"Dr. Phil is the anti-christ."
Yes folks, you heard it here first. Over at YouThink.com, ssdss posts in the General Discussion forum, Dr. Phil says a 9 year old will be a serial killer??

I didnt see the show, but it has been talked about a lot. Apparently Dr. Phil had a 9 year old boy on his show. He told the kids parents that the kid had 9 of 14 traits that I serial killer has.
To me, this seems completely crazy. The kid is a trouble making 9 year old - there are many of them out there. Do you think that this constitutes child abuse or malpractice?
Did anyone see the show?
I am trying to find a link.

It all goes downhill from there. Back and forth arguing first between hottsmugirl and Millymeena, then between Morguebabe and ssdss, then it's an all in brawl.

The whole thread revolves around what Dr Phil said on his show about this kid. "There are 14 characteristics of a serial killer," Dr. Phil says. "Your son has nine of the 14. Jeffrey Dahmer had seven."

Also, there is a lot of Dr Phil name calling.

In conclusion Dr.Phil is a frikkin shytbrick, who is totally exploiting people with serious problems. I mean ricki lake, jerry springer these people are stupid enough/willing to go on but parents bringing a child on Dr.Phil=EVIL.

Dr. Phil makes me angry.

Dr. Phil is the anti-christ.

Dr. Phil is a stupid ass.

I agree. I hate that fat f*ck.

Does anyone else think he talks like Hank Hill?

I don't like Dr. Phil because he's an egomaniac, and a sh*t head.

Dr. Phil is just a f*cking idiot.

Dr. Phil is seriously f*cking retarded.

1) Dr. Phil is a freakin' idiot.

DR. Phil...upper middle class Jerry Springer

Oh yeah. Wank-tastic.

Oy.

I don't think Dr. Phil was attempting to harm the kid, he's pointing that he has some fucking serious issues that need to be addressed before he ends up doing something really awful.

I saw that section of his show while in psychology class. Now, I hate Dr. Phil. I think he gives bad parenting advice at times.

however, the 9 year old kid tortured small animals, liked to beat up hsi younger sister to see her bleed, and smeared feces on the wall. The very last is something I've never heard of a kid his age doing.

I think Dr. phil was pointing the obvious, "OMG! Your kid is fucked up!" which apparantly needed to be done.

/opinion.

Christ!

I didn't see the show but had his parents done *anything* about his behavior?

Basically just yelled at him. Clean the crap off his walls.

Dr. Phil went on about they never paid attention to him unless he did something bad, which was the whole "My kid's an attention whore!" negative feedback thing.

However, Dr. Phil said to strip his room until he had only his bed, which I think was a damn good idea.

I'm not a big Dr. Phil fan, but it sounds like he was on the mark with kid.

As I understand it, this sort of behavior tends to be indicative of severe sexual trauma.

So yeah.

Right...

Call me a future serial killer here, but judging on the kid's reported behavior, I rather doubt that the people around him think he's a wonderful child. If he acts anything like that at school, most of his teachers have already called him a serial killer in the making, so I doubt this will change their mind much.

Agreed. I think it would be hard for this kid to be stigamatised any more that he probably already is.

True, considering how he acts I wouldn't be surprised if such names either didn't bother him or he takes them as compliments.

[Yeah I knew kids who'd take something like 'you'll end up killing someone someday' as a compliment.]

And I suppose it's possible that this little episode could alter people's perceptions of the kid favourably, from "this kid is a little shit" to "this kid is ill and needs help."

Dr. Phil is the anti-christ.

Which is amusing, because I once came this close to making an icon that said "Jesus, He's like Dr. Phil, in a way".

Well, I thought it was funny...

I believe I showed many of those traits as well (not the ones the kid had, but you know) and I haven't killed anyone yet turned out ok.

To be fair I'm sure not everyone who exhibits *some* of these traits will be a serial killer, but this kid pratically had the whole list.

For me it's things like animal and people torturing, and setting fires, which causes the most worry.

The kid does sound like potential bad news -

But is Dr. Phil really a doctor, or one of those 'doctor of something totally irrelevant' doctors like Dr. Laura? I can never keep track with these people.

He is a licensed psychologist (or was at one point). However, he is the kind of licensed psychologist who left private practice when he realized he'd rather yell at people than actually listen to their problems.

Why would it be crazy to label a kid a psychotic at 9? There are plenty younger who are medicated for bipolar and ADD and God knows what else, this is nothing new.

And seem to me that people don't like Dr. Phil because he's blunt. He only has 15 minutes to tell people what's wrong with them and push them towards the help they need. If he did his job like a regular psychologist there'd really be no point to what he's doing.

That's the impression I get from a lot of his detractors, honestly. *shrug* And yeah, some people may not respond to that, but others do.

OT, but his sister lives across the street from my parents. o.o I didn't know that until Dad mentioned it the other day.

I already did, but the thing is that he doesn't
pretend that he's saving anyone or try to make anyone think that 15 minutes is going to fix them right up. He's not doing the job that a regular psychologist would do and he's never represented that he does. He may not always be right, but he does what he can and if people don't like that then they should stop going on his show and airing their dirty laundry and then guess what? He'd get cancelled. Problem is that everybody wants a quick fix and, right or wrong, that's what he's giving people.

From what I gather, they spend two or three hours getting a history before the show, spend the show to try and give a "wake up" bitchslap, and then set them up with a local psych doctor. I also understand that in some cases, he pays for a certain amount of subsequent treatment if the guest really needs it and couldn't pay for it otherwise.

So it's not an irresponsible set up, and it's about the best you can do on national TV.

And really, what makes it less okay than what happens on Riki Lake, say, where the guest gets 30 seconds at the end of the show, if that, to talk to a psychologist (or really, sit petulantly while a psychologist tells them they need help without really listening)and then gets sent on their merry way? At least Dr. Phil seems to be *trying* to help.
