Once again over on the Etiquette Hell board they are wanking again.

It started innocently enough when Venus 193 started a topic wondering where the line was drawn for jokes to become tasteless and offensive.

Things go along fine until ToughOldBroadUnhinged(hereafter refered to a TOBU) makes this comment I have also noticed a tendency on the part of the PC Nazis to offend at will, as long as they are doimg the offending. here

Some-one gets insulted and blows a fuse. How DARE you refer to me or anyone else on this board as a Nazi! HOW DARE YOU! I'm guessing she's not up with all the modern use of the word nazi(man I would have to see her response to some-one using the word femnazi)

TOBU tries to explain the term as it relates to modern usage, but instead gets lectured about how horribly Nazi's were and how wrong it is to use the term "playfully"

Some-one tries to stop the thread by posting Godwin's Law and is promptly ignored by the rest of the forum.

That's pretty much all the choice bits except for a mod telling TOBU how she must only use the word Nazi in it's historical context and demands from others for an apology.

While it is pretty wanky, I can see why people don't like it. I despise Nazi being used in that context myself. I am German and have been called Nazi by people. And they sure as hell didn't mean 'grammar Nazi' or something.

I feel the same, and I'm Jewish. It's really not something to joke about.

*wince* Ouch. 'Fascist' has the same meaning they want and is much more general. You could suggest that as a less unfortunate replacement if it comes up again.

I missed the rule that said if Seinfeld made a joke about it, you can't reasonably be offended by it.

I can see both sides of this...

On one hand just because something is a joke doesn't mean it's automatically funny, and there are a lot of jokes out there that really are hurtful.

On the other hand people can't read each other's mind so they really can't know what will offend you unless you tell them.

Also I do think we need to lighten up and be willing to laugh at ourselves because there are way too many people who will go to great lengths to be offended.

As a two-dimensional human being, your use of the expression "both sides" offends me.
