My college paper printed an opinion article (unfortunately the archive site is giving errors so the link might not work, but here) about how oppressed the Young Republicans are on the generally liberal campus. The writer compared their 'persecution' to that experienced by gays.

Some wank results in the university's LJ community. Nothing too exciting, but the analogy of conservatives on campus to furries on the internet amuses me.

[NOTE: I'm not entirely sure that this goes here because I remember hearing a mention of a political-wank community but if one does exist I don't know where it is. If this is in the wrong place, I can move it where it should properly go, if necessary.]

Ah, the old "You're being intolerant of my intolerance so I WIN NO BACKSIES" ploy. Cute.

The furry bit is amusing, but the rest of the thread seems pretty civil. Of course, I'm biased. ;)

Huh? Since when did 'Republican' mean any sort of intolerant? Since when did everyone in the part share every one of G. W.'S pet beliefs?

I was told, by my professor, to fight the establishment, and I was very conformist for disagreeing with her. And my classmates smiled and nodded, having pleased their superior with how rebellious they were against the hierarchy. If only I agreed like everyone else, I could prove how much I thought for myself.

Right. Don't tell me that's not annoying as all hell.

On campus, if I said anything on campus about how I'm probably not voting Kerry, I'm a bible-thumping, gay hating, racist, anti-choicer.

If you tell me that, I think I would be within my rights to tell you to go fuck yourself. I tend to vote on economic issues unless a candidate really impresses me with their social policies. Kerry promising a gay union ghetto, and promising to keep the reproductive choice status quo G. W. left alone during his term just doesn't do it for me. Gay marriage would, but no one is promising that.

In no way does that make me "intolerant."

And most of the conservatives I know are economic conservatives, either because it would take promise of radical change to sway them because the rest tends to be idle promises or inadequate, or because they think Government has no place in making any social policy, including those on marriage. Those are some of the more rabidly pro gay rights friends I have.

But yeah, last I checked, conservatives weren't left for dead tied to fenceposts, so the conservative = gay thing is more than a bit tacky. But still, she's right-- people will be rabid jerks if you're anything but a Democrat.

Let's not get into that again, shall we? I wasn't actually referring to the article so much as some of the comments. Nowhere was I implying Teh Republican Parteh Ish Satan. Kthx.

You mean the way I replied with mild annoyance at being jumped on?

Yeah, yeah, I know, the intarweb is crawling with left-wing jackbooted thugs and therefore we must all be careful not to mention dumbasses and conservatives in the same breath.

I tend to think political whining is equally dumb no matter where it's coming from, myself.

http://george.loper.org/~george/archives/2003/Nov/992.html

"President Bush's signing of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act marks the first time in three decades that our nation has placed any restriction on an abortion procedure," said Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities. "This is a vital step in the right direction."

I tend to vote on economic issues unless a candidate really impresses me with their social policies.

http://www.godlessgeeks.com/Taxes.htm

In 2004, take-home pay as a share of the economy dropped to its lowest level since 1929, when the government started keeping records. All of this would make the drive for a wage tax laughable, if only it were a joke. And yet, when he says "ownership society," a wage tax is exactly what Mr. Bush is driving at.

Is Kerry actually for partial birth abortion unconditionally? Nope.

"John Kerry voted to restrict late-term abortions but only where there was a clear exception for life or health of women," Kerry spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said in a statement Tuesday. "When John Kerry is president, he will appoint judges that are committed to upholding the Constitution, not pursuing an ideological agenda."

Found here

That's still a restriction. Notice there are shades of grey, even among pro-choicers, that leave them believing different things. Very few politicians advocate no restriction on abortion whatsoever, including Kerry.

One does not seem substantially better than the other to me. If abortion is a bigger issue for you, it's more than fine to vote for him because of that.

I also haven't seen Bush promise to overturn Roe vs. Wade, or Kerry do anything but promise to elect Supreme Court Judges that would uphold it. Seeing as I am pro-choice, but think Roe vs. Wade is an unstable pile of crap (I want a Privacy Amendment, and see Roe vs Wade as a very shaky interpretation of the law that could easily be overturned, and an obstacle to a more stable solution), I have very mixed feelings on that anyway.

Pointing out the economy isn't that great doesn't prove your point if the root cause of the problem happened in the Clinton administration. If you recall, the economy started to tank before Bush went into office. It happened shortly after the threat of Microsoft splitting made tech stocks a risky business. Tech bubble go boom.

How is this Bush's fault? How will Kerry's policy be better for the economy?

I'm not looking for evidence Bush is bad, since it is abundant. I'm looking for evidence Kerry is better. He could be. It's just he hasn't locked my vote. If he has yours, cool.

Also, the culture on some campuses is very different-- I'd guess my college was about 70% libertarian/republican, as far as the student body went, profs were more liberal. No one dared suppress the conservatives there, trust me.

Seeing as how there are about 40 different F_W comms now for all the different breeds of wank, I couldn't give less of a shit that you posted it here. I actually wish they'd stop proliferating like rabbits at some point. (...the comms, not the neo-conservative persecution-complex people, I wouldn't want them to think I was oppressing them)

All-in-all, pretty interesting, even if the catfight itself half-way through the thread was boring. :P *is into political crap this year, just cause*

Yesterday I was put off joining the UK New Communist Party because their newspaper is badly punctuated.

*shame*

I let my grammatical nazism win out over my political views. I'm not quite sure what that makes me, other than embarrassed for the Communist Party.

Hey, just a random shout-out, I just graduated from the UW, and winged my way down to sunny California for graduate school.

But! Hey! UW!
(And the Young Republicans on campus can just STFU. When people start banning them from marriage and rounding them up on boxcars and MAYBE AREN'T THE POLITICAL MAJORITY in the presidency and house/senate they can bitch about being sent to the death campus.)

That's what I was thinking . . . awful lot of bitching and "omg persecution!!1!!" for folks who hold almost all the cards at the moment.

For now. Hey, maybe they're screaming so loud 'cause they know their days are numbered? *shrug*
