rhyein. I did, at least. We were friends my freshman year of college, until I realized she was a hurtful bitch.

And even I'm gaping at the idea that it was faked. I watched this girl mourn. I was with her at the memorial service given by our university's president, though we weren't friends by then. It never crossed my mind that her tears weren't real.

I really hope this isn't true. If it is, it's way beyond anything I ever expected, even from her.

I also know this girl. She talked about her friend long before Sept. 11. Some things seemed strange about him, but I never questioned her. She said he spoke 17 languages, his parents were really old (his father died some time before Sept 11, I remember her telling me).

I knew she had problems, but if she made him up...that's even weirder than anything I thought. I remember the day it happened, she told me how worried about him she was, cause he lived two blocks away from the towers. That night we went to a restaurant with a bunch of people and she composed a letter to him on a napkin.

And now I wonder if she really thought he existed...because it was an elaborate story. But it's not hard to get two instant messenger screen names and two accounts on a message board. And god, people are so willing to defend her on this...

I should ask her for a photo of him. I think it's odd now, looking back, that she never had a photograph of her "best friend."

After Sept 11, I invited her to my house for a weekend. I knew she was feeling horrible and I was feeling pretty sick over it too. Now I feel sick for a different reason.

I knew her in real life, and I never knew...dang. This is weirding me out.

Good grief. Someone did the exact same (alleged :)) thing on one of my mailing lists the *day* of 9/11, claiming to be a friend of a subscriber and posting from their account because they were worried about their "friend."

The thing that boggled me, once the hoax was revealed, wasn't so much that anyone would do it--I've run into enough Munchausen crazies over the internet to know that there are no lengths to which some people will not lie for sympathy--but that clearly the *first* thing this person thought of when the WTC collapsed was how to use it to milk fake sympathy for themselves. That takes a kind of swift and instinctive calculation that creeps the bejeezus out of me. I mean, like, euw.

I knew her, too, for a few years. She is weird, but I know that it's easy for lies to get out of hand. I have had several experiences with this. It's so easy to get wrapped up in an elaborate lie. They have cartoon and sitcom episodes about it all the time.

I might add that she doesn't walk around begging for attention about this or anything else ever.

She has problems, but doesn't everyone?

Real or not, it doesn't matter. She's still a person.

I knew her. Supposedly, I knew Anthony as well: we had exchanged e-mails before the World Trade Center incident happened. I am completely shocked and disgusted, and I am appalled by her supposed 'apology', which is probably one of the biggest sittings of pretentious bullshit I've ever been faced with in my life.
