I dunno...all I'm getting from this is that Adobe has studied its history. Think kleenex, aspirin, xerox, et cetera. Adobe is just protecting its trademark. Hell, Coca-Cola went to court over that, and they lost the rights to "cola" because a) it was the name of the plant; and b) they hadn't protected it aggressively enough. They won on "Coke," however (and, obviously, "Coca-Cola") and so no other product can use the very recognizable term "coke" to refer to their product. It's a sensible move, especially when stiff competition arises (in this case, Pepsi), and by doing so, they avoided the fate of other products that became genericized and thus less-identified with the original supplier. It's a good bet that if a search engine service similar to Google arises and provides real competition, Google will take steps to do the same trademark protection.

In theory, they won the "Coke" trademark over other companies. However, I find it extremely amusing that in their hometown of Atlanta, the word "Coke" is used to describe any carbonated beverage among the locals. Adobe can bitch all they want, but it looks like photoshop has become a generic verb among the populace already. The lines have blurred, dammit!

Which is true, but people still refer to "Coke" versus "Pepsi," so it's not a total loss for Coca-Cola just yet.

Somehow I doubt that.

I dunno...you don't think they got so rich selling a bloody soft drink, do ya? Yeah, the Coca-Cola Corporation has dark secrets, let me tell you. [/end conspiracy theory]

Well, you gotta admit, it's hard to sue illegal drug dealers for using your trademarked name. Bet it would be fun to watch though.
