Theri-wank. Or, "you don't know what you're talking about, so I'm going to edumacate you here".
Dunno if you remember my last post here regarding the Therianthropy comm at LJ, but it's not really relevant here, outside the fact it's the same comm.

OK, enough bush-beating-around.

the_ash, a long-time lurker at Therianthropy, decides to delurk long enough to write up his "All about me" post to the comm.

In it he states that he is both a wolf and a black panther (of the leopard variety), and for the most part, things go well, with the usual "welcome to the comm!" comments.

That is, until ladymalen decides to educate the OP on panthers, asking him if he knows that "panthers and leopards are a different species" or not.

It devolves from there, with ladymalen giving us a lesson in biology and the OP pretty much saying what's on my mind: this is a stupid argument and there's no real reason to be arguing period.

It's times like this when I'm glad for the fact that I just lurk there, because when you get right down to it, they're arguing over the animals people feel a kinship with.

Oy....

Though watching this makes me want both a "bitch please" and "Stop being on my side" icon - both of them suits this situation here...

Arguments like that make me want to turn in my Therianthropy Club membership and pretend these people don't exist.

Dude, don't make fun of this guy for not knowing the difference between a panther and a leopard.

Make fun of him for liking the movie "The Island of Dr. Moreau".

And later:

[info]ladymalen: I fight hard enough to be taken seriously as a pagan and a were.

BWAHAAAAHAHAHAHAA.

Yes. He apparently knows the difference, so focus on something that IS funny to laugh at.

Apparently she's not fighting hard enough. >:P

I'll take her seriously as a pagan all she wants. But until I see her sprout a tail I'm keeping my WTFBBQ sauce handy. :)

I'm just waiting for someone to note that this is one of those species that gets reclassified as seperate species/subspecies/seperate genus/species about every ten years or so. I really wouldn't doubt it.

And yes, in the name of all that is good and holy, how does not knowing what the full taxonomic classification of your whatever-the-hell mean you're OMG POSER? Pick on the people that come in claiming they've been chosen by their god to "kill teh ev0l humenz" or something instead. It's not like there's a dearth of them.

Oh, and I love this one:

Calling a leopard a 'black panther' is a misnomer. Just as calling a domestic cat a 'Maine Coon' is one as cats are incapable of breeding with racoons.

*blink* Just like calling a domestic dog a "Pharoah hound" is ridiculous, as dogs are incapable of breeding with Pharoahs. What The Fuck??

This idiot ever hear of a breed?

The cat family has a tendency to be classified and reclassified over and over again. I've seen it having three genera, and as many as eight or nine. It just amuses me here that they spend so much time haggling over something taxonomists can't agree with.

And yes, in the name of all that is good and holy, how does not knowing what the full taxonomic classification of your whatever-the-hell mean you're OMG POSER? YES.

That I'd enjoy seeing: the therians go on a tear in regards to the mundane humans - conveniently forgetting their mortal shell in this particular life (though that'll probably be a wank magnet of epic proportions).

Would it also be pedantic to point out that scientific binominal nominclature, in all likelihood, has about zero bearing one the nature of one's animal soul, if one does indeed believe to possess one?

I think that would be a wonderful sort of topic to explore, and if you ever bring it up somewhere, I'd like to see it.

Unfortunately, knowing myself, that probably means it is. :3

It's truly bizarre how she says:
Cougar: Felis Concolor = PANTHER!!1
Jaguar: Panthera Onca and Leopard: Panthera pardus = NOT panther, despite their current genus actually being being 'panther'. And the leopard in particular's name essentially saying 'panther panther'.

And she sees no hint in this that she may be wrong.

Panther is from the ancient latin. I can pretty much guarantee that the Romans weren't talking about pumas, you know? Them being well-known for not making it to the Americas. And the 'pard' in 'leopard' comes from the singular of panther that's right there in the species name as an enourmous clue.

Using panther for both species is a misnomer. It's just that it's going the other way.

And the replies are frozen so I can't wank along! Aargh! The pressure! I just might explode.

Heh. I was tempted to point out that the term "panther" predated the arrival of the settlers in North America by a couple millennia, and that they most certainly weren't thinking about cougars when they came up with the term "panther" ("panther", if anyone cares, means "all-beast" in Latin or Greek (now I'm confused)).

And the 'pard' in 'leopard' comes from the singular of panther that's right there in the species name as an enourmous clue.

The "pard" in "leopard" has to do with the belief that the leopard was the bastard offspring of an adulterous lioness and the pard. There's been some debate as to what animal a "pard" is, but it's likely that the "pard" is the cheetah, given that the leopard supposedly got its build from the lion, so the spots had to have come from another animal entirely.

But sadly, comments are frozen in that thread so we'll just have to stew silently over this.

I read that 'pardos' was the male singular of panther, but I could be wrong. Or it might mean cheetah. Either way, not a puma, so at least we can sit here and stew certain that we're right and she's a wanker. And hope that someone asks her to explain the difference between the different types of tiger, that'd be good for a laugh.

There's nothing quite as amusing as someone criticizing other people for not doing their research when she hasn't done her own.
