Organ donation wank!
So over on WTF-Inc, a spin off of the Train-wreck Support comm, someone posts a story about a guy who's organs were donated even though they believe he wasn't braindead.

Things are pretty normal till Hockeybrat shows up and points out that one shouldn't be an organ donor because apparently things like this happen all the time.

Of course other people disagree.

The whole thing is here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/wtf_inc/234007.html

[I posted but I don't think it's technically I-Wank material.]

Personally, I hope that whoever got his organs don't find out that he's the one that supplied 'em. Ugh. As if getting transplants aren't bad enough as is (isn't there a whole psychological survivor's guilt complex about it?), finding out that the guy you got them from might not have been dead is really, really horrible.

Though that's an idiotic thing to say, I'm also ehhh... not all that happy when people say "But what if it was your family/friend/spouse?!" - as if that is a completely different situation, because your family's lives are important and everyone else's are not. "Oh, I was going to say fuck those people who need new livers, but if it's Uncle Frank, then that's DIFFERENT." I just... no.

On the entertaining side, I love how Miss Compressionface implies that this happens every single day. Yyyy...yeah. Okay. It happens "more and more," "all the time." Rrrrright.

I know that I live in terror of falling asleep and waking to find that a doctor has taken my organs. [They can have the pancreas though, it doesn't work anyway.]

But look on the bright side - you lose a lung and both your kidneys, but you gain a bathtub full of ice! D'you know how much alcohol can be kept cold by a bathtub full of ice?! Black-market organ harvester party, woo!

Indeed, it's far less accurrate than they continue to advertise.

... Yet I can't seem to stop watching it. At first it was just SVU (BELZER!), then I discovered Sam Waterson, and now I'm doomed to watching it forever. With 12+ years of reruns, I'm sure I'll never be able to have a life ever again.

Well, but isn't that the point they're trying to make? 'Your family is important, and therefore so are other people's, try to empathize'? That's how I always took it, at least.

As for Miss Compressionface (nice name, by the way), I completely agree with her. After all, it does happen more and more. It does! I have no evidence to back it up aside from this single article we've all just read, but it happens all the time. Really!

I never assume that that's what people mean when they whip out the "what if it were you" line. I always assume it means "you're more important than other people." Because they've already decided that strangers' lives aren't important.

That, and they have programs in which you can donate blood specifically for yourself and your family - I'm probably combining the two in my mind into this big misanthropic "you're all self-centered bastards" gripe. ;)

Huh. I'll have to pay more attention to what I say, then, because I've used similar lines for the purpose of trying to get the person to empathize. It's rather... unsettling, to find out that people may have taken it a completely different way.

And I can *sort of* understand why people would donate blood just for them and their family - as I understand it, own/family blood is usually better for a patient - but yeah, that's really sad. I hadn't heard of those programs before. Yeesh, it really makes me wish I could donate blood to the general cause - I have low blood pressure, though, and they never let me donate.

When you get down to it I think most people are gonna value the lives of those they love over the lives of people they barely know.

The things is, many people do think that way. Look at Nancy Regan - she was all for the party line that stem cell research was bad, until it was her husband who was suffering.

Or for that matter, there are women who have abortions, and then turn around and picket family planning clinics. Their problem was real and required a drastic solution, but all those other women? Baby-killing hos.

I think the point someone was trying to make is "it's easy to think you'd blow something like this off when it's theoretical, but consider how you'd feel if the victim was someone in whom you're emotionally vested - that's how the people involved feel."

I know people do think that way; I just don't think it's a good thing.

I don't assume that they think it's theoretical - if they're so stupid as to make a decision like that without considering how the families of the people involved think, I... wow. I can't believe that. Though I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how stupid and ignorant people can be. Bleh.

I know someone who says she won't donate her organs because the thought 'creeps her out'. But she says that she might feel differently if something happened to a friend or family member of hers.

That just bothers me on so many levels. In retrospect, I should've asked her if she'd refuse to accept a donated organ if it meant her life or death...

Rardin was brought to Montrose Memorial on September 26 and declared brain dead, Young said. He was then taken by helicopter to St. Mary's, where he was again declared brain dead and surgeons removed his organs.
Dude, how many times do they have to declare you're brain dead before you're really declared dead, anyway? (Yeah, yeah, I know. Tests. And stuff.)

What I really love is the assumption that they wouldn't, say, take you off life support unless they wanted your organs. :p

Oh please. I have a hard time believing that story. Maybe the doctors did make a mistake but I really really doubt that they deliberately removed a person's organs when there was any possibility of recovering. Maybe that's because a friend of mine who was killed was left on life support for a few days after doctors declared her brain-dead while they waited for the final gag reflexes to stop before harvesting her organs.*

Now the bit about removing the organ donor thing from your driver's license. Isn't that a bit pointless? No matter what you state doctors are still required to get your families permission before they can do anything to harvest your organs. Maybe some-one who works in an ER or something can tell, but do they even bother thinking about organ donations before it looks like they've lost the patients who'll be doing the donating?

Hell, in Belgium, you're technically an organ donor unless you explicitely state otherwise, and they still usually ask the family. But OMG clearly Belgian doctors are going around harvesting organs like Grim Reapers on speed JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN!

So right has the right of way even if it's the smaller road but not if it's signed otherwise but if it's a roundabout the inside has right of way unless it's the outside or maybe the rightmost intersection unless...

My sweetie works ICU and often babysits people who have no chance of recovering and are going to die. If there's any chance that they guy was going to recover they'd, you know, treat him. The guy shot himself in the head and got pronounced twice. He was dead.

I think the coroner was just trying to push to have some of the hospital's standards changed. There's no proof that he was still alive, the coroner was just pushing for more proof that he was dead. It's too bad he used such an inflamatory way to protest.
