"This is so sick!"
Metaquotes brings the Pro-life/Pro-choice turmoil.

http://www.livejournal.com/community/metaquotes/1629683.html

It's all here as well as a call for the citizens of Metaquotes to solve world hunger next or, at least, figure out why Michael Jackson ain't in the loonie bin yet.

I think I like shinga and missjean and poorheather. Despite my fairly liberal outlook, I've verging on deep shame that 3/4th of the people I would normally agree with on political issues are spewing forth some of the most hate-filled, vitriolic inanity imaginable, coupled with a complete and abiding inadequacy of factual and correlative data (and comparative, dammit! because nothing happens in a void.) To say nothing of their apparently immeasurable contempt for anything even resembling a coherent logic or philosophy. Never before in my life have I spent so much time muttering "get the holy fuck off my side, you're making my side look stupid and brutish and hypocritical" as I have in the last few months. So it's nice to see someone, anyone, stop acting a narrow-minded retread asshole.

Oh, and ryca: I'm a Liberal (so liberal - I'm-not-comfortable-around-people-that-I-haven't-seen naked-because-I-went-to-UCSC liberal) and the current political climate out there really scares me, and I want to believe that there are intelligent conservatives out there, but it's hard to find them! So thank you for showing some intelligence and humor and just a tiny bit of open-mindedness...

...what a fucking wanker. You can't get much more condescending than that without descending into terminal irony. Makes me want to pretend to be conservative and go explain the facts of the matter in big, glittery words and concepts.

Sorry...it's been a hard couple months for the liberal in me to feel proud of my philosophical compatriots.

Heh. I'm not crazy about missjean myself, but I agreed with her on one thing. Apparently you can't be pro-choice anymore without calling fetuses "parasites". :P Stop being on my side, you're making my side look like a bunch of vicious, pedantic shits.

Well actually, unless I'm remembering my high-school bio class wrong, the definition used in that thread isn't technically of a parasite, because it says nothing about harming the host. That particular definition actually seemed to describe commensalism better.

Oh yes, what was that you said about 'pedantic?' :)

Exactly. It's the implicit smarter-and-holier-than-thou attitude that grates me...on both sides. Though more on the liberal side because, well, I'm pretty much liberal, and the behaviour of many of my fellow liberals actually scare me more than any hardline conservative ever did. And, more to the point, people are veering dangerously away from intellectual and value judgments to outright hate and invidious implications of actual evil. Not sure when holding a different position on an issue made your ideological opposition somehow morally subhuman.

Of course, I really don't comprehend some of the ideologies I'm hearing nowadays. Why in hell would someone hate gay people that much? I mean, seriously now....

I blame a lot of it on people only talking to people who agree with them, both online and off. My liberal aunt Ruth recently took her conservative walking buddy to a Kerry rally. Her friend was shocked to discover that there five thousand people in her town who had a different outlook on life than her. Aunt Ruth took a class over the summer to achieve her Master's Degree. Her teacher was an ultra-conservative, had his own radio show, and claimed fame because he was one of the protestors against removing the Ten Commandments from the Court House. After verifying that her grades would not reflect her political outlook, Aunt Ruth and her teacher proceeded to debate everything. Aunt Ruth later confessed that it was the first time she really had to defend her positions.

An anonymouse bitched at me about being pro-life a while back. It was very clear from the way s/h/it wrote her argument that s/h/it had never had the position s/h/it held challenged before. The debate presented was ill worded, ill concieved, and very wanky.

If no one ever disagrees with you, you don't have anyone to use to gauge if you position is batshit insane. I see this on all sides.

Ahem, I am done ranting answering your question now.

I think my favourite part is the arguments about how they 'have the right to their opinion'. I've seen it many times and it goes in circles. 'Yeah, well I still have the right to give my opinion!' 'But I have the right to give MY opinion on YOUR opinion!' 'Free speech violation!'

You know what? I'm pro-choice. I seriously am. I also have a degree in biology.

If I see another person try to sound smart by posting a laymen's dictionary definition of parasite and then saying that's what a fetus is, or saying that it's not human life, I'm going to snap. Using such arguments shows a clear misunderstanding of life science. >_<

Abortion is harsh. Sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes it's the best choice in a situation. It's still destroying human life in one of its early stages. And once other pro-choice people realize that and point their arguments towards the reasons why abortion is necessary and the best choice instead of trying to fudge around on what it is, then they'll gain more credibility instead of floundering around like they are now. And with the trends in lawmaking lately, the sooner you do this, the better, folks.

WORD. All kinds of word.

I went to a Catholic school, and we had more than one discussion on abortion, and they sometimes got fairly heated. Being pro-choice, I mostly just stayed out of it because really, what's the point? But there were a few times when I wanted to smack the other pro-choice girls for saying, "But it doesn't count as a life, it's not a living thing." Um, no. It does count as a living thing. Now use your l33t skillz to explain why abortion should still be legal.

Gah.

As a pro-lifer, I applaud you.

Likewise, I would like some pro-life people to stop being so damn radical and actually think about what is logical and possible rather than repeating the core argument. For instance, contraception use lowers the need for abortions. So does sex-ed. In a perfect world, no one would want an abortion for birth control and it would only be used in special circumstance cases.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]quinctia

Right. <3 promoting contraception.

My big thing is, though I doubt I'd ever get an abortion unless I would die otherwise, I know that the world has too many people in it and doesn't really need any more. Letting people "volunteer" to not reproduce is a better situation than any other idea you could think of. Anything else is fascist. So until we come up with fool proof semipermanent birth control, it's almost a necessary evil.

I think this gets my vote for "most creative use of immigration policy to keep gay people from embarrassing us at cocktail parties":

If Bush wins, I don't see why a lot of these angry gays can't just move up to Canada. Canada would like them. They're a pretty Liberal group of people and DO have gay marraige. Why stick in a country you don't even like?

But it's OK - she loves her gay friends. Be sure to write them in Canada!

Easy! Canada is cold. Very cold. I've been there.

Yes, I am saying this as I sit in Florida with the A/C off because we lost power in Hurricane Frances and our generator can only run so much. I still stand by it.

Don't forget she like Bush, so denying a portion of the population equal rights and leaving them with the choice between trying to survive the calculated destruction of their community or to up-root their lives and emigrate is A OK because *other than this* he's doing a fine old job.

Nevermind that her proposed 'solution' has a handy dandy UN convention concerning what this proposal actually is ~

Fred Phelps is a purveyor of hatred masquerading as a man of God.

Recognizing that the homoginization of a society, by removing unwanted peoples through a variety of measures including Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part is a crime against humanity was ratified by the United States in 1988. No, I am not accusing the OP, but recognizing what marginalizing a group's very existance and offering the 'solution' of emigrating is. I think it's hard for people who didn't grow up places where these things actually happened to realize that there was a whole sea of grey that watersheds into the black and white of actions.

...I really wanted to slap yonmei by the end. It's like she can't understand that there are more issues than gay marriage and yes, you can support Bush and still think he's utterly wrong on gay marriage. And several dozen other things. You just have to think that he is, sadly enough, the best candidate available.

Actually, I just read an article that may change my perception of it. But in short, it's a law very recently passed that forbids organizations from basically buying tv ads to advertise for or against political campaigns (prompted largely by the Swift Boat ads). However, looking more closely, it seems it might just ban corporations from buying ads, which I could argue as good or bad, really.

Unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to read the actual text of the law to understand it. Or at least get a migraine from it. Wah.

You know, I wonder if I could start a grassroots movement for the Plain English Amendment. Any law not clearly understandable as written by the average 12th grader may not be enforced. As a side benefit, it would put the IRS out of business. ^_^ (Yes, wishful thinking, I know)

I wouldn't worry too much about that in this case...the pro-choicers aren't looking much better here.

Yay for wanks where everyone comes off looking a bit loopy! I dislike the babies=parasites argument because it doesn't seem sound, but I also dislike the people who freak out when it's put forth. Refute it logically, don't just say it's disgusting because it gives you an emotional reaction...but then that's a problem in much political discourse, it seems.
