Bloody Vikings!
estarcollector: Dude! I saw Odin during a subjective spiritual experience!

mrphaethon: Dude! No, you didn't! You neglected to take pictures of and copious notes about your subjective spiritual experience which I don't believe you had, no sir!

estarcollector: *is sad*

mrphaethon: There is such a thing as right and wrong, and damn it if I'm not right!

That Phaethon guy just makes my head hurt. He doesn't seem to get that finding religious people and then saying "your religion is stupid! it's all false" *is proselytizing.* Atheist witnessing is no less annoying than Jehovah Witness witnessing.

(btw, am I the only one having a problem with JF? NO icons are loading. It's very odd.)

I can't see anyone's at all including mine. This is like playing "show me yours and I'll show you mine" in total darkness.

Well, anyway, ZR knows about the problem and is working on it, so with any luck this will be cleared up soon.

Atheist witnessing is no less annoying than Jehovah Witness witnessing.

Word. I don't really like the "have you been saved?" stuff, but the "you went to sunday school? You must be so scarred by the delusional bigots!" goes over about as well.

Especially when ya don't know where the other person stands. The weirdest experience I ever had was this girl who assumed I was an athiest because she was an athiest, and we had other non-religious common interests. It was like:

"I like Pocky. You like Pocky. I like Spam. Therefore, you must also like Spam!"

Uh. No.

I had to explain to her that the constant assertion that religion is a learning disorder and/or proof of intellectual inferiority, might offend some people. This was late-breaking news.

I like the part where her vision is more credible because she was bullied at school and her adult self was forged in the flames of suffering!

God, what an asshole.

One of my coworkers says that Jesus came to her and laid His hand upon her head when she was in the hospital after having a double mastectomy due to breast cancer and told her everything was going to be all right; she credits Jesus with her quick recovery and continuing remission. She firmly, totally, completely believes that the son of God came to her and led her away from death. Did it happen? Was it her subconscious, souped up on morphine and a lifetime of Women's Wednesday Night Bible Study, throwing up an image that would give her the strength and optimism to believe she could recover? Who knows. Asking her, "So, your Jesus. Did he look like Jim Caviezel, or was it more of a historically-accurate Semitic Jesus? Did he have a halo? How about the stigmata? What do you mean, you didn't notice if he had a bleeding spear wound in his side?" would be beyond pointless, because it wasn't a vision meant for anyone but the receiver. She saw it. It helped her get better. Whether it was divinity or brain chemistry is coincidental if it provided some sort of meaning to the viewer, a point this homonculus seems to purposefully be ignoring.

Again, what an asshole. "Your Odin's throwing spear is 4.58" too long to be The Genuine Odin's Throwing Spear, so you're just making it up." Idiot.

Hee, Rashomon (not to mention every other freaking movie that has used the same device) would drive him into a frenzy. I wonder how he copes in real life.

Oh and it's just so cruel to let people believe in something that's not the truth according to Mr. Phaethon. Hasn't he fallen into the River Po yet? Oh wait, I think he did... and hit his head.

I can understand not wanting someone to be lead astry by something that's not true, but this sounds more like a personal account of an incident that helped someone get on a path of self-discovery.

He's not trying to create a Church of Odin, just sharing an experience he had, and if it helped him then I don't see the problem.

Minor clarification...
[info]moonjaguar
2004-09-01 06:55 am UTC (link)
estarcollector is the OP who posted about her Odin vision. mrphaethon is the one thumping his bible, asking for proof, saying her version of Odin isn't the right one because it doesn't match the one on some tapestry of all things and then posting about not wanting to "encourage [them] to believe something" he considers "ridiculously untrue" because he thinks it's "cruel" to encourage that.

I slogged partly through mrfay-a-thon's interminable bio in his userinfo and stopped when I got here.

"My job was at a home for dually-diagnosed autistic/mentally retarded individuals. I loved that job. I still talk to my former coworkers and the residents on the phone every week, and plan to work there during summers and vacations home. Even though it's illegal, I'll probably be putting some pictures of them up here."

Uh... he plans on putting up pictures of mentally handicapped residents on his LJ without anyone's permission even though he started the sentence with "Even though it's illegal" ??

I violated the troll law by publicly pointing out that little thing to him. Baaletion. Not that I knew of any site, mind you. All I knew was what was on his very publicly posted userinfo with which I was being "surprisingly personal".
