So, on LJ, there's a fun community devoted to the slashing of John Kerry and John Edwards. It's a joke. But you know, fangirls like slash.

The owner of the comm doesn't like fangirls. She also doesn't like people enjoying her joke too much. She demonstrates this by throwing a hissy fit and handing the comm off to the first person who'll take it.

I'm just thinking, "How could she not know this would get so big?" Seriously.

DUDE. You just co-opted me! I was about to post this - mind you, probably elsewhere being amused about the MsA reference, but still...

I'm just thinking, "How could she not know this would get so big?" Seriously.

Augh! My thoughts exactly.

And I'm just an Australian totally envying the fact that you get interesting slashy politicians and we get John Howard!

LOL You could always post it on FW. My friend says it counts as fandom. ;)

It does, doesn't it? After all, once things have enough fangirls it's inevitable. But I might just leave it and frolic around here. Don't really need another post! :)

D'you know how long has that big obnoxious flashing text been in the userinfo there?? O.o I could swear it wasn't there the other day...

Well, now she's moved on to "all fanfiction is embarrassing."

I don't get why you'd spend a ton of time on a hobby you find embarrassing, but I guess that's just me.

And she seems to mean "I wouldn't want to talk to my mother about it, so it's embarrassing."

I wouldn't talk to my mother about fanfiction because she wouldn't be terribly interested. Does that make me embarrassed?

*nods* I wouldn't talk to my mother about fanfiction because first I'd have to explain "I write", and then I'd have to explain "fandom", and THEN I'd have to explain what the Internet is. Considering that the last time she knew I was a fan of something was when I put a giant Duran Duran poster on my closet door in 1985, that conversation would take *much* too long. ;)

My mom knows what anime is, as she's the one who got me INTO it (hello watching Astro Boy and Speed Racer with me) but as for explaining slash...she'd be all like 'dude, so what?' What I read or write = mom is ambivalent, aside from reccing good books.

I talk to my mother about it. She read my comics when I was still buying and agreed with me about the OTPness of Gambit/Courier and that Xavier and Magneto so had a thing. She's also volunteered to watch Nsync interviews with me and learned how to tell them all apart, then asked me which ones were my favourite slash pairings. She didn't agree with some, but with my then-favourite she was all 'oh yeah, I can see that'.

When Fox8 was showing Buffy marathons we'd have family time and watch two days of back-to-back Buffy episodes in our pyjamas. Plus, she's always up for a discussion of the serious philosophical points of Batman and the ways that Star Trek changed our culture.

I have the coolest mother ever.

My dad is that cool. He isn't particularly interested in slash (though he's well aware of it) but general fannish discussion, yes. He's read some of my gen fanfic. He's read a slash parody filk I wrote, though that was because he stumbled onto it on the web somewhere. He was amused.

My mother knows about fandom, and fanfic, and so on. She doesn't know about slash because she's way homophobic and I save my arguing with her for discussions of my personal life, and we don't talk about fandom because she just isn't interested. So I say things like "I'm happy because I'm writing a lot more these days," and she says "That's great, dear," just like she tells me about her friend's hip operation and I say "oh, that's too bad."

My mom knows I write fanfiction, but nothing about the slashy variety. I don't think she's ever recovered from when I explained 'anime' to her. She believes "cartoons" are for kids aged 2 to 10. *shrug*

My mom stumbled across my slash back in '96 when Deja News came out. She was testing it for the library she worked in and used my name because she knew I was active on USENET. Having her learn that the fanfiction I'd told her that I wrote was actually NC-17 related mansex was a lot less troubling than realizing she also discovered that I hung out on alt.sex.bondage although being a nice reticent WASPy person she never mentioned that.

She won't read my smut because: "which would be harder to deal with: reading your daughter's smut and liking it? Or having to tell her you don't like it?" She does read my parodies and the occasional gen piece.

Every once in a while I get this "I wish you'd write more things that I could read" thing from her.

I told my mom about slash about seven years ago, when she asked what the hell I was doing in the basement for so many hours and why her phone line was always tied up. She ended up reading one of my NC-17 stories. Luckily, she was only mildly traumatized and eventually made a full recovery.

Several years ago, Dad found an X-files parody piece (of Green Eggs and Ham) I'd written. He did recover nicely from the trauma, though he used to give me Dr. Seuss books as presents (we're an odd family) and he's stopped that now.

I believe we've now established that he knows I write it, he knows I read it, he knows that's why I squeal and squeak at times when I'm watching TV with him, but we do not discuss it in depth because he is Not Interested In the Man-Sex. And I'm not telling him I've written femslash, because I'd be afraid he'd read it. *g*

Well, when people were making slashy jokes at MetaFilter and at Instapundit, for crying out loud, completely independent of the comm, what the heck did she expect? If she didn't start it, someone else would have.

Still you think she'd be happy her comm was such a hit.

Didn't read the entire thing, but I got the impression she didn't think that many folks would pop out of the woodwork and make the comm so huge. She doesn't want to mod huge comms, so she promptly "stomped out" in as wanky a manner as possible cause she's a drama queen and everyone loves her for it. :D :D :D

Like I said, she did it in the wankiest manner possible. Her humor doesn't translate well if you don't regularly read her journal and her writing, which is also why I said she most likely had no intention to mod a huge comm. The fact that she jumped ship so quickly--wasn't the comm made last week?--cinches it.

I'm surprised I can still see the funny since I haven't followed her journal for a few months.

If you don't mind abrasive humor. For example, her circle of friends --which includes [info]mooncalf and [info]chaobell--like to say "your mom" a lot. (I.e. "I did your mom last night." "I did yours last week." etc.)
