Bwee! Con-wank!
Ah, anime conventions. They're such wonderful, smelly places full of opportunities to spend your hard-earned money on Japanese goodies. While these all may be fun and smiles on the outside...they really get interesting once you get on the inside.

Take this little juicy tidbit, for example. This is but a sample of what usually goes on behind those folding con walls.

LadyRaven is the con chair for Kamikaze Con here in Houston. Its first con will be held in March next year.

LadyRaven feels like it would be a good idea to advertise her con on the cosplay.com message boards. Fair enough. She had a cosplay event to talk about. So she posts this message, with the subject line "Kamikaze Con, Houston's Largest Anime Convention".

This, of course, upsets delegates from at least one other about-to-happen con in the area, namely Cherry from Oni-Con. This con will have its first in late October.

Many of Cherry's posts have been "[ Removed by Cherry due to un-needed drama ]", but the first one is conveniently quoted in the reply, where she says "weird how you can be the biggest when it just so happens Oni-Con is".

Several people speak up to back-up what Cherry said, most noteably being Trinity, who quickly left the scene shortly after to get changed into her snappy pinstripe dress-suit. You'll find out why shortly.

LadyRaven finally explains by saying she counted Kamikaze Con as being the "biggest" because of a mini-event held late last year where they hosted Yoshiyuki Tomino and had a conference of sorts with 500 attendees. (Tomino is the creator of the Gundam series.)

Cherry fires back with then Chibicon is the biggest, yo. Chibicon is the smaller version of O-Chibicon, whose first three-day con is next weekend. I've personally attended the last four or five Chibicons, and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt, if they had more than 200 people there for each of them, I will happily remove my hard drive and dine upon it with a spot of fine red wine.

This goes on for six more pages. Highlights include:

"Wasn't Kamikaze Con responsible for that cool grown-up party that I wasn't allowed to go to *tantrum* just couldn't make it to?"

Someone save this poor, innocent soul before it is tainted beyond recognition.

MENTHU comes in with a healthy dose of accusations, threats, and law suits!

Cherry evokes her personal internet lawyer! And she actually shows up! (Complete with Law and Order's DON DON sound.)

And then, Cherry does some pseudo name-dropping.

Eventually, the con chair for Oni-Con, moonglaive, posts to tell everyone to knock it off already.

But they don't begin to stop until the general populace is reduced to screaming.

It's worth noting that not once did any O-Chibicon (the other Houston con having its first con next weekend) head-people show up in this. It's probably for the best, they need to be working on their con more than squibbling with people about semantics on a cosplay forum.

Finally, after much tribulation, the admin cometh with the smackdown. Verily.

..."Kamikaze" is one of the dumbest names I've heard for a con yet.

But it sounds Japanese, so it must be cool!

Well sure, "divine wind" sounds cool. But then again a lot of people associate it with the suicide fighter planes in WWII, so I dunno about that being a good name.

Reminds me of the con Portland will have in September--Kumoricon.

If I recall, 'kumori' means 'cloudy'.

*quick lookup on online dictionary*

kumori = cloudiness; cloudy weather; shadow

...

"Shadow Con" isn't that bad of a name actually, although the cloudiness one would be more appropriate for the weather I think.

No, really.
It's right now.

If it had anything to do with the con, it would work fine as a name, but...yeah, suicide planes.

the con I work on has such a better name omg.

For my two cents:

None of these names is good. "Kamikaze Con" is ridiculously culturally ignorant, "Oni-Con" is just lame, and "O-ChibiCon," while cute, screams of "we don't know any Japanese but are faking it to be kewlies."

...I can't believe I'm about to defend O-Chibicon...

But O-Chibicon is spawned from Chibicon, thus named because the meetings they have every two months are indeed "mini" conventions. Horridly cute, but...bleh.

I'm alright with Oni-Con, but Kamikaze Con? I just say they're smart for saying "Con" instead of "Kon".

Chibicon itself seems like an acceptable name for a group of miniature conventions. "O-Chibicon" is a sort of sloppy way to signify a "bigger" one, though -- it's more a term of politeness than anything... eh, sorry, ranting a tad. I need to stop doing this.

Oh , geez.. It’s really quite embarrassing when someone I know of and have met in person on a few occasions shows up in a wank report.

Not to say that I’m surprised or anything…

Reasons why your icon rocks:

Wait... both Cons have never actually happened, yet they're bitching about which one is the "bigger" one?

At least they'll get to find out which staff has the most drama queens right off the bat.

Yeah, that's the part that surreals the hell out of me. None of the cons at play here have ever hosted a full con, and one of them has never held any kind of event, so what the fuck?

(Also, why three cons suddenly organizing in Houston? Is there something in the water?)

The drama is beyond me. I don't understand why we can't all get along like the little anime fans we are.

...who am I kidding, not-affiliated-to-cons anime fans can't get along.

That started off being "non-con anime fans"...

As for why there's three in such a short amount of time...Oni-Con started being planned 2-3 years ago, but I don't think O-Chibicon or Kamikaze Con have been planning that long. From what I gather, it all stems from two anime clubs in universities here in town, the whole fracas has gone back over a decade, and someone only just now has been brave enough to have a con.

Which is just friggin' ludicrous, considering ADV is based here. Geez.

Ahhh, I think I get it now. It's a shame there's so much clashing, but what can you do?

(I hope the other two cons have their act together. Two or three years' planning seems like the bare minimum to get a foundation for future connage.)

Wait...I actually know Lady Raven in real life. Seems she was one of the founding members of the anime club at school, and is back in the neighborhood because she's working on her masters or something.

Furthermore, I was kinda-sorta there at the Tomino thing...I helped clean it up on Friday night, and was going to help with management on Saturday, but wound up not getting up that night until 7:30p.

And the wank around the two cons is terrible. Trust me, I've seen it live and in person, as it's all over my campus' local anime community. But that's a post for [info]fw_offline more than here. Seems that people with both cons have been ripping down the others' posters. And of course, the local anime club is caught in the middle, having its stuff defaced by both sides. Not fun for those of us who aren't involved on either side. Frankly, my money's on both cons failing.

yeah i know what you mean, buti've only heard of one con doing all the nasty shit while the other con tries to defend it's ass. from some rumors that i heard, both cons once was one con.. till something or another happen.. and walla two cons.. and then came a third con that just wishes it could compete.. but sucked ass.

sometimes i wish both of these cons would try to better themselves over the other rather than talk shit right from the start.
