering how people will perceive you. what interests me is the fact that people do treat me differently when they know im a lesbian upfront. i think its more monumental to have people like you as a person, only to discover that you are part of a stigmatized group, than to throw it in their face right away and alienate yourself.

I know it is the wanker so to speak, but I agree with that fully.

As my friend said once, "When someone comes up to me and says out of the blue that they're gay, I want to say, 'And you want a cookie?'"

Uncle Carl is.... a lesbian?! I thought he was just a hick who liked NASCAR!

I've only ever seen a mullet on a woman with 3 kids and a husband in a Burger King, so I tend to associate it more with Burger King than lesbians. Unless there's something The Subservient Chicken isn't telling us.
