"god i hate preps theyre so ignorant. @_@"
Because if it isn't customers_suck, it's the cutters. God bless the internet.

So there's this community on Livejournal that is against the act of self-injury via cutting - creatively named anticutting. Honestly? They're kinda wanky in and of themselves. Most of their posts are limited to bitching about how much they hate the attention-seeking emo/goth teenies and how funny it would be to see some of them actually throw themselves into traffic, blah blah blah fishcakes.

Well, purdygirl has something to say about that. So does her sockpuppet, gothgirlofdeath.

Troll? Most likely. Since she demonstrates that she's perfectly capable of speaking something besides chatspeak pidgin.

Some point and laugh, some yawn at the troll, and some take it seriously. It's a small wank so far, but good for a quick chuckle.

EDIT: Yep. Troll.

Back in my day they were 'Preppies'
People who's 'uniform' consisted of Izod shirts, khakis and docksiders with pastel-ish sweaters thrown over their shoulders.

I suspect this probably refers to something different.

These days "preps" refers to your typical "popular" type people, I think. (You know, the ones that shop at Abercrombie & Fitch and so forth.) It's sort of become hybrid with the "jock" label and...whatever the attendant label for girls is.

Preps, of course, are the sworn enemies of goths and emo kids, hence the reason it was brought up, I think, since they're sort of bashing the gothy/emo type. (Or at least the goths and emo-types that cut...)

yep. At least when I was in school, which is just about ten years now.

Then/there it also included "the kids who are well-dressed, get good grades, have a bit of money and no visible angst." WASPs, basically.

Future yuppies. Popular, but popular because they bought all of the nice clothes. Or something like that. "Prep" is one of those words that changes meaning everytime someone else uses it as each person defines it differently. It does usually have negative conotations, though.

I've always thought of them as kind of yuppies in training. Usually from an upper-middle class family, does lots of school activities, good grades, popular, etc.

But nowadays it's more like a catch-all for "those mean girls in high school that made fun of me!!"

Ugh, I can't go look. I've been in too many cutter wanks on other message boards. As soon as I see the word "cutter" on the screen, I just feel dread.

It's always going to be full of assholes who say, "Down the road, not across the street!" or otherwise indicate that they think - sometimes quite seriously - that suicide is a good option for anyone who cuts, "so there'll be less idiots like that in the world." They're also quick to state that no one who cuts has "real" problems, and that anyone who hurts themself is just a whiner and an attention-whore.

>.<

(Personally, I've known several cutters, and I've never met one who didn't have "real" problems, whether obvious "biggies" or something hidden.)

Then, of course, the cutters who haven't admitted that they have a problem and need help (a little like anorexics in denial, I always think) show up to "prove [the assholes] right!" They really are just whiners and attention-whores who deserve to die! Self-injury isn't a compulsive behaviour some people struggle with, they just need to turn off their goth music!

If that was wanky, I apologize, but I'll stop now, since I feel sick.

The thing is, I know cutters too,b ut I can understand making an anti-cutting community...unfortunately, cutting has become a status symbol and too many kids use it as a source of pity. They post pictures of their "cuts" on the internet grabbing for attention, which disturbs and enrages me because it trivializes those who are real cutters with actual dysfunctions. No cutter I've ever met has been proud of it, nor have they flashed it around as some sort of angst currency to validate themselves. Cutters try their hardest to hide it from the world and from themselves. I cannot help but get angry at these people who simply use it as an aesthetic...it's sick.

One of my absolute closest friends in the world is a cutter (and takes great pains to make sure no one knows about it; I found out on accident), so I try not to get involved in that period. :|

Personally I'm of the opinion that anyone who cuts, no matter what the reason, has some kind of unresolved issue. But that could just be me.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

[info]beandelphiki

Cutters try their hardest to hide it from the world and from themselves.

This is just what I'm talking about. That simply isn't always true. I know one girl who flashed her scars all the time. Of course she was trying to get attention - she had huge problems, and no one was helping her. Sure, going and talking to a counselor would have been a better choice, but at 15, not everyone thinks that is a viable option. (Especially if adults have taught you not to trust them.) You're still a kid. Hell, plenty of adults wait for rock bottom.

And the internet is ANONYMOUS. Plenty of people admit to things on the internet they would never admit out loud, in real life, because you are safe on the internet, and can get anonymous feedback. There are probably several hundred people right now who've seen me post about how I used to cut, but my family doesn't know, and neither do my friends. I'm sure the kids posting pictures are looking for reassurance that they don't have a problem, or that they aren't the only ones and can pretend nothing's wrong.

The psychiatric literature may state that cutters work their hardest to hide it at all costs, but you know what? That literature is several years out of date with the current societal trends. And yes, I agree that it's become something of "status symbol" for kids to cut. It's the same thing in some circles with anorexia, with girls egging each other on. Self-injury used to be something that started primarily in women in their twenties, and now we have men doing it, boys and girls doing...and it starts younger. Rather than roll our eyes at it as if the "status symbol cutters" aren't doing something seriously worrisome, I'm concerned why this isn't raising more alarms.

Now, I'm sure most of those "status symbol cutters" will eventually leave the behaviour behind, and you may be right in saying that what they were doing was trivializing those with "more serious" issues. But some kids might start off just doing it to fit in with their friends...and it can become an addictive behaviour and turn into something very serious, and potentially life-threatening.
