The Little Cinder Girl Meets The Bookyoucrew
Here's a tale of literary wank. 'Tis small, but wanky and bite sized and tasty with mustard.

Once upon a time, Cinderjewel joined a community called thebookyoucrew. Bookyoucrew is a community that rates "your literary taste and knowledge (or lack thereof)." When you join, you must post a list of your top 20 books and then, they rate you.

So, Cinderjewel posts her list. It includes books written by Anne Rice, Laura Ingalls Wilder, J.K. Rowling and Alexander Dumas. The Bookyoucrew doesn't take kindly to the little cinder girl and give comments such as "this one is called "gag me with a spoon"
and "This list isn't worth voting on."

As per community rules, the poster is not actually allowed to comment until they've been accepted into the community. Unable to lie idly by, Cinderjewel fires back in her lj, not once, not twice, but thrice.

Will anyone live happily ever after here?

Edit: In her latest post, Cinderjewel writes "I'm ever so grateful no reported that whole epidone to FW. I would have been mortified, althought at the sime time, seriously amused"
Think we should break it to her? ;)

Edit 2: After the wank hits the fan, the moderator feels the need to address the unwashed masses crew and warn off all the literary peons here.

Edit 3: [info]ladybirdsleeps would like to pick your brains. She wants to know what Wankers' top 20 books are. Go here to read all about it and add your own choices.

Hahaha, I've heard some wanky stories about this girl before; I'm so not surprised.

A rating community for literary taste? Gah!

This is why I love the internet. So people like that can have their own space to be...like that... while I can be elsewhere. And they CAN'T SEEEE MEEEEE!!!!

Can't say I care much for her reading material either, but the community members? Get a room, people.

There are some good books on that list, and I must admit a liking of Star Wars and Little house books. Not that I'd submit a list with those on it to a comm like that.

also, now you're really pissing me off with this list. plus the entirely unwarranted indignation in your own jouranl.

So the idea here is that she applies, they mock her, and she's not allowed to say anything *anywhere*? *sporfles*

OMG! She's (semi-coherently) pissed off in her own journal! Teh horror!

God. If there's a ratings community that doesn't devolve into totally unwarranted cooler-than-thou, I don't know what it is. That said, I understand the temptation to submit--you just kind of want to know if you would make it.

(I'm really tempted to try this one now, even though--I know, I know.)

I just applied to the BYC and found that they were intelligent and very well-read. Of course, I expected that if they didn't like my taste, they would insult me; when the equivalent music community, fuckyoucrew, did the same, I didn't whine about it. Because they're gonna insult someone who uses up 25% of her top 20 books on Laura Ingalls Wilder. She has deleted the comment I made in her journal - which was, actually, constructive criticism and not insulting. She just has major problems being criticized in any way, shape, or form, and I find it amusing that she's spent four posts in her journal talking about how NOT offended she is.

Already I've found my tastes and a bit of a genre rut challenged, and found several excellent recommendations. The collective brain in there is very well-read and challenging, and I didn't find it pretentious at all. The points on which they've differed, I haven't felt insulted; much of enduring literature is subjective. Unless it's the colloquial use of the word "pretentious," which has come to mean "people who are smarter than me and thus somehow offensive." If they were pretentious, they'd ask for "top five Derrida-inspired works of free verse poetry by a Canadian author with one leg." (I will grant that the knee-jerk reaction to LIW seems a bit much, but that's probably just because it was 25% of the list.) They're looking for people open to variety.

I don't expect to get in; that wasn't why I applied. I was hoping to get out of it exactly what I've already gotten: a little literary challenge.

But, Goddammit, the people in this group are some of the most intelligent and well-read people you'll ever have the pleasure to meet; people who flat-out love literature.

People who, nonetheless, cannot spell the word prerogative, and appear to be utterly defeated by the mysteries of the space bar.

Of course rebutting isn't allowed by the applicant until s/he's accepted! The BYC must tear them to bits first so the applicant can't say anything back. While it appears that cinderwhatsis can't fight her way out of a wet paper bag with an AK-47, still I'd think they'd let her come in and defend herself. I mean [info]fandom_wank and all its children allow that much.

Why does the word "literary" make me want to fall asleep? Because it's sitting right next to "pretentious" at the Table of Boring.

...but since when has that ever stopped me? So let me get this straight. There is a group of people who think they are the be all and end all of literacy becuase they know better. And here I thought that the purpose of literature was to expand your thinking. Take you places you can't otherwise go. Way to turn people off of reading.

What I can't get over is that hating Vonnegut is in the userinfo. The userinfo!

This whole thing, the comments included, is so lovingly wanky that I'm beside myself. Hooray to all!

What is "literature"? What is "a good book"?
[info]moonjaguar
2004-08-07 07:59 pm UTC (link)
To get asslancingly technical, those pamphlets about diabetes and Parkinson's at the doctor's office are literature. I've found very useful ones about asthma or epilepsy that I've given to people that explain better than I can about my own conditions (one might call them "good") and I've found ones that were just plain advertisements for the latest drugs and not very informative or else full of medicalese and not useful for laymen (one might call them "not good"). Not exactly entertaining reading, no.

Books... what's a good book? I think that's relative. For me a book has to grab my attention and hold it. I don't care who it's by, if it's someone people have been name-dropping for cool points for I don't know how many years or someone who's been in the crap bin. Anne Rice bored me senseless because I was trying to find a point in all the rambling. Jack Kerouac to me was like word vomit, no reason behind it. I love Stephen King but we parted ways at From A Buick 8 (is that about when his books started being published unedited? I thought, something is just wonk here).I only read his earlier works.

Some folks like Kurt Vonnegut. I've never read him so I can't form an opinion. I actually like Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series, especially the Wisconsin arc because I know the area it was set in, same with Maureen Daly's "Seventeenth Summer" as far as location (and my mother grew up in the same general area the book was set in and thought that Angie and her sisters were such sheltered innnocents). I don't care if they're "kids' books" or "old fashioned" or if people are going to mock me mercilessly.

Same with the little old ladies who gobble Harlequin and Silhouette romances like candy, or read Danielle Steel's formulaic "the pretty house, the handsome man, there were flowers everywhere" novels. Predictable dreck in my opinion but I figure, they like what they like, I like what I like. Apparently the publishers and authors are doing something right because they're raking in the bucks.

Good books? All in the eye of the beholder. What's great reading for one sucks for another. Even in fanfic, some folks rave about an author and others find that author an awful.
