But-but-but...SHE MUTILATES BABIES OMG!!11!11
In the latest issue of Newsweek, columnist Debra Darwick has an article about why body piercing gives her the heebie-jeebies. With its "Maybe this would have been shocking...in 1994!" tone and the line, "Some of these piercings have to hurt like hell, and the anesthetic eventually wears off," the article is dying to be wanked.

Enter this piece by BME's Shannon Larratt, who starts invoking wank before writing down the first word in the paragraph (The title, you ask? "Debra Darvick advocates mutilating babies (PS. She’s also a bigot.)") Not only is baby-mutilation invoked, but so is the Holocaust. It's perhaps the biggest sign of "Stop being on my side. You're making my side look bad!" I've noticed in awhile. I'm not even going to quote the rest of that article because the article itself, while it has a point in where somewhere, is just buried in splooge.

Actually, of all the body piercings I've had done, the one that hurt the most was my ear lobes. Maybe it was because I was seven at the time, but it's the only one I remember crying over. When I had my lip done (with no anesthetic, btw. I don't think that piercing/tattoo parlors are allowed to administer it) it was over so fast, I didn't even notice the pain.

Shannon Larratt needs to calm the fuck down, though.

Did you get your ears done with a gun, or piercing needle?

Because piercing guns = BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA. (Also, utterly unsterilizable.) Hence, they hurt like a motherfucker compared to anything except the lowest gauge needle piercing.

Having, uh, a very sensitive area pierced at 10g hurt less than getting my lobes done, man. I had blood streaming down my neck from that shit, and they had to hold me down from the first one.

A gun, wielded by a teenager with (I'm assuming) no training or experience beyond what she got at Claire's Boutique. And so, like you said, not only do they hurt like hell, they're more dangerous. It seems like half the kids who get their ears pierced this way end up with brutal infections, while those who get pierced by professionals in much more sensitive areas seem to end up fine.

*raises hand*

Got my ears pierced on two separate occasions, both times they got badly infected, after the second time I just gave up and decided that clip ons weren't that bad, and my I should start looking at pendants and rings.

go to a piercing salon and have them done if you ever think about it again. they're pretty sympathetic, and they do it properly.

Yep, me too. They were always infected, I finally let them grow closed and had them redone with a needle and they haven't bothered me since.

Ditto. (Except it was 14, not 10.) I was totally surprised by how little it hurt. The pain lasted for a second, and then I had the bleeding to deal with--and that only lasted for that day.

Also, Ms. Darwick seems old enough to remember a time when having pierced ears caused a commotion. So I'd say it's hypocritical, in that sense, to say you won't talk to a server because of where he or she is pierced.

(Of course, in my case, people like her will never know. Tee hee hee!)

It's hypocritical, but beyond that - shit, if someone is doing a good job at serving you, and they don't have head lice or open sores, it's tacky as hell to refuse their service just because of how they look. Just... tacky.

I've never had my ears piered, but I have had ancupuncture. I could barely feel the tiny, tiny needles going into the rest of my body, but when one went in my ear, it hurt. So I figure that, any peircing needle that can leave a hole would have to hurt like hell.

I've had my nose pierced. There's a moment of intense discomfort before the cartilage is breached, but then it's through and the endorphins kick in. No big deal. Piercing guns on ears hurt worse.

Body piercings are done with a hollow needle, btw. This remove a tiny tunnel of flesh where the jewelry will go instead of forcing metal in and expecting there to be room, so it doesn't hurt as much as having a solid needle of the same size poking you.

Very true but I think Debra Darwick needs a good smack upside the head as well.

I mean I can understand being freaked out by piercings, some really do look uncomfortable, but not letting someone wait on you because they have a facial piercing? Bitch please.

They both need a tall glass of 'Get the fuck over it'.

Oh, definitely. I just think that Larratt has a point buried underneath all the vitriol (circumcision is at least as barbaric as body piercing... perhaps even more so, since the infants don't have any choice in the matter) while Darwick is just being moronic. I can understand someone being squicked by body piercing since my mother practically had an aneurysm when I had my lip done, but she's taking it way too far. So there's a trend out there that she finds objectionable... so what? I *hated* those little shirts that said 'Angel' or 'Punk Chick' or whatever, but I wouldn't refuse to talk to someone because they happened to be wearing one.

Agreed on both counts.

Actually I'd be happy just to have the clerk's attention, lately it seems that bookstores are very reluctant to take my money. There are times I'm tempted to hop up down shouting 'look I have exact change, please wait on me'!

Call me prejudiced, but when I when I first met my backyard neighbor I took one look at her nose ring and thought, "Yay! This is a good sign...." Me, I look about as exciting as mayonnaise on white bread, so I could only hope I made a good impression in return. :)

... anaesthetic?

Who gets pierced under anaesthetic?

Shannon's kind of a troll without realizing it, though. I mean, in previous Publisher's Rings he's talked about the inevitability of a Matrix-like "rise of the machines" scenario, and how body piercing will help us bridge the gap between man and machine. He's very sincere and very well-meaning and occasionally makes some good points, but he's still kind of a hippie, and hence way totally into the subcultural overidentification/persecution complex thing.

It's all about accepting that we'll eventually become cyborgs, or some shit. I don't know; he's like Bill Joy - I can't even begin to take the nuances of his argument seriously, because the premise is such IRREDEEMABLE BULLSHIT. Shut up, guys, go learn more about neurology and cognitive science before you assume Moore's Law = HAL IS COMING.

Also, BME is starting to have some aspects of sleazy porn sites that I'm really not comfortable with, so I'm inclined to look sideways at the guy.

Word on the tattoos, yeah.

If he wants to prepare for the matrix, he should shave his head and fill his bathtub with cherry jello

I'm actually considering that now, just to pass the time.

Again, my cat flees, indignant, sprayed with cola.
Again, I need to windex my monitor.

Hoi.

They're both being dumb, however, in American culture piercing has no religious signifigance so I don't see how you can hold piercing and circumscision next to each other and cry foul. And now that I think about it, circumsicision doesn't always have a religious signifigance in America either, but apples and oranges.

Same with tatts, too. And most of the people I know who have either brands or cuttings - self included - have something that could be called a spiritual component to it, or at least a very powerful, personal emotional meaning.

Then there's the fact that the current very radical way of doing circumcision is a relatively recent change in Jewish custom brought about during the reign of a particularly whacked group of rabbis. Traditionally, just the tip of the foreskin was removed, not the entire thing; there were lots of debates about whether one should be able to "pass" amongst the Gentiles. Of course, bringing that up would require actually knowing what the fuck one is talking about and not just voicing the standard "OMG I DUN GEDDIT WANK!" knee-jerk contrarian reaction.

(Hi. Again.)

Well, I mean that it doesn't have a specific religious signifigance. Someone could have a cross earring and be a devout Christian and wear the cross because of it, but also only becaue they think it's pretty and not because they're particularly religious. I won't deny there's something spiritual about being pierced but it's not specifically religious. Your piercing doesn't make you Christian the way a circumsicion would make a boy Jewish. (Which is a sticky wicket in the US, because, as far as I know, most men have it done no matter what their religion is, but from what I know of other countries this isn't generally the case)

I read that article today and it annoyed me, but I blew it off. But yeah, I have to agree, anyone who espouses circumcision has no right criticizing what a consenting adult does to his/her own body.

I think my favorite part of the BME article is when he got Debra Darwick's cell # from her SON. Ha ha ha!

That's what she gets for ritually mutilating his penis, I guess.
