On the childfree USENET group, someone insinuates that those childfree folks who have pets are just substituting one non-housebroken burden for another.

Watch the fur fly!

Because a cat is every bit as demanding as a child.

My parents recently acquired a puppy--the only dog they've ever had in their adult lives, and a big change from cats. For a variety of reasons, much of the burden of taking care of her has fallen on me--midnight bathroom trips, pills, grooming, vet trips, walks, cleaning up messes, etcetera--and I asked my mother how this compared to taking care of a human infant. She just laughed at me. ^^;;

And no can actually love or care for an animal, and if they do it must because they're trying to compensate for not having a child in their lives.

For years I thought I had cats because I *like* cats, I had no idea I was sekritly pining for a child.

But, can you not hear the call of the woooomb whenever you look upon a small, fluffy animal?!

Yeah, me either.

call of the woooomb

*snerkle* Well, my guy cat does get a fairly impressive howl going when he rillyrilly wants me to open the door. Otherwise, I gotta say no as well.

When someone invents a warm, fluffy baby that eats cat food, uses a litterbox, and never asks "why?", then she'll have a point.

One whose college education you will never have to pay for.

And perhaps most importantly, one that you can legally spay or neuter.

Actually, if a baby can get its hands on cat food, it'll probably eat it anyway.

I frequently ate dog buiscuts as a child. Only recently have I discovered that people look at me funny when I bring this up.

I have to admit I enjoyed them mostly for the "I can't believe you're eating MY treat" looks the dog would give me when I ate them.

We never gave our dogs buiscuts, so I had to steal from other people's houses. I think it was the four-year-old's equivalent of a drug addiction.

*giggle* I used to work at a vet clinic, as a kennel assistant. Or as I like to call it "animal orderly". (aka cleaner of nasty, nasty cages.)

The vet has two young daughters, who, ages ago, I had to baby sit. (Ugh. I hated baby-sitting them. I would have gladdly just cleaned cages, but noooo.) Being at a vet clinic, there are jars with dog buiscuts in them in the exam rooms and stuff and it's always funny to see people's reactions when one or both of the kids would wander in during an exam to get a dog buiscut. XD

The guy may have had a good point or two--although I for one was a bit offended that he was implying it was stupid to cry when a pet dies. Hey, dogs and cats are complex animals, with personalities, and over the years we get to love the little buggers...isn't that worth a tear or two when it's gone?

For the record, I have both cats and children, and...um...yeah....

Mom used to have a dog named Babe. Mom had had Babe since she was 17. When Babe died, I was pretty young, but still old enough to remember it. Mom had had Babe for a very long time. We were all sad when Babe died.

crying when it [the pet] dies

Dear God! You don't have to be substituting your pet for a child to be sad and cry when they die! I love cats. I have two cats. I do not like it when the concepts of death and cats are used together.
