I also know this girl. She talked about her friend long before Sept. 11. Some things seemed strange about him, but I never questioned her. She said he spoke 17 languages, his parents were really old (his father died some time before Sept 11, I remember her telling me).

I knew she had problems, but if she made him up...that's even weirder than anything I thought. I remember the day it happened, she told me how worried about him she was, cause he lived two blocks away from the towers. That night we went to a restaurant with a bunch of people and she composed a letter to him on a napkin.

And now I wonder if she really thought he existed...because it was an elaborate story. But it's not hard to get two instant messenger screen names and two accounts on a message board. And god, people are so willing to defend her on this...

I should ask her for a photo of him. I think it's odd now, looking back, that she never had a photograph of her "best friend."

After Sept 11, I invited her to my house for a weekend. I knew she was feeling horrible and I was feeling pretty sick over it too. Now I feel sick for a different reason.

I knew her in real life, and I never knew...dang. This is weirding me out.
